Second-generation antipsychotics are an important component in the management of psychiatric conditions but their use can also lead to weight gain, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. Thus, this study aimed to assess the magnitude of metabolic syndrome and its predictors among patients who were on second-generation antipsychotic drugs at six psychiatry Hospitals, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2019.

This study was conducted using a Multicenter cross-sectional study design. Medical charts of 510 patients on second-generation antipsychotic drugs who were selected by convenience sampling method and complete patients' charts were included in this study. Data was gathered using a checklist from patients' medical charts. To identify the determinants of metabolic syndrome, a logistic regression model was used.

From a total of 510 patients' Medical charts on the second-generation antipsychotic drugs, 270 (52.9%) of them were females and 240 (47.1%) were males. The magnitude of metabolic syndrome among patients receiving second-generation antipsychotic drugs was found to be 88 (17.8%). Age, education, family history of cardiovascular disease, and type of second-generation antipsychotic drugs are found to be significantly associated factors with metabolic syndrome.

This study aimed at determining the risk of GDM among pregnant women by pre-pregnancy BMI. Five electronic databases including Medline (PubMed), Scopus, Embase, Web of Science and Google Scholar were searched for literature published form 2015 to January 1, 2021. The pooled estimate risk of GDM among pregnant women was 16.8% (95% CI 15.3-18.4). The risk of GDM in underweight/normal group and overweight/obese group were 10.7% (95% CI 9.1-12.4) and 23% (95% CI 20.2-25.9), respectively. Because earlier research showed that inaccuracies were observed in the interpretation and handling of deaths by forensic physicians, peer consultation among forensic physicians was introduced before advice was given to treating physicians calling for advice. In addition, peer consultation was introduced as a means to improve the correctness of conclusions concerning the manner of death when performing external post-mortem examinations.

In the period of November 2017 until April 2018 all reports of external postmortem examinations (n=498) and all telephonic consultations between treating physicians with forensic physicians, concerning postmortem examinations (n=167), were analyzed retrospectively.

Peer consultation among forensic physicians took place in 70% of the 167 telephonic consultations initiated by treating physicians. In 92% of all cases of telephonic consultation, the accurateness of advice to treating physicians was deemed accurate. In 67% (n=498) of all external postmortem examinations in the study period, peer consultation between forensic physicians took place. The conclusion regarding the manner of death after external postmortem examination was accurate in 99% of all cases (n=491 out of 498).

The advices given by forensic physicians to treating physicians have improved after the introduction of peer consultation among forensic physicians. Peer consultation therefore should be recommended as a means for quality assurance.

It is well acknowledged that maggot development is significantly influenced by temperature. Attention has also been paid to the microbial populations of the cadaver, because toxic substances contained in the substrate can influence the microorganisms and affect arthropods growth and development. However, little is known about the influence of antibiotics taken during lifetime of a person on insect development after that persons death. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that the antibiotics ceftriaxone and levofloxacin cause inhibition of growth and delay of pupation of the blow fly Calliphora vomitoria, which would then lead to an incorrect determination of the post-mortem interval in forensic cases. It was found that maggot development was delayed by levofloxacin mixed in minced pork, where a mixture of both antibiotics increased this effect.
