Karger AG, Basel.INTRODUCTION The Intelligibility in Context Scale (ICS) is a parent-report scale by which parents can rate their child's functional speech intelligibility according to seven different communicative partners. Translations, linguistic adaptations, and psychometric and norming data for ICS have been achieved in different languages. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the ICS (ICS-I) in terms of internal consistency, test-retest reliability, criterion validity (correlation with speech measures), and construct validity, and to investigate potential differences between mothers' and fathers' subjective ratings in ICS-I. METHODS Italian-speaking children aged 3.0-5.11 years (n = 364), without major developmental impairment, were recruited in kindergartens. All children were independently rated by their mothers (ICS-Im) and fathers (ICS-If). A subsample of parents (n = 127) rated ICS-I twice after 3 weeks (test-retest reliability). Children were administered a naming and a word fluence in rating a child's intelligibility. Findings support cross-linguistic research, and further investigation could promote the application of ICS-I as an outcome measure in children with speech sound disorders. © 2020 S. Karger AG, Basel.Osteopontin (OPN) is an acidic phosphorylated glycoprotein involved in a wide range of biological activities, such as cell proliferation and differentiation, as well as immunomodulatory functions. OPN contains integrin and CD44 binding sites, and it exerts its multiple functions by binding to its receptors on the cell membrane to trigger various cellular signaling pathways. It is generated by a variety of cell types, including epithelial cells and immune cells. OPN appears in most body fluids, such as milk and blood, and is present at a high concentration in human milk but not in bovine milk. Milk OPN is relatively resistant to digestion, and orally ingested OPN can enter the circulatory system. Milk OPN may, therefore, play essential roles in the development in early life. selleck compound The impact of milk OPN on development has been investigated using cell models, animal models, and randomized clinical trials. Recent OPN studies strongly suggest that milk OPN plays important roles in intestinal proliferation and maturation, brain myelination, and neurodevelopment, as well as immune development. © 2020 Nestlé Nutrition Institute, Switzerland/S. Karger AG, Basel.BACKGROUND Vasopressin is elevated in response to heat and dehydration and has been postulated to have a role in the chronic kidney disease of unknown origin being observed in Central America. The aims of this study were to examine whether the vasopressin pathway, as measured by copeptin, is associated with the presence of kidney dysfunction, and to examine whether higher fluid intake is associated with lower circulating copeptin and thereby preserves kidney health among sugarcane workers exposed to hot conditions. METHODS Utilizing a longitudinal study of 105 workers in Guatemala, we examined relationships between hydration indices, plasma copeptin concentrations, and kidney function markers at 3 times during the 6-month harvest. We also examined whether baseline copeptin concentrations increased the odds of developing an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) less then 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. RESULTS Copeptin concentrations were positively associated with serum creatinine (β 1.41, 95% CI 0.88-2.03) and negatively associated with eGFR (β -1.07, 95% CI -1.43 to -0.70). In addition, as workers improved their hydration (measured by increases in fluid balance), copeptin concentrations were reduced, and this reduction was associated with an improvement in kidney function. CONCLUSIONS Results suggest that copeptin should be studied as a potential prognostic biomarker. © 2020 S. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical, demographic, and genetic characteristics and type of glomerular lesions in pediatric FMF patients who underwent kidney biopsy. METHODS The data of 30 pediatric FMF patients with biopsy-proven glomerulopathy were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were grouped into 2 categories as amyloid nephropathy (AN, n = 16) and non-amyloid nephropathy (N-AN, n = 14). RESULTS The mean age at FMF diagnosis was 7.2 ± 3.0 years. The AN group showed higher rates of hypertension, higher levels of 24-h protein excretion and serum creatinine, and lower estimated glomerular filtration rate at the time of kidney biopsy. The rate of ESRD was found to be higher in the AN group (p = 0.011). Mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis was the most common pathology in the N-AN group (21.4%). The frequency of amyloidosis was significantly higher in patients with homozygous p.M694V mutations than non-homozygous p.M694V mutations (p = 0.039). CONCLUSIONS In children with FMF, nephropathy is rare. To our knowledge, this is the first study performed in pediatric FMF patients exploring amyloid and non-amyloid glomerulopathies. Patients with AN had higher rates of proteinuria, lower estimated glomerular filtration rate levels, and higher blood pressure than N-AN patients at the time of biopsy. © 2020 S. The global trend of an increase in the frequency of usage of smartphones, that is, prolonged screen time, is closely related to problematic smartphone use. The aim of our study was to measure the level of problematic smartphone use in a student population through the assessment of the smartphone screen time and the determination of the student chronotype, as well as through the correlation between these variables. METHODS The participants were students of medicine of both sexes. Problematic smartphone use was measured by the short version of the Smartphone Addiction Scale. Smartphone screen time was assessed by the free Android application Quality Time. Chronotype was established by the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire. RESULTS Almost one quarter (22.7%) of students involved in our study could be classified as being "smartphone-addicted". The students with problematic smartphone use more frequently (statistical significance) belonged to the evening chronotype.
