In this study, we conducted field experiments to investigate the practical effects of tilling the soil down to a depth of 40 cm (40dp) in combination with dazomet (D) soil fumigation and/or the application of a bio-organic fertilizer (B) on chrysanthemum growth, with a focus on the potential mechanisms underlying the responses of the soil microbiome. The growth indices of chrysanthemum were significantly (p less then .05) increased in the DB + 40dp treatment compared to that in other treatments. The weighted and unweighted UniFrac distances in the principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) revealed that soil bacterial and fungal community compositions were separated according to the treatments. The abundance of genera potentially expressing growth promotion, such as Pseudomonas and Bacillus, was increased in the DB + 40dp treatment. In addition, the combined DB + 40dp treatment enhanced the activities of catalase, urease, sucrase, and β-d-glucosidase, and significantly increased the levels of available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the soil. The redundancy analysis (RDA) implied that the composition of the microbiome was correlated to soil enzymatic activities and soil potassium availability in the rhizosphere soil of chrysanthemum plants. Our findings suggest that the DB + 40dp treatment is a better strategy for improving chrysanthemum growth and regulating the rhizosphere microbiome in monoculture soils than the methods presently employed by commercial chrysanthemum producers. © 2020 The Authors. Stimuli from the Radboud Faces Database were used to compare recognition of four negative emotion expressions by older adults with PD (n = 16) and matched controls (n = 17). Participants were tasked with categorizing emotional expressions from upright and inverted whole faces and facial composites; it is difficult to derive configural information from these two types of stimuli so featural processing should play a larger than usual role in accurate recognition of emotional expressions. We found that the PD group were impaired relative to controls in recognizing anger, disgust and fearful expressions in upright faces. Then, consistent with a configural processing deficit, participants with PD showed no composite effect when attempting to identify facial expressions of anger, disgust and fear. A face inversion effect, however, was observed in the performance of all participants in both the whole faces and facial composites tasks. These findings can be explained in terms of a configural processing deficit if it is assumed that the disruption caused by facial composites was specific to configural processing, whereas inversion reduced performance by making it difficult to derive both featural and configural information from faces. © 2020 The British Psychological Society.Increases in reproductive hormones like estrogen, play an important role in the remarkable increases in plasma volume observed in pregnancy. Accurate estimates of plasma volume expansion during pregnancy depend on correctly timing and measuring plasma volume in nonpregnant women. However, to date, there is no consensus on the pattern of plasma volume across the menstrual cycle. We prospectively measured plasma volume in 45 women across a single menstrual cycle. A urine-based fertility monitor was used to time three clinic visits to distinct points in the menstrual cycle the early follicular phase (~day 2), periovulation (~day 12), and the mid-point of the luteal phase (~day 21)-based on a 28-day cycle length. Healthy women aged 18-41 years with regular menstrual cycles and a healthy body weight were enrolled in the study. At each visit, blood samples were collected before and after injection of 0.25 mg/kg body weight of indocyanine green dye (ICG). Pre- and post-ICG injection plasma samples were used to measure plasma volume. Preinjection samples were used to measure ovarian hormones and plasma osmolality. Mean plasma volume was highest during the early follicular phase (2,276 ± 478 ml); it declined to 2,232 ± 509 ml by the late follicular phase and to 2,228 ± 502 ml by the midluteal phase. This study found that overall variations in plasma volume are small across the menstrual cycle. Therefore, in clinical practice and research, the menstrual cycle phase may not be an important consideration when evaluating plasma volume among women of reproductive age. © 2020 The Authors.
