The Best Home Espresso Machine
Superautomatic espresso machines are an excellent alternative for those who don't have barista experience but still desire to enjoy top-quality coffee at home. These machines have automatic features and are digitally convenient. They heat quickly, and they don't require much counter space.
The model is programmable for volumetric dosing as well as an adjustable pre-infusion. It includes a steaming wand and a commercial-grade grouphead.
1. Breville Bambino Plus
The Bambino Plus, despite its cute name is an actual machine. It's packed with features that make it a great pick for anyone looking to step up from the standard Breville espressi machines or those who want an option that is more automated than manual.
It's an PID controller that handles the temperature and pressure control, meaning it's ready to make espresso the moment you push the button. It also makes use of the technology known as Thermo Jet which allows it to warm up in just 3 seconds, so you can make your espresso quicker than other espresso machines at home (which require between 10 and 30 minutes to warm up).
The machine was built with simplicity in mind. There is only one button to manage everything. You can choose between one shot or a double shot and set the brewing time, something that you cannot do with other espresso machines at this price. The polished stainless steel finish gives it a luxurious appearance, and its small size makes it ideal for anyone with limited countertop space or a cramped kitchen.
The Bambino Plus also comes with all the equipment you require to begin brewing, including the 54mm tamper from a steel and a dose trimmer tool. It's the only one in this category that can do this, and it shows that Breville is dedicated to making their products as reliable as is possible. It will remind you to descal and clean it, so that it runs smoothly.
If you're new to espresso and want to learn more, the Bambino Plus is arguably the best choice for an affordable home espresso machine. It's user-friendly and has a quick heat-up time, and does a good job of automatically blending milk for you. However, its high cost could make it out of reach for some people.
2. De'Longhi Stilosa
The De'Longhi Stilosa is an affordable and well-rounded manual espresso machine that is suitable for coffee novices and coffee enthusiasts alike. It's easy to use and looks great on the counter and produces excellent cappuccinos, espresso and lattes. It does have some drawbacks that should be taken into consideration.
In our brewing metrics The Stilosa scored average to below-average for its quality of brewing and its control. This was due to the small size of the filter baskets, and the lack of temperature control. Both of these factors restrict your ability to adjust the extraction. We liked the fact that this unit is quick to heat up and that the spout could be adjusted to an ideal height.
It also includes a convenient water tank that can hold up 34 ounces. It also includes a built-in level indicator to tell you when it's time to refill. It's removable and can be used in the event that you want to clean the tank, or if you don't have a sink in the vicinity. Another feature that's new to this model is a movable drip tray that allows you to hold taller cups under the spout.
In our steaming metrics, the Stilosa also came up short. This was largely because of its limited control over the steam temperature as well as the absence of a pre-infusion option that are standard features on much more expensive machines. Despite these flaws we were pleased with the fact that it doesn't require regular maintenance and is backed by a one-year warranty. The De'Longhi Stilosa is a great addition to a home coffee bar. It's easier to use than other models we've tried and can save money on cafe drinks.
3. Breville Barista Express Impress
The Breville Express Impress Barista (that's quite a mouthful, don't you agree?) is espresso maker designed for espresso-curious beginners. This single boiler, pump-driven machine hopes to make it easy for anyone to make an espresso shot that is decent without sacrificing flavor or brewing consistency.
First of all it takes the guesswork out of changing the grinder, tamper, and brew group settings using its easy-to-use controls. You can select between double or single shots, as well as your preferred temperature. The thermocoil heater in the machine guarantees that your espresso will be ready to go within 30 seconds. This is much quicker than the 30 minutes that most single boiler machines need to get to temperature.
Another key feature is the "impressive" dosing and tamping system that works with the tamper to automatically adjust the correct amount of ground coffee per shot. The system makes use of sensors to measure the depth of the basket, and then alters how much ground coffee is dispensed. If you're feeling a little less confident in your ability to control manually the grind size, water temperature, and dosing, the machine offers various presets that can help.
The Barista Express Impress also comes with the infamous single hole steam wand, that can create stunning latte art. This is the same wand is found in Breville's top-of-the-line Barista Express machines, and it's a great tool.
I'm not one who advocates for coffee shortcuts, fully automated machines, or even pods, but the Impress does what it sets out to do without being too daunting or removing the pleasure of making a good shot of espresso. I'm pleased with it and give it a thumbs up!
4. Diletta Mio
The Diletta Mio is a great choice for home baristas who prioritize quality, design and convenience. Its sleek and modern design, high-end components and constant performance make it a conversation piece in your coffee bar. It's also a good option for those who are just beginning to understand the basics of steaming and espresso without getting overwhelmed by the programming and complexity.
One of the most impressive aspects of this machine is its PID-controlled brew boiler that ensures rapid warm-up time and a steady temperature. This is crucial, particularly for espresso because even minor changes in water temperature can alter the taste and quality of the espresso.
Another standout feature is the Diletta's separate thermoblock for steaming, which allows you to prepare espresso and steam milk at the same time. This can be a significant time-saver and assists in ensuring that your milk is of the proper texture for your drinks. It also conserves energy by only consuming power when it's needed.
This machine has an indicator of pressure on the group head. It's a nice touch that lets you monitor the pressure of your extraction in real time. You can also adjust the OPV for a finer extraction. This is a feature normally reserved for machines that cost more.
Other notable features of the Diletta include its easy-to-clean, side-accessible water tank, as well as its energy-saving mode, which can be set in increments of 10 minutes that can last up to two hours. The insulated wrap minimizes heat loss, and its dual temperature control system helps reduce static electricity. This means less waste and lower cost.
However, some customers have reported issues with the longevity of this machine and long repair times. Some have also had poor customer service from Diletta and have had trouble in resolving warranty issues.
5. Jura E8
This top-quality super-automatic espresso machine is equipped with a wide array of pre-programmed specialty drinks at the touch of one button. It also makes ristrettos, cappuccinos, macchiatos flat whites, and teas and plain coffee, hot chocolate and plain espresso. Its modern brewing technology and elegant color display are only some of the features that set this machine apart from other machines.
The E8 makes use of the Aroma G3 grinder to grind beans quickly and precisely. It comes with eight grind settings which may seem like a lot if contrasted with other super automatics that only have 3 or 4. The higher setting allows you to control the size and consistency of your cup, which is vital to a perfect cup.
In addition to the powerful burr grinder, the Jura E8 has an intelligent pre-infusion system and a pulse extraction process, both responsible for creating a high-quality cup of espresso each time. The PEP process utilizes short bursts of water to force the coffee through the grinder, allowing full flavor extraction. The resulting cup is richer, fuller, and more flavorful than your typical instant coffee that comes from a Keurig.
The Jura E8 is designed to create a range of drinks, and it does so extremely well. It produces a strong smooth cappuccino as well as an excellent espresso. The only drawback is that it's unable to make the latte. This requires a high pressure steam boiler to make a thick, foamy bubble.
Like many super automated machines that are available, this one requires some attention, but is fairly easy to keep clean. It will automatically self-clean and descale after each use, and it can be programmed to perform an additional cleaning once or twice per year. It will remind you to change the filter after every 80 drinks.
