Meta-analyses assessing the efficacy of expressive writing (EW) interventions have produced mixed results. The current study aimed to assess the efficacy of an EW intervention in the reduction of anxiety symptoms in first-year college students. In an effort to understand more about moderating variables that influence EW outcomes, the current study also assessed the role of linguistic features in symptom reduction.

Ninety participants were assigned to complete either an EW intervention or a non-emotional writing intervention. Participants completed 3 consecutive days of writing and two follow-up visits. Anxiety was measured at each study visit with the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and linguistic features were assessed with the LIWC software program.

Results indicated that all participants demonstrated significant decreases in anxiety over time. Participants in the EW group who demonstrated the greatest decreases in anxiety utilized more first-person singular pronouns and fewer affect words.

Results are explained in the context of two prominent theories regarding the therapeutic mechanisms of EW cognitive processing theory and exposure theory. Exposure theory received more support than cognitive processing theory.

The genus Ocotea exhibits a variety of pharmacological, antimicrobial and antioxidant effects. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antioxidant potential and antimicrobial properties of the ethyl acetate fraction of Ocotea paranaensis leaves. Isolation and identification of the phenolic compounds from the fraction was also carried out. The isolated compounds were characterized by one and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance analysis and identified as (-) epicatechin (1), quercetin (2), kaempferol (3) and hyperin (4). The ethyl acetate fraction of Ocotea paranaensis leaves demonstrated considerable antioxidant potential. The observed minimum inhibitory concentration of 500 µg/mL was classified as a moderate antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Findings from this study demonstrate the utility of this plant as a potential source of antioxidant and antimicrobial agents.Introduction Infected ureteral stones are a urologic emergency and require urgent decompression. We set out to determine whether serum procalcitonin (PCT) could aid in the diagnosis of infected ureteral stones. Methods All consecutive patients presenting to the emergency room from November 9, 2016, to November 10, 2018, with an obstructing ureteral stone were included. All patients had complete blood count, urinalysis (UA), PCT, and urine culture (UCx). Subgroup analysis was performed in a "clinically equivocal" cohort of afebrile patients defined as a leukocytosis >104/μL and UA with less then 50 white blood cells (WBCs) per high powered field (hpf). Patients with positive and negative UCx were compared. Results A total of 231 patients were included, of whom 56 had a positive UCx. Of all covariates, UA WBCs with a cutoff of 9 per hpf performed best at predicting positive UCx with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.87. PCT did not perform as well with an ideal cutoff of 0.08 ng/mL, having an AUC of 0.77, sensitivity 70.6%, specificity 73.9%, positive predictive value (PPV) 34.3%, and negative predictive value (NPV) 92.9%. When looking at the clinically equivocal cohort, UA WBCs with a cutoff of 6 per hpf appeared to perform best at predicting a positive UCx with an AUC of 0.72. PCT was less predictive in this cohort with an ideal cutoff of 0.3 ng/mL, having an AUC of 0.32, sensitivity 47.1%, specificity 85.2%, PPV 38.1%, and NPV 89.3%. Conclusion PCT does not appear to be a superior marker for diagnosing urinary tract infection in the setting of obstructing ureterolithiasis when compared with components of the standard work-up.
Evaluation of 3-year clinical outcome of hybrid myocardial revascularization (HMR) compared to conventional revascularization strategies in patients with multivessel coronary artery disease involving the proximal left anterior descending artery.
Retrospective matched cohort study based on a prospective feasibility study including 103 elective patients undergoing staged HMR from October 2010 until February 2012. The Western Denmark Heart Registry was used to identify patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and multivessel percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) by matching on number of diseased vessels, age and comorbidity score. Primary endpoint was the composite rate of major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) at 3-year follow-up. Secondary endpoints included individual MACCE components, acute kidney injury, and cardiovascular readmissions.
There was no difference between MACCE in the three groups (HMR 31.1%; CABG 20.4%; PCI 20.4%,
= .11). Estimates of) by matching on number of diseased vessels, age and comorbidity score. Primary endpoint was the composite rate of major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) at 3-year follow-up. Secondary endpoints included individual MACCE components, acute kidney injury, and cardiovascular readmissions. Results. There was no difference between MACCE in the three groups (HMR 31.1%; CABG 20.4%; PCI 20.4%, p = .11). Estimates of repeat revascularization were significantly increased with HMR versus CABG. In the CABG group, fewest patients required cardiovascular readmissions though with the highest incidence of acute kidney injury. Conclusions. selleck kinase inhibitor HMR was not superior with respect to MACCE compared with CABG and PCI. It may, however, represent a safe alternative to conventional revascularization treatment considering the specific procedure-associated morbidity.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical evolution, structural anomalies associated and neonatal outcomes of fetal neck hyperextension in two cases with prenatal ultrasound diagnosis in two different gestational ages.

In 2019, two cases of fetal hyperextension came to our attention. Follow-up information was obtained from hospital medical records and obstetrical care providers.

Two woman were investigated in our institution for the presence of fetal abnormalities in the II and III trimester, respectively. In both cases, fetal attitude presented persistent fetal neck hyperextension. One of the two fetuses had a mild ventriculomegaly and suspected for micrognathia. Both had an amniotic fluid increase. One of two had no movement in the lower and upper limbs in ultrasound scans associated with club foot and suspected scoliosis. Both were born by cesarean section with pretty different prognosis one healthy baby had a retarded psychomotor development and the other one died after 6months. A precise diagnosis was possible only in one case.
