The number of non-pharmacological trials is greater than the number of unique pharmacological trials (Figure 2A). However most of these trials are in the exploratory phase and only a handful of them have been able to successfully progress to the pivotal stage.
It is unclear if the medications currently available for ADHD are effective for the general population. Most clinical trials exclude adults who suffer from a psychopathology that is comorbid. This may affect the validity of these studies and hinder them from accurately identifying the most effective treatment options for adults with ADHD.
The typical exclusion criteria for ADHD clinical trials excludes adults with the most severe psychiatric problems and those most at risk of functional impairment. These adults were likely to have more comorbid psychopathologies in comparison to the ADHD community sample groups that were examined in this study, but they were not eligible to take part in the clinical trials.
Since 2009, the number of clinical trials that utilize medical devices to treat adults with ADHD has increased. This trend continues to grow, even though most of the trials are in the exploratory phase and haven't yet reached the pivotal stage. The increase in trials for this treatment could be a reflection on the increasing interest in these medical devices as a method of treatment for adults with ADHD.
