If the product of the X-ray spectrum and the quantum detection efficiency (QDE) of the detector are known, alongside the material of the scanned object, then beam hardening artefacts can be corrected algorithmically. In this work, a method for estimating the product of the X-ray spectrum and the detector's QDE is offered. The method approximates the product of the X-ray spectrum and the QDE as a Bézier curve, which requires only eight fitting parameters to be estimated. It is shown experimentally and through simulation that Bézier curves can be used to accurately simulate polychromatic attenuation and hence be used to correct beam hardening artefacts. The proposed method is tested using measured attenuation data and then used to calculate a beam hardening correction for an aluminium workpiece; the beam hardening correction leads to an increase in the contrast-to-noise ratio of the XCT data by 41% and the removal of cupping artefacts. Deriving beam hardening corrections in this manner is more versatile than using conventional material-specific step wedges.ATM and BRCA1 are DNA repair genes that play a central role in homologous recombination repair. However, the role of ATM and BRCA1 gene expression in head and neck cancer (HNC) is not well characterized. Here, we examined the prognostic role of ATM and BRCA1 expression in two HNC cohorts with and without betel quid (BQ) exposure. The results showed that the expression of ATM and BRCA1 was downregulated in BQ-associated HNC, as the BQ ingredient arecoline could suppress the expression of both genes. Low expression of either ATM or BRCA1 was correlated with poor overall survival (OS) and was an independent prognostic factor in multivariate analysis (ATM HR 1.895, p = 0.041; BRCA1 HR 2.163, p = 0.040). The combination of ATM and BRCA1 expression states further improved on the prediction of OS (HR 4.195, p = 0.001, both low vs. both high expression). Transcriptomic analysis showed that inhibition of ATM kinase by KU55933 induced apoptosis signaling and potentiated cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity. These data unveil poor prognosis in the HNC patient subgroup with low expression of ATM and BRCA1 and support the notion of ATM-targeted therapy.Additive manufacturing methods (AM) allow the production of complex-shaped lattice structures from a wide range of materials with enhanced mechanical properties, e.g., high strength to relative density ratio. These structures can be modified for various applications considering a transfer of a specific load or to absorb a precise amount of energy with the required deformation pattern. However, the structure design requires knowledge of the relationship between nonlinear material properties and lattice structure geometrical imperfections affected by manufacturing process parameters. A detailed analytical and numerical computational investigation must be done to better understand the behavior of lattice structures under mechanical loading. Different computational methods lead to different levels of result accuracy and reveal various deformational features. Therefore, this study focuses on a comparison of computational approaches using a quasi-static compression experiment of body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice structure manufactured of stainless steel 316L by selective laser melting technology. Models of geometry in numerical simulations are supplemented with geometrical imperfections that occur on the lattice structure's surface during the manufacturing process. They are related to the change of lattice struts cross-section size and actual shape. Results of the models supplemented with geometrical imperfections improved the accuracy of the calculations compared to the nominal geometry.Sweepoviruses are begomoviruses (genus Begomovirus, family Geminiviridae) with ssDNA genomes infecting sweet potato and other species of the family Convolvulaceae. Deltasatellites (genus Deltasatellite, family Tolecusatellitidae) are small-size non-coding DNA satellites associated with begomoviruses. In this study, the genetic diversity of deltasatellites associated with sweepoviruses infecting Ipomoea indica plants was analyzed by further sampling the populations where the deltasatellite sweet potato leaf curl deltasatellite 1 (SPLCD1) was initially found, expanding the search to other geographical areas in southern continental Spain and the Canary Islands. The sweepoviruses present in the samples coinfected with deltasatellites were also fully characterized by sequencing in order to define the range of viruses that could act as helper viruses in nature. Additionally, experiments were performed to assess the ability of a number of geminivirids (the monopartite tomato leaf deformation virus and the bipartite NW begomovirus Sida golden yellow vein virus, the bipartite OW begomovirus tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus, and the curtovirus beet curly top virus) to transreplicate SPLCD1 in their natural plant hosts or the experimental host Nicotiana benthamiana. The results show that SPLCD1 can be transreplicated by all the geminivirids assayed in N. benthamiana and by tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus in zucchini.
