The initiative showed that a sustained multifaceted approach can increase home dialysis utilisation.This study sought to determine how the residents of Pohang, Korea, perceive geothermal plants after the 2017 Pohang earthquake by applying social representation theory through a mixed-method approach incorporating qualitative and quantitative research. The residents' perception of the geothermal plant was largely anchored to their perception of nuclear power plants. At the time of the Gyeongju earthquake in 2016, public discourse on nuclear accidents developed and was thereafter perpetuated by the Pohang earthquake victims via cognitive anchoring. The survey results demonstrated that Pohang residents had a significantly negative opinion on geothermal plants regardless of safety, climate change mitigation, and economic factors. Upon analyzing the respondents' energy preferences through factor analysis, geothermal power plants were found to aggregate in the same category as nuclear power plants. This result statistically confirms that Pohang residents associate geothermal power plants with the risk discourse on nuclear power plants.Introduction Motor neurone disease (MND) is characterized by rapidly progressive motor neurone degeneration which leads to muscle wasting. Mortality and morbidity are due to respiratory muscle failure which may be offset by ventilation. The aim of this observational study was to quantify the number and characteristics of patients living with MND choosing tracheostomy ventilation (TV) in the UK. Methods Long-term ventilation services in the UK were invited to undertake a retrospective 5-year audit of MND patients under their care between April 2013 and March 2018 who had TV. Patient characteristics, the time spent on ventilation, hospital length of stay, discharge destination, and survival data were collected. Results Sixty-eight MND patients were initiated on TV over the 5-year period. Eighty-one percent of patients received TV in an emergency setting with more than a third of these undiagnosed at presentation. Patients choosing elective TV were more likely to be male (85%) have a bulbar presentation (54%) and an increased survival of 10 months over the observation period. The mean length of hospital stay post TV was 136 days. Two-thirds of patients were discharged to their own home. Conclusion Very few patients living with MND in the UK are currently receiving TV. In those who choose TV, there may be a survival advantage to planning an elective procedure. Despite the long inpatient stay and high care costs involved a majority of patients survived and were discharged to their own home.Chemical investigation of the root of Zanthoxylum paracanthum afforded 1 new alkamide derivative, (2E,4E)-6-oxo-N-isobutyldeca-2,4-dienamide (1) together with 10 known congeners including one phenolic amide (2), four benzophenanthridines (3 - 6), three indolonaphthyridines (7 - 9) and two lignans (10 and 11). Their structures were elucidated by a combination of spectroscopic and spectrometric data. Using resazurin reduction assay, the crude extract (10 µg/mL) and isolates (10 µM) were screened for their cytotoxic activities against the drug-sensitive (CCRF-CEM) leukemia cell line and its multidrug-resistant counterpart (CEM/ADR5000). Compounds 3, 4 and 6 showed cytotoxicity against CCRF-CEM with IC50 values of 2.00 ± 0.33, 2.31 ± 0.20 and 0.11 ± 0.04 µM, respectively. Only compound 6 exhibited strong cytotoxic activity against CEM/ADR5000 with an IC50 value of 2.34 ± 0.34 µM in comparison with the standard drug doxorubicin which showed IC50 values of 0.01 ± 0.14 (CCRF-CEM) and 26.78 ± 3.30 µM (CEM/ADR5000).This is the first report concerning the natural products of the hitherto unstudied Lactuca plumieri (L.) Gren. & Godr., a member of the tribe Cichorieae (Asteraceae). From aerial parts and roots of this plant, five sesquiterpene lactones and one coumarin were isolated. The compounds were identified as sonchuside A, 11β,13-dihydrolactucin-8-O-acetate, 11β,13-dihydrolactucin, cichorioside B, 11β,13-dihydrolactucin-8-O-acetate-15-O-β-glucopyranoside and coumarin - cichoriin. Their structures were established by 1H NMR. Moreover, HPLC/PAD analysis of a hydroalcoholic extract from the aerial parts of the plant revealed the presence of caffeic acid derivatives, coumarins and flavonoids commonly found in lettuces.
Penicillin is the conventional treatment for all stages of syphilis, including ocular and neurosyphilis, according to the recommendations by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention Sexually Transmitted Disease. This case series highlighted three cases of ocular syphilis which showed prompt treatment response as early as 24h after the adjunctive intravitreal ceftazidime injection.

Case Series.

In case 1, there was significant improvement in the vision and vitritis after 24h of a single intravitreal ceftazidime injection. In case 2, the patient achieved his best vision after a total of three intravitreal injections in his left eye and one in his right eye. In case 3, there was a further resolution of perivascular sheathing and retinal haemorrhages seen 1week after a single intravitreal ceftazidime injection.

The efficacy of intravitreal ceftazidime injection as a local adjunctive therapy in ocular syphilis treatment is noteworthy. It can be considered in cases which show suboptimal or slower treatment response despite early commencement of systemic penicillin to prevent devastating ocular sequelae.
