New York Driver's License Classifications
If you're a novice driver or an experienced one, it's important to understand the different classes of licenses. These classes define the limitations and responsibilities that come with driving.

What is a driving permit?
A driver's license is an official document that is issued by a government agency. It certifies the bearer’s identity and grants them legal permission to drive on roads that are public. It usually shows the driver's name, date and place of birth, photo and address. The majority of states also require drivers to take an exam written to demonstrate their understanding of the driving rules and regulations. Driver's licenses are also used as a proof of identity when traveling abroad, and the number on the back is typically used for identification purposes by banks and other public authorities.
In the United States, driver's licenses are issued by a state's department for motor vehicles (DMV). They can be valid for a period of years based on the type of license and driver's age. In addition to the photo and other personal information, most driver's licences include an alphanumeric number that is issued by the agency that issued it to the bearer. Some states have included a barcode to their driver's licences to make electronic records easier.
New York has a number of different license classes, tailored to suit driving needs and vehicle types. As someone who has helped a lot of New Yorkers obtain their licenses, I can tell you that understanding these distinctions is crucial whether you're looking to cruise down Broadway in the back of a car or drive a big rig through the Adirondacks.
New drivers who are starting an initial license class have to first apply for a learner's permit, which is valid for 6 months and legally certifies them as learners. During this time they must be by a licensed driver who can instruct them on the rules. After completing 50 hours of practice and 10 at night, they are able to advance to an ordinary Class D license.
For those who frequently travel into Canada or Mexico An enhanced Driver's License (EDL) may be a good alternative. This is a WHTI-compliant ID that can be used at both land and ports of entry at sea to establish US citizenship in addition to driving privileges. EDLs are only offered to those who possess an active driver's license and a passport or naturalization certificate that can prove their US citizenship.
How do I obtain a driver's license?
A New York State driver's permit is a document which allows you to drive a motor vehicle. The privilege comes with a variety of limitations that drivers must follow to stay safe while driving. Before you can get your license, you'll have to pass a written exam that is based on the guidelines in the New York Driver's Manual. The DMV examiner is likely to ask you questions regarding road safety and traffic rules. You will also have to pass a visual test. You may have passed this test in high school, where you sat with your eyes closed and read random letters for a few seconds. You must have vision of 20/40 or better, with or without glasses.
You'll also have to show proof of identity and residency. This is usually done by bringing in a valid form of identification, such as a passport, state ID card, or military ID. You will also be required to bring documents that verify your current address. This includes bank statements, pay stubs and lease agreements. The DMV provides an online tool that can assist you in determining which documents you need to bring.

To get this done, your out-of state license must bear your photo, be valid or have expired less than 24 months prior to the date of your application for a New York Driver's License. You will also need to bring 6 points worth of documentation to verify your identity and the date of birth. The DMV has a tool online which will assist you in determining the acceptable documents.
Anyone who does not have an American passport must make an appointment in person at their local DMV office to enable them to provide evidence of legal status and additional documentation. They will also be subjected to additional testing and restrictions on their ability drive.
