We addressed issues by deliberate study design decisions and engagement with online community advocates.

Using social media to recruit hard-to-reach populations may be a successful way to engage them in research. Although researchers may remain compliant with the institutional review board of their facilities and are faithful to the tenets of The Belmont Report, unanticipated ethical issues may arise directly or indirectly as a result of using social media. This article identifies these issues and provides suggestions for dealing with them.

The study aimed to investigate efficacy of citalopram in pregnant women with panic disorder.

The study data with 22 patients were retrospectively collected from clinical registers. The study was conducted in patients with and without comorbid major depression. The patients were evaluated using the Structured Clinical Interview for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, the Clinical Global Impression-Improvement Scale, the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety.

The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety scores were significantly reduced after treatment with citalopram at 20 mg/d for 8 weeks. The response rate based on Clinical Global Impression-Improvement Scale was 68.2%. Patients with comorbid major depression seemed to have a lower response rate compared with nondepressed patients.

The current study suggests that citalopram may be beneficial for in pregnant women with panic disorder.

Selleckchem PKR-IN-C16 However, differences in the selection of anesthetic drugs, surgical methods and other factors may affect the extent to which preclinical models reflect the human condition. This review summarizes these factors. We searched pertinent literature from the MEDLINE and Web of Science databases, and reviewed differences in rodent strain, anesthesia method, sex, surgical method, timing of surgery, and factors influencing postoperative evaluation. In particular, circadian rhythm was found to have a significant impact on the outcome of cerebral infarction in rodent models. This information will enable researchers to quickly and clearly select appropriate modeling methods, acquire reliable quantitative experimental results, and obtain basic data for fundamental mechanism research.Mindfulness meditation has become a promising intervention for promoting health and well-being. Neuroimaging studies have shown its beneficial effects on brain functional activity, connectivity, and structures following months to years of practice. A series of randomized controlled trials indicated that one form of mindfulness meditation, the integrative body-mind training (IBMT) induces brain functional and structural changes in brain regions related to self-control networks such as the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) after 2-10 h of practice. However, whether IBMT could change brain metabolism in the ACC remains unexplored. Utilizing a noninvasive 3T proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, our results showed a significant increase in glutamate metabolism in the rostral ACC following 10 h of IBMT, suggesting that brief training not only increases ACC activity and structure, but also induces neurochemical changes in regions of the self-control networks. To our knowledge, this is the first study demonstrating the positive effects on brain metabolism in the ACC following brief intervention, suggesting a potential mechanism and implications of mindfulness meditation in ameliorating disorders such as addiction, depression and schizophrenia, which often involve the dysfunction of self-control networks and glutamatergic system (i.e. lower glutamate metabolism).Closed-head, frontal impacts in which the brain undergoes both lateral and rotational acceleration comprise the majority of human traumatic brain injury (TBI). Here, we utilize a clinically relevant model to examine the effects of a single concussion on aspects of brain integrity the blood-brain barrier, the perineuronal nets (PNNs), and diffuse axonal injury. Adult, male Sprague-Dawley rats received either a frontal, closed-head concussive TBI, or no injury and were evaluated at 1- or 7-day post-injury. Using immunolabeling for albumin, we observed a significant increase in the permeability of the blood-brain barrier at 1-, but not 7-day post-injury. Breakdown of the PNN, as measured by the binding of wisteria floribunda, was observed at 1-day post-injury in the dorsal, lateral, and ventral cortices. This difference was resolved at 7-day. Finally, axonal injury was identified at both 1- and 7-day post-injury. This preclinical model of closed-head, frontal TBI presents a useful tool with which to understand better the acute pathophysiology of a single, frontal TBI.Previous studies have shown that the cross-modal pre-preparation effect is an important factor for audiovisual integration. However, the facilitating influence of the pre-preparation effect on the integration of emotional cues remains unclear. Therefore, this study examined the emotional pre-preparation effect during the multistage process of audiovisual integration. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while participants performed a synchronous or asynchronous integration task with fearful or neutral stimuli. The results indicated that, compared with the sum of the unisensory presentation of visual (V) and auditory (A) stimuli (A+V), only fearful audiovisual stimuli induced a decreased N1 and an enhanced P2; this was not found for the neutral stimuli. Moreover, the fearful stimuli triggered a larger P2 than the neutral stimuli in the audiovisual condition, but not in the sum of the combined (A+V) waveforms. Our findings imply that, in the early perceptual processing stage and perceptual fine processing stage, fear improves the processing efficiency of the emotional audiovisual integration.
