In addition, resveratrol seems to promote browning by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR), while the lack of changes in mitochondrial biogenesis suggests that probably the browning process occurs by direct resveratrol-mediated upregulation of ucp1 mRNA expression.PURPOSE Child dental anxiety (CDA) and uncooperative dental behaviour are common. We aimed to assess the prevalence of CDA (self- and proxy- reported) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) children related to their dental behaviour. METHODS Data were collected from 312 questionnaires obtained from 156 parent/child (mean age 9.95 ± 2.17 years) pairs attending a postgraduate dental hospital. Demographics, self/proxy- reported CDA scores via a six-question, five-point Likert scale, of the Modified CDA Scale-faces version (MCDAS-f where ≥ 19 was severe CDA) and Frankl Behaviour Rating Scale (FBRS) scores were compared and analysed. Chi-square test, Pearson's correlation, Kappa- coefficient, one-way ANOVA and independent t test statistical analysis were used (p less then 0.05). RESULTS The prevalence of self and proxy severe CDA was 22.4% (n = 35) and 33.3% (n = 52) respectively, with 9% (n = 14) being dentally- uncooperative. In both groups, extractions caused the highest CDA followed by injections and fillings (p less then 0.001). The mean scores for self-reported/proxy-reported CDA were 15.02 (± 4.90)/15.70 (± 6.07) respectively. There was a positive linear correlation between self- and proxy- reported CDA scores and a negative linear correlation between self/proxy- reported CDA scores and the FBRS (p less then 0.001). Self/proxy concordance of severe anxiety/none-to-moderate- anxiety was fair (68.6%, kappa = 0.23, p = 0.003). Both self/FBRS and proxy/FBRS concordance of severe anxiety/none-to-moderate- anxiety/behaviour was fair (78.8%, kappa = 0.23, p = 0.001) and (71.8%, kappa = 0.22, p less then 0.001) respectively. CONCLUSIONS Considering the limitations of the present study in a UAE child population sample, the prevalence of CDA from extractions, injections and fillings was 22.4% (self- reported) and 33% (proxy reported). There was fair agreement between child- self and parent- proxy- reported CDA. Increased CDA led to uncooperative dental behaviour.BACKGROUND Infectious complications are significant causes of morbidity and mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT). They occur variably over different periods, with scant data reported from Lebanon and neighboring countries. In this study, we described the pre-engraftment neutropenic phase, febrile episodes, and peri-transplant medical complications in patients undergoing allo-HCT at a tertiary-care hospital. METHODS This is a retrospective chart review of patients who underwent allo-HCT between 2007 and 2016 at Makassed General Hospital in Beirut, Lebanon. Data were extracted from medical records, the HCT registry, and medical laboratory logbooks. Selleckchem Ipatasertib RESULTS One hundred and six patients were included, 75% having hematologic malignancies and 13% aplastic anemia. None received antibacterial prophylaxis with fluoroquinolones. Yet from conditioning chemotherapy till the say before HCT, 32% of the patients received broad-spectrum antibiotics (BSA) due to fever or infection. At the dpneumonia, and myelodysplastic syndrome increased the risk of death.Corn gluten feed (CGF) is a co-product of wet milling that can replace energy or fiber ingredients in dairy cow rations. The present meta-analysis examines how inclusion of CGF can affect dry matter intake (DMI), milk yield (MY), milk components, and ruminal fermentation parameters. A literature search was conducted to identify papers published from 1990 to 2018. Effect size for all parameters was calculated as standardized mean difference with a 95% confidence interval. Heterogeneity was determined using Q test and I2 statistic, while meta-regression was used to examine factors influencing heterogeneity. Results indicate that feeding CGF increased the effect size for DMI and MY. No differences were observed for effect size for percentage milk fat or protein; however, increases were observed in the effect size for milk fat yield, milk protein yield, milk lactose percentage, and milk lactose yield. Ruminal fermentation parameters revealed a decrease in the effect size for pH and acetate and an increase for propionate. No differences were observed in the effect size for total VFA or butyrate. The Q test demonstrated heterogeneity (P less then 0.1) for MY, MFP, and pH. The results indicate differences in forage intake between groups receiving CGF and control as an important factor contributing to heterogeneity for DMI, MFP, and pH. It can be concluded from this meta-analysis that in addition to increased DMI, inclusion of CGF in cow diets increases MY and improves milk components. Furthermore, inclusion of CGF in the diet lowers ruminal pH while decreasing acetate and increasing propionate contents. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of on-farm risk factors and health effects associated with contamination of dairy feeds with aflatoxins (AFs), zearalenone (ZEN), trichothecenes (T-2), deoxynivalenol (DON), and fumonisins (FB) in Jordan. A pre-tested and validated questionnaire was used to determine on-farm practices and health effects associated with high levels of mycotoxins. A total of 88 feed samples were collected from the 37 farms participating in the study and analyzed using commercially available ELISA kits. The mean total AF concentration exceeded the European Union (EU) limit in alfalfa (4%) and total mixed ration (TMR) (3%) samples. Similarly, levels exceeding EU limits were observed for T-2 in alfalfa (29%), TMR (30%), and corn silage (4%). The average concentrations of ZEN and FB were 300 ppb and 11,638 ppb, respectively, which were below the EU maximum limits in all feed samples examined. Intensive management system (OR = 7.70), imported feed (OR = 3.40), feed storage on the farm for more than 1-month duration (OR = 7.90), and not using antitoxins (OR = 2.30) were significantly (P less then 0.05) associated with high levels of mycotoxins in feed samples. A significant correlation (P less then 0.05) was evident between the presence of mycotoxins in dairy feed and feed refusal (R = 0.70), low milk production (R = 0.50), diarrhea problems (R = 0.60), infertility (R = 0.50), and repeated breeder problems (R = 0.80). Results show that mycotoxin contamination in dairy feeds is a problem in Jordan, and appropriate measures need to be undertaken to reduce risks to human and animal health and improve production.
