Positive peer relationships and student-teacher relationships had a direct effect on decreasing school dropout risk. Peer relationships and student-teacher relationships had a mediating effect on the relationship between school neglect and dropping out of school, but the mediating effect of those factors was significant only at the cross-sectional level.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) remains an ongoing threat to the wellbeing of children who might be victimized, to the liberty of individuals who might engage in abusive behavior, and to the reputations and livelihood of organizations in which abuse might occur. In the U.S., millions of children participate in youth-serving organizations (YSOs), and it is known that a proportion of CSA occurs in these settings. Despite the severity of these threats, there is little knowledge of the steps that organizations take to prevent and respond to CSA.
Our study aimed to index current measures to prevent and respond to CSA in organizational settings, using four of the largest U.S.-based YSOs as exemplars.
In partnership with our partner YSOs, we completed a qualitative analysis of 74 organizational documents including written policies, codes of conduct, trainings, and other documents that formalize these four organizations' current CSA prevention and intervention efforts.
These organizations collectively implement hundreds of distinct measures aimed at preventing, detecting, and responding to CSA. These measures were categorized under eight overarching themes, including overall commitment to child safety, code of conduct, training and education, assessment, implementation and monitoring, screening and hiring, reporting and responding to child sexual abuse, youth problem sexual behavior, and boundaries for teen leaders and young adult staff.
Findings from the current study, outlining key prevention and policy areas undertaken by participating YSOs, offer a starting point for discussion about core elements needed to keep children safe from sexual abuse in YSO settings.

However, there is no consensus on how they can best be used. In the present work we set out to systematically investigate various factors and to formulate guidelines. selleck kinase inhibitor Scanning gradients are used to establish retention models for individual analytes. Different retention models were compared by computing the Akaike information criterion and the prediction accuracy. The measurement uncertainty was found to influence the optimum choice of model. The use of a third parameter to account for non-linear relationships was consistently found not to be statistically significant. The duration (slope) of the scanning gradients was not found to influence the accuracy of prediction. The prediction error may be reduced by repeating scanning experiments or - preferably - by reducing the measurement uncertainty. It is commonly assumed that the gradient-slope factor, i.e. the ratio between slopes of the fastest and the slowest scanning gradients, should be at least three. However, in the present work we found this factor less important than the proximity of the slope of the predicted gradient to that of the scanning gradients. Also, interpolation to a slope between that of the fastest and the slowest scanning gradient is preferable to extrapolation. For comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography (LC × LC) our results suggest that data obtained from fast second-dimension gradients cannot be used to predict retention in much slower first-dimension gradients.
The family Caliciviridae consists of a genetically diverse group of RNA viruses that infect a wide range of host species including noroviruses and sapoviruses which cause acute gastroenteritis in humans. Typing of these viruses relies on sequence-based approaches, and therefore there is a need for rapid and accurate web-based typing tools.
To develop and evaluate a web-based tool for rapid and accurate genotyping of noroviruses and sapoviruses.
The Human Calicivirus Typing (HuCaT) tool uses a set of curated reference sequences that are compared to query sequences using a k-mer (DNA substring) based algorithm. Outputs include alignments and phylogenetic trees of the 12 top matching reference sequences for each query.
The HuCaT tool was validated with a set of 1310 norovirus and 239 sapovirus sequences covering all known human norovirus and sapovirus genotypes. HuCaT tool assigned genotypes to all queries with 100 % accuracy and was much faster (17 s) than BLAST (150 s) or phylogenetic analyses approaches.

Human adenovirus (HAdV) species B, C, and E are commonly associated with acute respiratory illnesses (ARI). We sought to determine the association between HAdV species and ARI severity in children over one respiratory season at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.
We conducted a retrospective cohort study of children with HAdV from a provider-ordered BioFire® FilmArray Respiratory Pathogen Panel 2.0 (RPP) from 05/2018-06/2019. Type-specific PCR assays for HAdV-B3, B7, B11, B14, B16, B21, HAdV-C1, C2, C5, C6, and HAdV-E4 were performed. Demographics, clinical characteristics, and outcome data were compared between HAdV species.
Of 4514 respiratory specimens collected, 2644 (59 %) had at least one pathogen detected by RPP, and 384 (15 %) were HAdV-positive; 342 (89 %) were available for research testing with 306 (89 %) specimens from unique symptomatic individuals; 237 (77 %) were positive for the following species 104 (44 %) HAdV-B, 114 (48 %) HAdV-C, 9 (4%) HAdV-E, and 10 (4%) with co-detection between species.
