Parkinson's disease (PD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor symptoms such as tremor, slowness of movement, rigidity, and postural instability, as well as non-motor features like sleep disturbances, loss of ability to smell, depression, constipation, and pain. Motor symptoms are caused by depletion of dopamine in the striatum due to the progressive loss of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. Approximately 10% of PD cases are familial arising from genetic mutations in α-synuclein, LRRK2, DJ-1, PINK1, parkin, and several other proteins. The majority of PD cases are, however, idiopathic, i.e., having no clear etiology. PD is characterized by progressive accumulation of insoluble inclusions, known as Lewy bodies, mostly composed of α-synuclein and membrane components. The cause of PD is currently attributed to cellular proteostasis deregulation and mitochondrial dysfunction, which are likely interdependent. In addition, neuroinflammation is present in brains of PD patients, but whether it is the cause or consequence of neurodegeneration remains to be studied. Rodents do not develop PD or PD-like motor symptoms spontaneously; however, neurotoxins, genetic mutations, viral vector-mediated transgene expression and, recently, injections of misfolded α-synuclein have been successfully utilized to model certain aspects of the disease. Here, we critically review the advantages and drawbacks of rodent PD models and discuss approaches to advance pre-clinical PD research towards successful disease-modifying therapy. © 2020 The Authors. As the fastest developing photovoltaic device, perovskite solar cells have achieved an extraordinary power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.3% under AM 1.5 illumination. However, few studies have been devoted to perovskite solar cells harvesting artificial light, owing to the great challenge in the simultaneous manipulation of bandgap-adjustable perovskite materials, corresponding matched energy band structure of carrier transport materials, and interfacial defects. Herein, through systematic morphology, composition, and energy band engineering, high-quality Cs0.05 MA0.95 PbBrx I3- x perovskite as the light absorber and Nby Ti1- y O2 (NbTiO2 ) as the electron transport material with an ideal energy band alignment are obtained simultaneously. The theoretical-limit-approaching record PCEs of 36.3% (average 34.0 ± 1.2%) under light-emitting diode (LED, warm white) and 33.2% under fluorescent lamp (cold white) are achieved simultaneously, as well as a PCE of 19.5% (average 18.9 ± 0.3%) under solar illumination. An integrated energy conversion and storage system based on an artificial light response solar cell and sodium-ion battery is established for diverse practical applications, including a portable calculator, quartz clock, and even environmental monitoring equipment. Over a week of stable operation shows its great practical potential and provides a new avenue to promote the commercialization of perovskite photovoltaic devices via integration with ingenious electronic devices. © 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.Despite the availability of a numerous antihypertensive agents, hypertension treatment and control rates remain low in many countries. The role of the sympathetic nervous system has long been recognized, but recent sham control renal denervation studies demonstrated conflicting results. In this reviewe paper, the authors performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine outcomes of sham-controlled studies utilizing new technologies and procedures. Six published randomized, sham-controlled studies were included in this meta-analysis. Of those, three trials used the first-generation radiofrequency renal denervation device and technique and the other three used second-generation devices and techniques. In total, 981 patients with hypertension were randomized in all 6 trials to undergo renal denervation (n = 585) or sham procedure (n = 396). Overall, renal denervation resulted in a decrease of 24-hours systolic ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) by 3.62 mm Hg (95% CI -5.28--1.96; I2 = 0%), compared to sham procedure (GRADE low). Renal denervation also reduced daytime systolic ABP by 5.51 mm Hg (95% CI -7.79--3.23; I2 = 0%), compared to sham procedure but not nighttime systolic ABP. Office systolic blood pressure was reduced by 5.47 mm Hg (95% CI -8.10--2.84; I2 = 0%), compared to sham control. Further analysis demonstrated that second-generation devices were effective in reducing blood pressure, whereas the first-generation devices were not. These results indicate that effective renal denervation can result in significant and clinically meaningful blood pressure reduction. The second-generation devices provide better renal nerve ablation. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.This study aims to determine whether dietary sodium restriction counseling decreases nocturnal voiding frequency in cardiology patients with concomitant nocturia. Infigratinib Patients who had established care at a cardiology clinic from 2015 to 2018 reporting ≥1 average nocturnal void(s) underwent a comprehensive sodium intake interview by their cardiologist, who provided them with individualized strategies for dietary sodium reduction and assessed adherence at follow-up. Average nocturnal voiding frequency and dietary adherence were documented in the medical record. A nocturia database was compiled for retrospective analysis. A total of 74 patients were included. Patients considered to be adherent with dietary sodium restriction at follow-up (n = 56) demonstrated a decrease in median nocturia frequency (2.5 [2.3-3.0] vs 1.0 [1.0-2.0] voids, P less then .001). Among nonadherent patients (n = 18), median nocturia frequency did not significantly change from baseline to follow-up (2.0 [1.5-3.8] vs 2.0 [1.5-4.8] voids, P = .423). Median changes were significantly different between the adherent and nonadherent groups (P less then .001). Examination of second follow-up available from 37 patients showed a continued effect. In conclusion, adherence with dietary sodium counseling appears to improve nocturia. Accordingly, dietary modification may represent an important adjunct therapy to lifestyle and pharmacologic interventions for decreasing nocturia frequency. Reduction in nocturnal voiding frequency may also reflect an additional benefit of dietary sodium restriction in accordance with best practice standards for cardiovascular disease. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
