INTRODUCTION National and state-based minimum data sets remain inadequate in providing a complete representation of emergency presentations, especially among paediatric asthma presentations. Thus, the aim of the study was to identify if a deficit exists in current emergency paediatric asthma hospital presentation datasets and how this may inform an understanding of childhood asthma in Victoria Methods This retrospective cross-sectional study examined emergency hospital presentation data between 1 February 2017 and 31 January 2019. All paediatric (0-14 years) emergency asthma presentation data were collected from nine hospitals in south-western Victoria, Australia, using the Rural Acute Hospital Data Register (RAHDaR), which gathers both Victorian Emergency Minimum Dataset (VEMD) data from larger government hospitals, and non-VEMD data from smaller, more rural institutions. RESULTS Of the 854 emergency presentations identified for children with asthma aged 0-14 years, 540 (63.2%) were managed initially at larger government-reporting hospitals. A total of 314 (36.8%) emergency presentations were initially managed at emergency facilities, such as urgent care centres. Overall, it was found that a total 278 (32.5%) of all emergency presentations did not appear in current government datasets. CONCLUSION The RAHDaR database, a complete register of data, captures all emergency presentations in south-western Victoria and highlights as much as a 33% deficit in the data currently available to inform asthma resource initiatives including policy development, funding allocation, prevention and management initiatives in Victoria. More accurate data from sources such as RAHDaR are essential to fill the now-evident data chasm.Staphylococcus argenteus (S. click here argenteus) is a novel species of coagulase-positive staphylococci described in 2015. This species is phenotypically highly similar and genetically closely related to Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Until recently, differentiation was only possible by molecular genetic methods, multilocus sequence typing and whole-genome sequencing, which are not generally used in routine laboratories due to time-consumingness and expensiveness. A major improvement in the identification of S. argenteus is the application of MALDI-TOF MS, if the available updated mass spectrum reference database is used. In the short report, we would like to present the first confirmed S. argenteus strain isolated from a patient in the Czech Republic and probably the first published S. argenteus strain in Central and Eastern Europe.Bioterrorist threats and attacks are still an issue of concern in the world. Biological agents are divided into three categories. The highest priority agents classified in category A pose a massive risk to public health and national security. The society should be prepared for this risk. Health professionals in the Czech Republic should be aware of the diseases caused by category A agents, which are not common in the country. In this context, the project of the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic “Decontamination of the injured persons” has been implemented at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Palacký University, Olomouc. The article provides an overview of selected serious infectious risks and information on the project the aim of which is to create certified methodical procedures and guidelines on situations related to bioterrorism.AIMS To present our experience with pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) at the HIV Center of the Military University Hospital Prague, to characterize a set of PrEP candidates, to assess the efficiency and safety of PrEP and to measure the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the studied cohort. MATERIAL AND METHODS In total, 99 PrEP candidates (98 men who have sex with men and one woman) were monitored during an 18-month period. An initial examination included acquiring a history, performing a physical examination, screening for HIV (serology) and other STDs and performing renal function tests. RESULTS In total, 81 candidates (in the cohort of 99 candidates) received PrEP. During the course of the 18-month period, none of the clients were newly infected with HIV, and no side effects of the provided medication were recorded. A total of 21% of the 99 PrEP candidates were initially tested positive for STDs, including two clients with HIV. A total of 14% of the 81 PrEP clients contracted an STD during the monitoring period. CONCLUSIONS Experience amassed at the HIV Center of the Military University Hospital Prague over an 18-month period documented the demand for PrEP, assessed PrEP efficacy, indicated good tolerance and suggested that PrEP played a role in the decline in the HIV incidence in the Czech Republic. In addition, several new HIV cases and cases of other asymptomatic STDs were also detected. The overview provides basic information on non-thermal plasma, its properties, and methods of its generation. It gives examples of its use in the inactivation of bacteria including biofilms, fungi, and prions. Related applications in human medicine, namely in wound healing, antitumor therapy, dental medicine, and dermatomycosis therapy are also mentioned.AIM To determine clonal characteristics of Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) strains causing invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in the Czech Republic (CR) in 2017. Clonal assignment of strains was performed in the National Reference Laboratory for Streptococcal Infections (NRL) by the routinely used method, multilocus sequence typing (MLST), and a newly introduced method, multiple-locus variable number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA). MATERIAL AND METHOD The study strains were 87 isolates of S. pneumoniae selected from those referred to the NRL within the IPD surveillance programme from all over the CR in 2017. The study set covers S. pneumoniae isolates of both pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine serotypes (1, 4, and 9V) and non-vaccine serotypes (8, 9N, and 22F) widely spread in the CR. The study methods were MLST, the standard method used worldwide for the characterisation of pneumococcal isolates based on sequencing of a set of gene regions, and MLVA, which allows to characterise isolates based on the number of tandem repeats in intergenic regions.
