The remedy for infected chronic wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers is more complicated particularly in the case of patients with an inefficient immune system. Recently, applications of micro- and nanoformulations of biomaterials have demonstrated improved therapeutic abilities for wound dressings. In this way, carboxymethyl, dialdehyde, and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl-oxidized celluloses are common biomaterials having outstanding physicochemical and therapeutic properties compared to unmodified cellulose. KGaA, Weinheim.Plasma exchange is a therapeutic option in refractory Kawasaki disease (KD). However, the effects of other immunosuppressive treatments on plasma exchange therapy have not been studied. We investigated the effect of infliximab on plasma exchange in KD as well as on the outcome in patients with KD. We studied 16 patients with intravenous immunoglobulin-resistant KD who finally underwent plasma exchange. The patients were divided into two groups patients who received infliximab before plasma exchange (infliximab group) and patients who did not (non-infliximab group). The infliximab group showed a lesser median number of required total plasma exchange sessions (P = .002) and higher change and reduction rates in C-reactive protein before and after the first plasma exchange (both P = .027) than that of the non-infliximab group. Infliximab administered before plasma exchange reduced the number of total plasma exchange sessions and improved the plasma exchange efficacy. © 2020 International Society for Apheresis, Japanese Society for Apheresis, and Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy.INTRODUCTION Despite the advent of HIV cure-related clinical trials (HCRCT) for people living with HIV (PLWH), the risks and uncertainty involved raise ethical issues. Although research has provided insights into the levers and barriers to PLWH and physicians' participation in these trials, no information exists about stakeholders' preferences for HCRCT attributes, about the different ways PLWH and physicians value future HCRCT, or about how personal characteristics affect these preferences. METHODS Between October 2016 and March 2017, a discrete choice experiment was conducted among 195 virally controlled PLWH and 160 physicians from 24 French HIV centres. Profiles within each group, based on individual characteristics, were obtained using hierarchical clustering. Trade-offs between five HCRCT attributes (triaing HCRCT. This study aimed to clarify the risk factors, including the level of daily life independence, and develop an assessment score for DVT in older patients. METHODS We recruited 252 patients aged ≧65 years with suspected deep vein thrombosis. Risk factors for deep vein thrombosis, cognitive impairment, laboratory data and level of daily life independence were analyzed to calculate the odds ratios for the onset of DVT with logistic regressions. The Himi score was generated with factors significantly related to DVT by adjusting the respective odds ratios. The discrimination accuracy of the Himi score associated with the onset of DVT was compared with those of conventional scores (Wells score, Padua score) based on the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. RESULTS Low levels of daily life independence, D-dimer level >3.0 μg/mL, anticoagulant use, cancer and immobilization or symptoms of the lower limbs were associated with the onset of DVT. The discrimination accuracy of Himi scores composed of these related factors was significantly higher than those of the Wells and Padua scores. CONCLUSIONS Achieving a better performance than did the Wells and Padua scores, the Himi score could be used to assess the risk of DVT in frail older adults. IAPP is a calcitonin family peptide hormone that is cosecreted with insulin, and largely responsible for hunger satiation and metabolic homeostasis. Amyloid plaques containing mixtures of mature IAPP and misprocessed proIAPP deposit on, and destroy pancreatic β-cell membranes, and they are recognized as a clinical hallmark of type 2 diabetes mellitus. In order to better understand the interaction with cellular membranes, we solved the solution NMR structure of proIAPP bound to dodecylphosphocholine micelles at pH 4.5. We show that proIAPP is a dynamic molecule with four α-helices. The first two helices are contained within the mature IAPP sequence, while the second two helices are part of the C-terminal prohormone segment (Cpro). We mapped the membrane topology of the amphipathic helices by paramagnetic relaxation enhancement, and we used CD and diffusion-ordered spectroscopy to identify environmental factors that impact proIAPP membrane affinity.
