This study evaluated the potential of a panel of 20 protein biomarkers, quantified by Reverse Phase Protein Array (RPPA), to explain and predict two important meat quality traits, these being beef tenderness assessed by Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF) and the intramuscular fat (IMF) content (also termed marbling), in a large database of 188 Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Maine-Anjou cows. Thus, the main objective was to move forward in the progression of biomarker-discovery for beef qualities by evaluating, at the same time for the two quality traits, a list of candidate proteins so far identified by proteomics and belonging to five interconnected biological pathways (i) energy metabolic enzymes, (ii) heat shock proteins (HSPs), (iii) oxidative stress, (iv) structural proteins and (v) cell death and protein binding. Therefore, three statistical approaches were applied, these being Pearson correlations, unsupervised learning for the clustering of WBSF and IMF into quality classes, and Partial Least Sth beef tenderness and marbling in PDO Maine-Anjou cows.The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of cow and human milk derived exosomes (MDEs) on colitis. We used gavage administration of fluorescent labeled MDEs to track their localization patterns in vivo and studied their therapeutic effect on colitis in a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis model. MDEs attenuated the severity of colitis induced by DSS and statistically reduced the histopathological scoring grade and shortening of the colon. Likewise, treatment with MDEs reduced the expression of interleukin 6 and tumor necrosis factor-α. Moreover, miRNAs highly expressed in milk, such as miRNA-320, 375, and Let-7, were found to be more abundant in the colon of MDE-treated mice compared with untreated mice; contrastingly, the expression of their target genes, mainly DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) and DNMT3 were downregulated. Furthermore, the level of TGF-β was upregulated in the colon of MDE-treated mice. We demonstrated that MDEs have a therapeutic and anti-inflammatory effect on colitis, involving several complementary pathways in its mechanism of action. The therapeutic effects of MDEs might have implications for the possible addition of MDEs as a nutrient in enteral nutrition formulas for patients with inflammatory bowel disease.Benefit finding has been defined as positive life changes that result from a stressful event, such as the diagnosis of chronic illness. The present study aimed to develop a benefit finding questionnaire (BFQ) and examine its psychometric property among people with chronic mental illness in Japan. This study adopted a mixed method composed of three phases, including Phase 1 To draft the item pool and design the BFQ based on literature review and discussion among the authors, Phase 2 To revise and refine the drafted items through feedback from focus group interviews and further consideration, and Phase 3 To examine the psychometric properties of the BFQ following the questionnaire survey for people with chronic mental illness and validation of the questionnaire. In Phase 3, a cross-sectional, self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted for mental health service users. Among the 373 eligible participants, we used data from 265 respondents for the analyses (valid response rate = 71.0%). About 65% were male, and the average age was 45.3 years (SD = 12.9). Around 70% were diagnosed with schizophrenia. Factorial, concurrent, and divergent validities, as well as reliability were explored. The 21-item BFQ demonstrated good factorial validity, concurrent and divergent validities, and sufficient internal consistency reliability among people with chronic mental illness. It appears to be a useful scale to assess experience of benefit finding among people with chronic mental illness. Further large-scale research will ensure verification of the scale among people with other illnesses or difficulties.Unplanned hospital readmissions represent a significant health care value problem with high costs and poor quality of care. A significant percentage of readmissions could be prevented if clinical inpatient teams were better able to predict which patients were at higher risk for readmission. Many of the current clinical decision support models that predict readmissions are not configured to integrate closely with the electronic health record or alert providers in real-time prior to discharge about a patient's risk for readmission. However, its accurate measurement at high spatial density with a conventional ruler is time-consuming and costly. We estimated grass height with high accuracy and speed using the structure from motion (SfM) and portable light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems. The shapes of leaf tip surface and ground in grassland were determined by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-SfM, pole camera-SfM, and hand-held LiDAR, before and after grass harvesting. Grass height was most accurately estimated using the difference between the maximum value of the point cloud before harvesting, and the minimum value of the point cloud after harvesting, when converting from the point cloud to digital surface model (DSM). We confirmed that the grass height estimation accuracy was the highest in DSM, with a resolution of 50-100 mm for SfM and 20 mm for LiDAR, when the grass width was 10 mm. We also found that the error of the estimated value by LiDAR was about half of that by SfM. As a result, we evaluated the influence of the data conversion method (from point cloud to DSM), and the measurement method on the accuracy of grass height measurement, using SfM and LiDAR.
