Generalization of /ɹ/ was evaluated through acoustic measurements and perceptual ratings of pretreatment/posttreatment probes. Results Five participants demonstrated acquisition of practiced words during the combined treatment package. Three participants demonstrated a clinically significant degree of generalization to untreated words on posttreatment probes. Randomization tests indicated one participant demonstrated a significant advantage for visual-acoustic over ultrasound biofeedback. Participants' auditory-perceptual acuity on an /ɹ/-/w/ identification task was identified as a possible correlate of generalization following treatment. Conclusions Most participants did not demonstrate a statistically significant difference in acoustic productions between the ultrasound and visual-acoustic conditions, but one participant showed greater improvement in /ɹ/ during visual-acoustic biofeedback. Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is a clinically significant presentation of coronary heart disease. Genetic information has been proposed to improve prediction beyond well-established clinical risk factors. While polygenic scores (PS) can capture an individual's genetic risk for ACS, its prediction performance may vary in the context of diverse correlated clinical conditions. Here, we aimed to test whether clinical conditions impact the association between PS and ACS.
We explored the association between 405 clinical conditions diagnosed before baseline and 9080 incident cases of ACS in 387 832 individuals from the UK Biobank. Results were replicated in 6430 incident cases of ACS in 177 876 individuals from FinnGen.
We identified 80 conventional (eg, stable angina pectoris and type 2 diabetes) and unconventional (eg, diaphragmatic hernia and inguinal hernia) associations with ACS. The association between PS and ACS was consistent in individuals with and without most clinical conditions. However, a diagnosibe more appropriate for prediction of ACS in asymptomatic individuals than symptomatic individuals with clinical suspicion for coronary heart disease.Purpose Generalizations can be made about the order in which speech sounds are added to a child's phonemic inventory and the ways that child speech deviates from adult targets in a given language. Developmental and disordered speech patterns are presumed to reflect differences in both phonological knowledge and skilled motor control, but the relative contribution of motor control remains unknown. The ability to differentially control anterior versus posterior regions of the tongue increases with age, and thus, complexity of tongue shapes is believed to reflect an individual's capacity for skilled motor control of speech structures. Method The current study explored the relationship between tongue complexity and phonemic development in children (ages 4-6 years) with and without speech sound disorder producing various phonemes. Using established metrics of tongue complexity derived from ultrasound images, we tested whether tongue complexity incrementally increased with age in typical development, whether tongueese measures could help identify individuals with a prominent motor component to their speech sound disorder and could help match those individuals with a corresponding motor-based treatment approach. Most research efforts to understand the mechanisms of salt sensitivity of blood pressure have focused on renal regulation of sodium. However, salt retention or plasma volume expansion is not different between salt-sensitive and salt-resistant individuals. Such a definition is shown to be consistent with the one based on the minima of the kinematic viscosity. For the hard sphere, this is shown to be an exact solution. For Lennard-Jones spheres and dimers and for some simple real fluids, this relation holds very well. This crossover line passes nearby the critical point, and for all studied fluids, it is well captured by the critical excess entropy curve for atomic fluids, emphasizing the link between transport properties and local structure.This work presents a novel theoretical description of the nonequilibrium thermodynamics of charge separation in organic solar cells (OSCs). Using stochastic thermodynamics, we take realistic state populations derived from the phonon-assisted dynamics of electron-hole pairs within photoexcited organic bilayers to connect the kinetics with the free energy profile of charge separation. Hereby, we quantify for the first time the difference between nonequilibrium and equilibrium free energy profile. We analyze the impact of energetic disorder and delocalization on free energy, average energy, and entropy. For a high disorder, the free energy profile is well-described as equilibrated. We observe significant deviations from equilibrium for delocalized electron-hole pairs at a small disorder, implying that charge separation in efficient OSCs proceeds via a cold but nonequilibrated pathway. Both a large Gibbs entropy and large initial electron-hole distance provide an efficient charge separation, while a decrease in the free energy barrier does not necessarily enhance charge separation.
