Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection explains how animals that are better equipped to adapt biologically to a changing environment survive over time and those that don't disappear. This process of evolution in biology is the basis of science.

What is Evolution?

The term "evolution" can have many nonscientific meanings. For instance "progress" or "descent with modification." It is scientifically based and is used to describe the process of change of characteristics over time in organisms or species. This change is based in biological terms on natural drift and selection.

Evolution is an important principle in the field of biology today. It is an accepted theory that has stood the test of time and a multitude of scientific experiments. In contrast to other theories in science like the Copernican theory or the germ theory of disease, evolution does not address questions of religion or the existence of God.

Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean-Baptiste Lamarck believed that certain physical characteristics were predetermined to evolve in a stepped-like manner over time. They referred to this as the "Ladder of Nature" or the scala naturae. Charles Lyell first used this term in 1833 in his Principles of Geology.

In the early 1800s, Darwin formulated his theory of evolution and published it in his book On the Origin of Species. It states that all species of organisms have a common ancestry, which can be determined through fossils and other lines of evidence. This is the current perspective of evolution, which is supported in many areas of science, including molecular biology.

While scientists do not know exactly how organisms developed, they are confident that the evolution of life on earth is a result of natural selection and genetic drift. Individuals with advantageous traits are more likely to survive and reproduce, and these individuals transmit their genes to the next generation. As time passes, this results in gradual changes in the gene pool which gradually lead to new species and forms.

Some scientists employ the term evolution in reference to large-scale changes, such the evolution of one species from an ancestral one. Other scientists, like population geneticists, define evolution more broadly by referring to an overall change in allele frequencies over generations. Both definitions are acceptable and accurate however some scientists believe that the definition of allele frequency is lacking essential aspects of the evolution process.

Origins of Life

A key step in evolution is the emergence of life. The emergence of life happens when living systems begin to evolve at a micro scale, for instance within cells.

The origin of life is an important topic in a variety of areas that include biology and chemical. The question of how living things started is a major topic in science since it poses a major challenge to the theory of evolution. It is often referred to as "the mystery of life," or "abiogenesis."
