Degeneration was induced in lumbar discs of ten large frame goats via injection of chondroitinase ABC (ChABC). After 12 weeks, degenerate discs were treated via injection of either hydrogel alone, or hydrogel seeded with allogeneic, bone marrow-derived MSCs. Untreated healthy and degenerate discs served as controls, and animals were euthanized 2 weeks after treatment. Discs exhibited a significant loss of disc height after 12 weeks after degeneration was induced. Two weeks after treatment, discs that received the combined hydrogel and MSC injection exhibit a significant, 10% improvement in disc height index, as well as improvements in histological condition. Discs that were treated with hydrogel alone exhibited reduced TNF-α expression in the nucleus pulposus. Microcomputed tomography imaging revealed that hydrogel remained localized to the central NP region of all treated discs after 2 weeks of unrestricted activity. These encouraging findings motivate further, longer term studies of therapeutic efficacy of hydrogel and MSC injections in this large animal model.This study aimed to assess which combination of subjective and empirical data might help to identify the expertise level. The middle meningeal artery (MMA) may participate in the pathophysiology of CSDHs. The aim of this study was to determine whether CSDHs are associated with large MMAs. Patients referred for CSDH embolization and having undergone a computed tomography angiography (CTA) before embolization were retrospectively included. For each CSDH patient, two age and sex-matched controls with a CTA performed during the study period were selected. Size comparisons of the MMA were performed between MMAs ipsilateral to CSDHs, on the contralateral side and in controls. Comparison was also made with angiographic measurements from CSDH embolization procedures. Seventy-five CSDH patients with available CTAs prior to embolization were enrolled and 146 MMAs were measured. One hundred and fifty controls were included and 288 MMAs were measured. The median diameter of the 94 MMAs ipsilateral to a CSDH (1.5 mm; interquartile range (IQR) [1.3-1.7]) was significantly larger than control MMAs (1.28 mm; IQR [1.15-1.4]) (p 1.7 mm; p=0.01). MMAs ipsilateral to CSDHs appear to be significantly larger as compared to contralateral MMAs and MMAs in a control population, suggesting the involvement of the MMA in the pathophysiology of CSDH.The study presented here analyzes mining accidents and fatal injuries in Serbian underground coal mines over a period of 50 years, in order to assess the effectiveness of legislation changes in the overall safety of work environment. Two distinct periods, prior to 2000 and after 2000 were compared. The data from the period after 2000 were further analyzed to provide better understanding of the results. In order to assess the overall state of safety in Serbian mines, the data on fatal injuries were also compared to the international data. It was found that the legislative changes are more easily accepted by the common workers than by the mine management. Consequently, the key recommendation for the safety of coal mine companies in Serbia is the investment in the new technology. Additionally, mine management should be in the focus of the mining inspection with a stronger penal policy regarding mine safety neglect.Background To quantify the association between effects of interventions on carotid intimamedia thickness (cIMT) progression and their effects on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Methods We systematically collated data from randomized controlled trials. cIMT was assessed as the mean value at the common-carotid-artery; if unavailable, the maximum value at the common-carotid-artery or other cIMT measures were utilized. The primary outcome was a combined CVD endpoint defined as myocardial infarction, stroke, revascularization procedures, or fatal CVD. We estimated intervention effects on cIMT progression and incident CVD for each trial, before relating the two using a Bayesian meta-regression approach. Results We analyzed data of 119 randomized controlled trials involving 100,667 patients (mean age 62 years, 42% female). Over an average follow-up of 3.7 years, 12,038 patients developed the combined CVD endpoint. Across all interventions, each 10 μm/year reduction of cIMT progression resulted in a relative risk for CVD of 0.
