Glyburide is mainly metabolized by the cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) enzyme and enters the liver via the transporter OATP1B3. The variants OATP1B3*4 (699 G>A; rs7311358) and CYP2C9*2 and *3 are known to have a significant influence on the hepatic uptake and metabolism of glyburide, with lower clearance than in the wild type. In an ancillary study of the INDAO trial, we selected 117 pregnant women with gestational diabetes treated by glyburide and assessed the role of the combined CYP2C9 and OATP1B3 genetic polymorphisms in hypoglycemia and glycemic control. Three groups were constituted (1) the wild-type genotype group (wild-type allele genotype for both CYP2C9*1 and OATP1B3*1 (699G)), (2) the intermediate group (carriers of CYP2C9*2 allele or OATP1B3*4 (699G>A) heterozygous), and (3) the variant group (carriers of CYP2C9*3 allele and/or OATP1B3*4 (699G>A) homozygous variant). We found that the risk of hypoglycemia was significantly higher in the variant genotype at the second week of treatment 20.0% (4/20) vs. 8.1% (3/37) in the intermediate group and 4.1% (2/49) in the wild-type genotype group (P = 0.03). The last daily dose of glyburide during pregnancy was lower for patients in the variant genotype group 4.7 mg (SD 3.5) vs. 8.7 mg (SD 5.7) in the wild-type group and 5.7 mg (SD 3.7) in the intermediate group (P less then 0.01). In conclusion, the no-function variants CYP2C9*3 and OATP1B3*4 are associated with a higher risk of hypoglycemia and a lower dose of glyburide in women with gestational diabetes treated with glyburide, which is consistent with the pharmacokinetic roles of both CYP2C9 and OATP1B3.
Values have been found to predict aggressive behavior in adolescents. Adolescents who endorse self-enhancement values typically exhibit more aggressive behaviors, while adolescents who endorse self-transcendent values are less likely to behave aggressively. The associations between values and aggression are low to moderate, suggesting that other factors might moderate them. The study examined whether these associations were moderated by adolescent popularity, an indication of social power.
The study included 906 adolescents from three cultures Brazilians (N=244), Jewish citizens of Israel (N=250), and Arabic citizens of Israel (N=409). Personal values were assessed using the Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ). Peer nominations were used to assess direct aggression and popularity.
Popularity moderated the associations between values and aggression while the aggressive behavior of popular adolescents was highly associated with their personal values, the behavior of unpopular adolescents was unrelated to their values. This effect consistently emerged across samples, with specific variations for gender and culture.

In tropical forests, phosphorus (P) is often considered the main limiting nutrient for plants. However, support for the P paradigm is limited, and N and cations might also control tropical forests functioning. We used a large-scale experiment to determine how the factorial addition of nitrogen (N), P and cations affected root productivity and traits related to nutrient acquisition strategies (morphological traits, phosphatase activity, arbuscular mycorrhizal colonisation and nutrient contents) in a primary rainforest growing on low-fertility soils in Central Amazonia after 1 yr of fertilisation. Multiple root traits and productivity were affected. Phosphorus additions increased annual root productivity and root diameter, but decreased root phosphatase activity. Cation additions increased root productivity at certain times of year, also increasing root diameter and mycorrhizal colonisation. P and cation additions increased their element concentrations in root tissues. No responses were detected with N addition. Here we showed that rock-derived nutrients determined root functioning in low-fertility Amazonian soils, demonstrating not only the hypothesised importance of P, but also highlighting the role of cations. The changes in fine root traits and productivity indicated that even slow-growing tropical rainforests can respond rapidly to changes in resource availability.The tree seed mycobiome has received little attention despite its potential role in forest regeneration and health. The aim of the present study was to analyze the processes shaping the composition of seed fungal communities in natural forests as seeds transition from the mother plant to the ground for establishment. We used metabarcoding approaches and confocal microscopy to analyze the fungal communities of seeds collected in the canopy and on the ground in four natural populations of sessile oak (Quercus petraea). Ecological processes shaping the seed mycobiome were inferred using joint species distribution models. Fungi were present in seed internal tissues, including the embryo. The seed mycobiome differed among oak populations and trees within the same population. Its composition was largely influenced by the mother, with weak significant environmental influences. The models also revealed several probable interactions among fungal pathogens and mycoparasites. Our results demonstrate that maternal effects, environmental filtering and biotic interactions all shape the seed mycobiome of sessile oak. They provide a starting point for future research aimed at understanding how maternal genes and environments interact to control the vertical transmission of fungal species that could then influence seed dispersal and germination, and seedling recruitment.
Placental abruption is a serious complication in pregnancy. Its incidence varies across countries, but the information of how placental abruption varies in immigrant populations is limited. The aims of this study were to estimate the incidence of placental abruption in immigrant women compared with non-immigrants by maternal country and region of birth, reason for immigration, and length of residence.
We conducted a nationwide population-based study using data from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway and Statistics Norway (1990-2016). The study sample included 1558174 pregnancies, in which immigrant women accounted for 245887 pregnancies and 1312287 pregnancies were to non-immigrants. selleck chemical Crude and adjusted odds ratios with 95% CI for placental abruption in immigrant women compared with non-immigrants were estimated by logistic regression with robust standard error estimations (accounting for within-mother clustering).
