Scientific research can offer the joy of discovery. For many graduating neurosurgeons, often, a seminar, class, or instructional module is their first and only formal exposure to the world of conducting research responsibly, to write down and report the results of such research. The pressure to publish scientific research is high, but any young neurosurgeon who is unaware of how predatory publishers operate can get duped by it and can lose their valuable and hard-fought research. Hence, we have attempted to provide an overview of all potentially predatory neurosurgery publications and provide some "red flags" to recognize them.

A suspected list of predatory publications was collected via a thorough review of the Neurosurgery journals listed in 4 major so-called blacklists, i.e., Beall's list, Manca's list, Cabell's blacklist, and Strinzel blacklist and then cross-referenced with UGC CARE whitelist to remove any potential legitimate journals. All journals with a scope of the Neurosurgery publication were sregarding a journal with "red-flags", the authors are advised to refer to whitelists to be on the safer side. The aim of this study was, to investigate the rate of return to sports (RTS) and physical activity after implantation of PFIA and to identify factors predictive of improved postoperative sporting ability.

Sixty-two patients with a mean age of 46 ± 11years, who underwent implantation of PFIA at the senior authors' institution, were enrolled. The transformed overall Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score improved from 67 ± 16 to 77 ± 19 (p = 0.003), Tegner activity scale results improved from 3 ± 2 points to 4 ± 1 points (p < 0.001), and scores on the visual analog scale (VAS) pain scale decreased from 6 ± 2 points to 3 ± 2 points (p < 0.001). The sports frequency increased from 1 ± 2 sessions to 2 ± 1 sessions per week (p = 0.001). Ninety-four percent of the patients who did not fail could return to the same or higher level of sports, with 74% of the patients reporting an improved ability to perform sports. No preoperative factors could be detected to significantly influence RTS after surgery.

PFIA is a valid treatment option for the active patient with end-stage isolated patellofemoral OA. Reliable improvements in knee function, pain, and participation in low-impact sports were found.

IV.Direct consumption on free-living cercariae stages of trematodes by non-host organisms interferes with trematode transmission and leads to reduced infections in the next suitable hosts. Consumer functional responses provide a useful tool to examine relationships between consumption rates and ecologically relevant prey densities, whilst also accounting for abiotic factors that likely influence consumption rates. We investigated how temperature influences the consumer functional response of the amphipod Gammarus lacustris towards the cercariae of three freshwater trematodes (Diplostomum, Apatemon and Trichobilharzia). Amphipods displayed different functional responses towards the parasites, with Type II responses for Diplostomum and Type I responses for Apatemon prey. Temperature did not alter the consumption rate of the amphipod predator. Trichobilharzia was likely consumed at similar proportions as Diplostomum; however, this could not be fully evaluated due to low replication. Whilst Type II responses of invertebrate predators are common to various invertebrate prey types, this is the first time a non-filter feeding predator has been shown to exhibit Type I response towards cercarial prey. The prey-specific consumption patterns of amphipods were related to cercarial distribution in the water column rather than to the size of cercariae or temperature influence. The substantial energy flow into food webs by non-host consumer organisms highlights the importance of understanding the mechanisms that modulate functional responses and direct predation in the context of parasitic organisms.The dry cell weight (DCW) measurement is one of the preferred methods to determine the growth of filamentous fungi. However, this technique is not applicable to insoluble culture media, besides being possibly influenced by the presence of extracellular biomass. The standard plate counting (SPC) is a reference method for detecting viable cells; however, it is referred as imprecise. In this study, we did a comprehensive analysis of the errors associated to each procedure and also determined the growth kinetics of Fusarium oxysporum in soluble (DCW and SPC) and insoluble (SPC) culture media. Finally, we used the production of bikaverin in airlift bioreactor containing insoluble medium as a case study to estimate red pigment production and to monitor biomass growth via SPC. We concluded that SPC can be used to give reliable fungal growth kinetics in media with insoluble matter, yielding errors equivalent to DCW depending on the number of replicates done for serial dilutions and plate counting.
