How to Choose the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaner
A robot vacuum will save you a lot of time and effort in the case of regular touch-ups. The best models are capable of picking up dust, light debris and cords.
The higher-end models even sweep your floors, but they can't climb the stairs. Look for models that have smart mapping, real-time safety features, and large self-emptying bins.
Best Overall
The best robots in our testing are efficient, easy to use, and able to keep up with everyday debris. You'll need a model with decent carpet-picking capability and the ability to take on stairs. And, if you're looking to add more features, you might be interested in a model equipped with smart mapping technology or an app that lets you control the robot remotely.
Camryn Rabideau, a contributing shopping writer for PEOPLE and a reviewer of products who has tested several robotic vacuums, has been credited with testing hundreds of robot vacuums. She's a fan of the robotic vacuums that offer the greatest convenience, such as self-emptying dustbins and charging docks that automatically empty and fill water tanks for mopping robots. She also likes the robots that are able to recognize landmarks like furniture legs and power cords to ensure they don't get tripped up when climbing steps.
Compared with the top-rated models this Black and Decker vacuum isn't as advanced in its object-avoidance capabilities and its navigation score is lower. It comes with a large non-refillable dustbin as well as a long battery. It also comes with a feature which allows you to schedule cleaning sessions and return to where it was last. This makes it easier for you to take care of larger areas. This model is an excellent option for pet owners, as it can avoid the tangles of fur and food particles.
In our tests, we discovered that the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra combined with a LIDAR (light) sensor which can identify rooms and obstacles using a structured-light sensor that can detect objects and detect edges. It can avoid liquid droplets, stairs, and furniture legs with this combination. It also has the ability to save up to four floor plans to be used in the future. It is able to stop and restart cleaning at any time, meaning that you can continue with your chores while it works. The app provides a 3D view of your home with room labels as well as advanced cleaning options.
Although this robot isn't able to clean as well as our top-rated models, it excels in picking up fine debris such as baking soda and sand and heavier items, such as orzo pasta and metal screws. Its only downsides are that it isn't able to mop and that its navigation system is less impressive.
Best for Carpet
If you have carpeting in your home, search for a robot vacuum with excellent pickup and good maneuverability scores on carpets and rug. A lot of models do a great job of removing dust that is embedded in carpets with low pile and a few do a good job of cleaning up larger debris such as orzo pasta, metal screws and pet hair. They don't pick-up fine particles like an upright canister, and could be unable to pick up dirt close to baseboards or thresholds.
For homes with carpets, a 2-in-1 robotic vacuum/mop is the best choice. You can exchange an empty bin to a damp mopping mat. The Roborock Q Revo is a 2-in-1 robot vacuum and mop that can clean and mop at the same time with circular pads that spin at 200 rpm. It recognizes and raises its pads when it comes in contact with carpets, preventing the flooring from getting wet. It is not necessary to take them off or replace them every time. The Q Revo also performs better than other robot vacuums/mops when it comes to keeping away from obstacles and getting close to rugs and thresholds.
Another option that is worth considering is the iRobot Roomba Combo i5, which performed very well in our tests and can be scheduled through the app to clean your home when you're away from home. It can be set to mop only and we were impressed by its impressive navigation on both rug and floor surfaces and its ability to go up and over furniture. The Combo i5 also has a very long runtime and a great path-planning feature for a device of this size.
If you're looking for a high-tech model, consider the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Self-Empty Robot Vacuum & Mop. It has a large dock that can last for weeks without needing to be empty. It also has amazing capability to auto-empty carpets and bare floors. robot floor cleaner 's also got an intelligent mapping system that can be programmed to only be operational during certain times of the day (a useful feature to keep children and pets who are prone to mischief from causing havoc). The Shark is less powerful than other mop/robot combinations however it does pick hair and pet hair with a high degree of accuracy. It's also the best value of our top choices.
The best choice for hardwood floors
Robot vacuums are ideal for hardwood floors, as they can maneuver through obstacles with ease without causing damage the surfaces that are not. They are capable of removing dust and crumbs, but they struggle with pet hair and other larger particles. They lack the suction power of the top canister or upright vacuum, which makes them unsuitable for deep cleaning carpeted or upholstery areas.
The most effective robots are those that are two-in-one, which combine the power of a mop with a vacuum to complete the task in one step. If you have floors that are mixed choose one equipped with an onboard sensor that detects changes in the floor's texture and adjusts suction accordingly. This feature is available on the ECOVACS Deebot T9+ and allows it to effortlessly transition from hard carpeting to soft carpeting.
If you have lots of hardwood flooring in your home you might want to consider a robot mop and vacuum like the Eufy S1 Pro. This model is a powerful robotic vacuum equipped with smart navigation that can clean hardwood floors and other surfaces. It can also mop. Its sensors help it avoid stairs and other hazards so you don't have to be worried about the bot plummeting down the stairs and damaging your hardwood.
When it comes to mop pads the eufy S1 Pro is designed to actually wash hardwood floors with downward pressure, rather than wipe them to remove dirt and dust. Its pads that can be reused reduce waste and spread fewer germs. They can also be cleaned in docking stations to reduce time. The mop pads can also be dried, washed, and used again.
Both the robovac as well as the mop are both controlled by your smartphone, making it easier to manage the device. For instance, you can, use the app to create zones where the vacuum cannot be allowed to enter, label different rooms and schedule specific cleaning times. The eufy S1 Pro also has an auto-emptying dock that sucks debris through a trapdoor and puts it in a bagless or disposable bin, so you don't need to manually empty the bin every time as you would with other models.
Ideal for small Spaces
As the name implies that these robots are suited for small spaces. They have smaller bins that contain less garbage, and are more efficient than larger models when it comes to navigating tight corners. They can also be placed under furniture that larger robots aren't able to reach. They tend to be cheaper than the more expensive models, too, although you'll need to manually empty their dirt storage compartments at the end of each cleaning session.
A few years back robotic vacuums experienced significant changes. Manufacturers started adding sensors that could help them avoid household items that their traditional sensors might get stuck on or run across. These improvements reduced the number times that our testers were required to clean up after a robot incident.
However, the new sensors haven't resolved all of these machines' problems. The cheapest models are still struggling with the same challenges that the older ones did and, in addition, they require a certain amount light to see where they're going. Consider getting one that has a spinning LIDAR device mounted on top to create maps of the space. Our best overall pick and runner-up models use this. This allows them to work in the dark and avoid obstacles such as stairs.
In addition to being capable of working in the dark and in the dark, these models can be configured to use their cliff sensors only when they're close to or on the floor, not above them. It is still recommended to cover any mirrors that could interfere with this function though, as the laser used by a laser-based model can bounce off reflective surfaces and cause the robot to believe it is in another room.
Some of the models we recommend also allow you to set up virtual no-go zones for areas you don't want the robot to move, which is beneficial if you have small pets or children. These features aren't on all models we test. Read our full reviews before deciding.
