re reduced significantly from baseline (overall -6.6±6.07; smokers -5.17 + 6.96; non-smokers 8.06±4.44; all p<0.0001). The mean difference between the two groups was 2.88 (p<0.0001) at week 24. TFC was well tolerated.
In this real world, multicentre study in India, TFC significantly improved lung function, symptoms and quality of life among all patients with COPD, but the effect was more pronounced among non-smoker COPD patients.

There are no vaccines to prevent the infection and the treatment relies on few drugs that often display high toxicity and costs. Thus, chemotherapeutic alternatives are required. Histone Deacetylases (HDACs) are epigenetic enzymes involved in the control of chromatin structure. In this work, we tested an in-house library of 78 hydroxamic acid derivatives as putative inhibitors of L. braziliensis HDACs (HDACi). read more The compounds were evaluated in relation to the toxicity to the host cell macrophage and to the leishmanicidal effect against L. braziliensis during in vitro infection. Eight HDACi showed significant leishmanicidal effects and the top 5 compounds showed effective concentrations (EC50) in the range of 4.38 to 10.21 μM and selectivity indexes (SI) from of 6 to 21.7. Analyses by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) indicated induction of asis caused by L. braziliensis.Soil contaminated with the production wastewater of 4,4'-diaminostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid is extremely hazardous and difficult to bioremediate. In this study, a cost-effective method was developed to reduce the risk of contaminated soil and produce building materials through a combination of ultrasonic processing and solidification/stabilisation. Ultrasonic processing conditions of 5 min at 40 kHz were found to significantly improve the compressive strength of bricks. The results of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated that the enhanced strength was due to the ultrasonic processing controlling the shape and scale of the crystals and microstructure of the cement paste. Furthermore, the effect of the activating agent, CaO, on the leaching toxicity of the bricks was closely related to the curing temperature. Under natural dry conditions (10-25 °C), the leaching toxicity decreased along with the reduction of CaO. However, under high artificial temperature conditions (40 °C), increasing the CaO was beneficial for decreasing the leaching toxicity. The addition of 2.91% CaO was suitable for improving brick performance under both natural dry (10-25 °C) and artificial temperature curing conditions (40 °C). The results of GC-MS revealed that 64.8% and 66.7% of organic species and organic volume, respectively, were reduced in the leachate of the bricks, which was produced by CaO activation and ultrasonic treatments. It was demonstrated that the optimal combined process for cost-effectively transforming hazardous soil to active building materials is feasible.
Organophosphate pesticides are widely used in agriculture and for other purposes, leading to ubiquitous exposure in human populations. Some studies reported cognitive deficits in children exposed prenatally to organophosphate pesticides, but findings from recent studies were inconsistent. Furthermore, recent biomonitoring studies suggest exposure levels have decreased. Hence, the risks from current prenatal exposure to organophosphate pesticides for child neurodevelopment are uncertain. Furthermore, sex-differences also remain to be better documented in relation to potential neurodevelopmental effects.
To examine the association between prenatal exposure to organophosphate pesticides and IQ scores among boys and girls living in several major Canadian cities.
We used data from the MIREC cohort (Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals). Women were recruited in 2008-2011 from 10 Canadian cities during their first trimester of pregnancy, and urine spot samples were collected for measurement of thate pesticides were not associated with IQ in girls, but we observed that higher maternal urinary DEAPs were associated with poorer Verbal IQ in boys. However, exposure misclassification may be an issue as only one urine sample per woman was analysed. The present study contributes to the accumulating evidence linking exposure to organophosphate pesticides during fetal development with poorer cognitive function in children, bringing data on the risks in a context of low exposure levels encountered in primarily urban populations from Canada.
Telomere length (TL) predicts the onset of cellular senescence and correlates with longevity and age-related disease risk. While telomeres erode throughout life, adults display fixed ranking and tracking of TL, supporting the importance of the early environment in determining inter-individual variability across the life course. Given their guanine-rich structure, telomeres are highly susceptible to oxidative stress (OS). We examined maternal metal exposure, which can induce OS, in relation to newborn TL. We also considered the modifying role of maternal antioxidant intake.
Analyses included 100 mother-newborn pairs enrolled in the Boston and New York City-based PRogramming of Intergenerational Stress Mechanisms (PRISM) pregnancy cohort. We measured As, Ba, Cd, Ni, and Pb in maternal late-pregnancy urine by ICP-MS and quantified relative leukocyte TL (rLTL) in cord blood using qPCR. We used Weighted Quantile Sum (WQS) regression to estimate the metal mixture - rLTL association and conducted repeated holdouon newborn rLTL.
Relative LTL was shorter among newborns of mothers with higher exposure to metals during pregnancy. Higher maternal antioxidant intake may mitigate the negative influence of metals on newborn rLTL.
