The use of concurrent medications is necessary in trials of treatment of canine atopic dermatitis. Our aim was to use the best available evidence to construct and then to validate a medication score (MS) formula that will estimate the impact of concurrent medications on trial outcomes.

Trials of 15 interventions were scrutinized to find those that were consistent in terms of specific medication, administration route and dosage regimen. A MS was constructed in five steps, starting from assigning a score of 1 for each day on oral prednisone, prednisolone or methylprednisolone at 0.5-1.0 mg/kg. The MS score was validated using the clinical records of 35 dogs with atopic dermatitis that had been treated for a period of 12 ± 2 weeks with six of these medications and compared with a previously published non-validated MS.

A MS could be assigned to eight treatments, six of which had been administered to the 35 dogs. A positive correlation was seen with the previously published MS and a negative correlation with changes in lesional and pruritus scores.

This MS may be a useful tool in new studies evaluating the efficacy of treatments in canine atopic dermatitis.

Nematodirus battus infection is a major health concern in lambs. Development and hatch of infective larvae on pastures is temperature dependent, making model-based risk forecasting a useful tool for disease control.

Air and 30 cm soil temperature-based risk models were used to predict hatch dates using meteorological data from 2019 and compared to infection dates, estimated from the first appearance of N. battus eggs, on 18 sheep farms distributed across Great Britain.

The air temperature model was more accurate in its predictions than the soil temperature model on 12 of the 18 farms, but tended to predict late hatch dates in the early part of the season.

Overall, the air temperature model appears the more appropriate choice for predicting N. battus peak hatch in the UK in terms of accuracy and practicality, but some adjustment might be needed to account for microclimatic variations at the soil-air interface.

Beyond that barrier, the concept of peroral targeting has not been clarified. Nevertheless, this is possible as long as drug carriers are able to be absorbed into the systemic circulation intact. Recent findings on in vivo translocation of drug micro or nanocarriers shed light on potential peroral targeting to remote sites beyond the GIT. Sequential processes of penetration across the enteric epithelia, transportation via the lymphatics and ultimate convergence with the systemic circulation are involved in the underlying mechanisms. The microfold cell (M cell) pathway plays a leading role in breaking through the enteric epithelial barrier. Accumulating evidence confirms primary targeting of a series of lipid and polymeric micro or nanocarriers to organs and tissues of the mononuclear phagocyte systems (MPS), such as the liver, spleen, lungs and kidneys. The total amount of lymph-bound particles could reach 8%, as evidenced by quantification of glucan microparticles that specifically bind M cell. Migration or translocation of micro or nanocarrier-bearing macrophages attains secondary targeting of the engulfed micro or nanocarriers to distant sites far beyond the MPS. The current findings foresee a probability of targeting to sites beyond the GIT. However, the content of exposure of micro or nanocarriers at target sites and potential therapeutic or diagnostic promises are yet to be unraveled.
Alcohol consumption is influenced by the characteristics of drinking occasions, for example, location, timing, or the composition of the drinking group. However, the relative importance of occasion characteristics is not yet well understood. This study aims to identify which characteristics, and combinations of characteristics, are associated with units consumed within drinking occasions. It also tests whether accounting for occasion characteristics improves the prediction of consumption compared to using demographic information only.

The data come from a cross-sectional, nationally representative, online market research survey. Our sample includes 18,409 British drinkers aged 18+who recorded the characteristics of 46,072 drinking occasions using 7-day retrospective drinking diaries in 2018. We used decision tree modeling and nested linear regression to predict units consumed in occasions using information on drinking location/venue, occasion timing, company, occasion type (e.g., a quiet night in), occasie of alcohol consumption in adults' drinking occasions. Accounting for characteristics of drinking occasions, both individually and in combination, substantially improves the prediction of alcohol consumption.
Combinations of occasion duration and drink type are strongly predictive of alcohol consumption in adults' drinking occasions. Accounting for characteristics of drinking occasions, both individually and in combination, substantially improves the prediction of alcohol consumption.
