To determine whether selected genes and plasma markers involved in energy homeostasis are associated with sleep disruption or duration in adults with HIV/AIDS.

A sample of 289 adults with HIV/AIDS wore a wrist actigraph for 72h to estimate total sleep time (TST) and wake after sleep onset (WASO). Twenty-three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) spanning 5 energy homeostasis genes (adiponectin [ADIPOQ], ghrelin [GHRL], leptin [LEP], peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha [PPARA], and -gamma [PPARG]) were genotyped using a custom array. Plasma markers of energy homeostasis (adiponectin, ghrelin, leptin) were measured by commercial multiplex assay.

After adjusting for demographic and clinical characteristics (race/ethnicity, gender, CD4 cell count, waist circumference, medications), both WASO and TST were associated with SNPs in ADIPOQ (rs182052), LEP (rs10244329, rs3828942), PPARA (rs135551, rs4253655), and PPARG (rs709151). Additional SNPs in ADIPOQ were associated with WASO (rs1501299, rs382ce for associations between energy homeostasis genetics and poor sleep, and provide direction for pharmacological intervention research.
Previous studies have shown that children with autism have sleep disturbances and elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of aquatic exercise on sleep habits and two certain sleep-related cytokines of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

Forty boys with ASD (aged 6-14) were recruited and randomly assigned to an aquatic exercise (n=20) or a control group (n=20). Participants in aquatic exercise group performed water-based activities for 10 weeks/2 sessions per week/60min, while control group didn't get any intervention. The serum levels of Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and sleep quality were measured before and after the intervention.

Results revealed that aquatic exercise may improve sleep quality and reduce the serum levels of IL-1β and TNF-α in children with ASD compared to control group.

Overall, it is recommended that physicians and educators should provide a safe and effective exercise environment for ASD children to alleviate sleep issues and inflammatory biomarkers.

In countries like Ghana, where small-scale gold mining is a highly important economic sector, the activity is also expected to cause local pollution. This study is based on a hypothesis that the mining activity in Ghana is causing more widespread soil pollution also outside active mining sites, and that the main part of regional differences in soil concentrations of mercury might come from pollution. Little systematic and dependable data has been collected to assess the extent of mercury contamination of soils in areas outside active mining areas. The regional aspect of mercury pollution from mining has not been studied in Ghana or other countries with a large small-scale gold mining sector. Systematic collection of soil samples on a 25 × 25 km2 net covering the entire country was carried out to ensure the representativeness of data and to allow calculation of spatial trends. The soil concentrations found in one-third of the country, where most intensive mining takes place, are three times higher than concentrations in the rest of the country. This difference cannot be explained by sources of natural variation in mercury concentrations but can be explained by decades of atmospheric deposition. It is therefore likely that the mining activity has caused a more widespread increase in soil concentrations, also outside active mining sites. The mercury concentrations found are on average 0.024 mg kg-1, which is low compared to published studies from other countries and regions and estimated world averages. All measured concentrations are well below soil quality criteria for human health. The build-up of soil concentrations in the mining area is still problematic because mercury is a hazardous substance in the environment.The physico-chemical properties of submicron aerosols were measured in the spring of 2018 and 2019 over the Yellow Sea onboard the Gisang 1 research vessel. Aitken and accumulation mode particles dominated the aerosol number size distributions over the Yellow Sea. A distinct new particle formation (NPF) and growth event was observed, the spatial extent of which was estimated to cover at least 200 km × 400 km of the Yellow Sea. The general characteristics of NPF and growth over the Yellow Sea were similar to those in rural areas.
