Children adopted from care are more likely to have experienced early adversity, but little is known about the impact of early adversity on later post-traumatic stress (PTS) symptoms.

To investigate sub-groups of adversity in a sample of adopted children and examine the association with later PTS symptoms.

A study of British children adopted from care using social worker records (N = 374) and questionnaire-based longitudinal study of n = 58 children over 4-years post adoptive placement.

We used latent class analysis to identify subgroups of children based on commonalities in perinatal and postnatal adversity experienced prior to adoption and examined differences in PTS symptoms at 4-years post-placement between subgroups.

Nearly one in five (19 %) children were in the clinical or borderline ranges for symptoms of PTS arousal, 14 % for PTS avoidance and 8 % for PTS intrusion. The 5-class solution fitted the data best, with one class characterized by children with a low probability of experiencing any adversity, one perinatal adversity class and three classes capturing different patterns of adversity. The multiple complex adversity class involving both perinatal and postnatal adversity had significantly higher symptoms of PTS avoidance and arousal than other sub-groups.

The prevalence and complexity of PTS symptoms among adoptive children highlights the need for effective interventions considering different profiles of early adversity.

Carmel, Israel, in 2010, caused massive destruction of carbonate rocks. The thermal shock caused extreme exfoliation, producing large and flat clasts, affecting rocks to a depth of up to 20 cm. A decade after the fire, most flakes and spalls disappeared from the rock outcrops and adjacent soils. From these observations, this study pursued two objectives (a) to monitor and analyze the spatio-temporal distribution of the disintegrated flakes 10 years after the fire and (b) to test the hypothesis that fires contribute to increased soil stoniness via physical and chemical flake erosion. The studied area included five lithostratigraphic units composed of chalk, limestone, and dolomite. The Schmidt Hammer test showed that after a decade, most of the spalled surface on the burned outcrops was lost, exposing new rock surfaces to atmospheric and weathering processes. The spalls and flakes were broken down and pulverized. The most prominent effects were changes in surface stoniness on the rendzina soils over the chalks, while there was less impact on the dolomite and limestone samples. The stoniness of the non-burned chalk was 23-39% and increased significantly to 69-86% in the burned area. find more Chalk erosion produced large (>16 mm, median 8-16 mm) and abundant gravel, suggesting fragmentation of large spalls, and particles that lost their bladed shapes becoming oblate and equant. While earlier works suggested that increasing rock fragment cover is often associated with the removal of fine particles, our results showed a substantial increase in rock fragments due to fire-induced exfoliation of rock surfaces, leading to long-term changes in soil properties. We therefore propose that the size, shape, and spatial distribution of rock fragments should be considered when examining the effects of rock fragments on hydrological and geomorphological processes or on post-fire soil rehabilitation.Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) reside in shallow coastal waters where they are exposed to potentially toxic elements (PTEs) through dietary intake. We quantitatively assessed the risk posed by eight PTEs to the health of S. chinensis by determining their concentration in 13 fish species. The fish species represented the primary prey of S. chinensis in the South China Sea. Zn and Mn were the most dominant elements in fish at all sampling locations with concentrations ranges of 19.93-67.63 mg kg -1 dry weight (dw) and 1.52-68.2 mg kg -1 dw, respectively. The highest Zn concentration in fish was found in Coilia mystus (72.65 mg kg-1 dw) followed by Liza carinatus (62.57 mg kg-1 dw). At Jiangmen, Zn concentration was significantly lower in benthopelagic fish than in pelagic fish (p less then 0.05, one-way ANOVA), while no significant difference was observed in other metals. The health risk posed by dietary intake assessed using the toxicity reference value showed that PTEs did not significant health risk to S. chinensis. In contrast, the risk quotient (RQ) based on reference doses ranged from 2.17 to 54.63 in prey fish that were contaminated with Zn and Cr indicating a potential health risk to S. chinensis in the South China Sea. The number of PTEs that posed a health risk varied between sites with seven out of eight PTEs above threshold at Jiangmen and six out of eight at Zhanjiang and Qinzhou. This study showed fish niche and location may influence the health risk posed by consumption of PTE-contaminated fish.Anthropogenic pollution such as the application of pesticides poses a major threat to many (non-target) organisms. However, little is known about the persistence of harmful effects or potential recovery in response to a period of exposure to a sublethal insecticide dose. Adults of the mustard leaf beetle, Phaedon cochleariae (Coleoptera Chrysomelidae), were either exposed to a sublethal concentration of the pyrethroid λ-cyhalothrin for two weeks or kept unexposed as control. During, immediately after and at a delayed time after the exposure, consumption and reproduction, i.e., number of eggs laid and hatching success, were assessed. In addition, long-term effects on unexposed offspring were investigated. Exposure to λ-cyhalothrin reduced the consumption during the insecticide exposure, but led to compensatory feeding in females at a delayed time after exposure. The reproductive output of females was impaired during and directly after λ-cyhalothrin exposure. At the delayed time point there was no clear evidence for a recovery, as the reproduction of heavier females was still negatively affected, while lighter females showed an enhanced reproduction.
