Social media data are being increasingly used in conservation science to study human-nature interactions. User-generated content, such as images, video, text, and audio, and the associated metadata can be used to assess such interactions. A number of social media platforms provide free access to user-generated social media content. However, similar to any research involving people, scientific investigations based on social media data require compliance with highest standards of data privacy and data protection, even when data are publicly available. Should social media data be misused, the risks to individual users' privacy and well-being can be substantial. We investigated the legal basis for using social media data while ensuring data subjects' rights through a case study based on the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation. The risks associated with using social media data in research include accidental and purposeful misidentification that has the potential to cause psychological or physical harm to an identified person. To collect, store, protect, share, and manage social media data in a way that prevents potential risks to users involved, one should minimize data, anonymize data, and follow strict data management procedure. Risk-based approaches, such as a data privacy impact assessment, can be used to identify and minimize privacy risks to social media users, to demonstrate accountability and to comply with data protection legislation. We recommend that conservation scientists carefully consider our recommendations in devising their research objectives so as to facilitate responsible use of social media data in conservation science research, for example, in conservation culturomics and investigations of illegal wildlife trade online.
Blood transfusions though life-saving are not entirely benign. They are the most overused procedure in the hospital and have been under scrutiny by the 'Choosing Wisely campaign'. The strict adoption of restrictive transfusion guidelines could improve patient outcomes while reducing cost.

In this study, we evaluate adherence to restrictive transfusion guidelines, along with hospital mortality and length of stay (LOS) in transfusion events with a pre-transfusion haemoglobin (Hb) ≥7 g/dl. Additionally, we evaluated associated costs accrued due to unnecessary transfusions.

We conducted a retrospective observational study in a 64-bed medical intensive care unit (MICU) of an academic medical centre involving all adult patients (N = 957) requiring packed red blood cell transfusion between January 2015 and December 2015.

In total, 3140 units were transfused with a mean pre-transfusion Hb of 6.75 ± 0.86 g/dl. Nine hundred forty-four (30%) transfusion events occurred with a pre-transfusion Hb ≥7 g/dl, and 385 (12.3%) of these occurred in patients without hypotension, tachycardia, use of vasopressors, or coronary artery disease. Forgoing them could have led to a savings of approximately 0.3 million dollars. Transfusion events with pre-transfusion Hb ≥7 g/dl were associated with an increased mortality in patients with acute blood loss (odds ratio [OR] 2.08, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.11-3.88; p = 0.02) and LOS in patients with chronic blood loss (β

To investigate the correlation between first trimester vaginal bleeding and preterm birth (PB), and to offer suggestions on the perinatal health care and preterm birth prevention.

A birth cohort study was conducted on 10 179 pregnant women. Unconditional logistic regression model was used to evaluate the associations between vaginal bleeding and preterm birth in sub-preterm groups.

Of the 10 179 pregnant women included, a total of 1001 women suffered from vaginal bleeding during the first trimester, of which 119 suffered from PB. Any vaginal bleeding increased the risk of PB. Severe bleeding was a high-risk factor of PB, associated with 4.8-fold risk of very PB, 2.7-fold risk of spontaneous PB without PROM (premature rupture of membrane) and 4.6-fold risk of medical induced PB. Bleeding prolonged more than 1 week increased 66% risk of PB and 36% risk of PB on initial episode happened in 5-12 weeks of gestation age, especially in moderate PB, in medical-induced PB and in spontaneous PB with PPROM (preterm premature rupture of membrane which is one cause of PB). Mild bleeding or bleeding within 1 week or initial episode happened within 4 weeks of gestation age possibly had no influence on PB.
