In May 2019, the city of Akron in the state of Ohio was admitted into AARP's network of age friendly cities and communities. Akron has a long history of aging services initiative that date back to the 1970s. To provide direction for future aging initiatives, an assessment of Akron's current state was conducted in early 2020. A survey designed to capture information on the eight Age-friendly domains was designed and mailed to 3000 randomized individuals in Akron's ten political wards. A total of 656 individuals responded and returned the survey. Auranofin Akron is rated good to excellent by older Akronites; people want to stay in their neighborhood and in their home. Most Akronites like and use their neighborhood parks, find their streets well-lit, and feel safe walking in their neighborhood. Most respondents rated transportation in Akron as good to very good, but they found sidewalks good to poor. There is a high level of access to social and educational activities and a substantial opportunity to include more people. About two-thirds of respondents participate in faith-based activities, volunteer, and participate in city-sponsored events. Loneliness is not or rarely a problem for three quarters of respondents. Around 56.5% of respondents indicated they disagree they are disconnected from the community. There is high level of access to the Internet and public WiFi in Akron and a substantial opportunity to include more people. Overall, Akron has benefitted from its historical efforts and has the opportunity to impact on more older adults as the older population grows. In the present study, we assessed the extraction of low molecular weight soluble polysaccharides (MESP) from soybean by-products using microwave-assisted enzymatic technology and proposed the chemical structure of MESP using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, gas chromatography, and 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum analysis. The results suggested that MESP mainly comprised arabinose, rhamnose, and glucuronic acid with (1→4) glycosidic linkages in the backbone. Compared with inulin, MESP was found to selectively stimulate the growth of Lactobacillus probiotics. Moreover, the results of in vitro fermentation indicated that MESP significantly increased the concentrations of both acetate and butyrate (p less then 0.05). MESP were treated on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells to determine the anti-inflammatory effect in vitro. It was observed that MESP inhibited nitric oxide, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and IL-10 production. Furthermore, Western blotting results indicated that MESP significantly attenuated LPS-induced downregulation of phosphorylation levels of Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) in macrophages. The underlying mechanism might involve inhibition of the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, presumably via JAK2/STAT3 pathway. Collectively, the results of our study paved way for the production of MESP, which may be potentially used as nutraceutical ingredients for prebiotics and anti-inflammatory agents, from soybean residue.Inorganic phosphate (Pi) is an essential nutrient for the maintenance of cells. In healthy mammals, extracellular Pi is maintained within a narrow concentration range of 0.70 to 1.55 mM. Mammalian cells depend on Na+/Pi cotransporters for Pi absorption, which have been well studied. However, a new type of sodium-independent Pi transporter has been identified. This transporter assists in the absorption of Pi by intestinal cells and renal proximal tubule cells and in the reabsorption of Pi by osteoclasts and capillaries of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Hyperphosphatemia is a risk factor for mineral deposition, the development of diseases such as osteoarthritis, and vascular calcifications (VCs). Na+-independent Pi transporters have been identified and biochemically characterized in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), chondrocytes, and matrix vesicles, and their involvement in mineral deposition in the extracellular microenvironment has been suggested. According to the growth rate hypothesis, cancer cells require more phosphate than healthy cells due to their rapid growth rates. Recently, it was demonstrated that breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231) respond to high Pi concentration (2 mM) by decreasing Na+-dependent Pi transport activity concomitant with an increase in Na+-independent (H+-dependent) Pi transport. This Pi H+-dependent transport has a fundamental role in the proliferation and migratory capacity of MDA-MB-231 cells. The purpose of this review is to discuss experimental findings regarding Na+-independent inorganic phosphate transporters and summarize their roles in Pi homeostasis, cancers and other diseases, such as osteoarthritis, and in processes such as VC.This work presents lightweight epoxy foams loaded with very low weight percentages (≤0.5 wt.%) of carbon fibers (CFs) with different lengths (3 mm, 6 mm, and 12 mm) as broadband microwave absorbing materials for anechoic chamber application. The effect of CF length on microwave absorption, especially on the absorption frequency band, is investigated for frequencies between 1 and 15 GHz. For the elaboration of composites, three different methods-spatula, shear mixing, and ultrasounds-are used for the dispersion of CFs. The observation of these CFs, after the dispersion step, shows a high fiber breakage rate when shear mixing is used, unlike when spatula or ultrasounds methods are used. On the other hand, the characterization of the elaborated composites highlights a correlation between the mixing methods, hence the fiber brakeage, and the measured reflection coefficient (reflection loss) of the composites. As a result, the minimum value of the reflection coefficient is shifted toward the high frequencies when ially at the low frequency band. The simulated reflection coefficient of this absorber is less than -12 dB in all the studied frequency range, and less than -40 dB for frequencies higher than 3 GHz. This result confirms the interest of using a mix of carbon fiber lengths to achieve a broadband microwave absorber.
