Up until recently the Korean scientific community avoided working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credibility. Silence is no longer a viable option.

What is Evolution?

Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species transformed into other species in a certain way. The term"transmutation" was coined by the Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 challenged this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that existing species change into other species in a gradual and predictable way.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process through which living things develop characteristics to improve their chances of surviving or conceiving offspring. In time, genetic variation can cause a population to acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the process that drives the most evolutionary changes. This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of species created." The theory says that God creates the original species and then allows these to evolve over time. Eventually the evolutionary changes produce new species that are identical to the original species.

Other creationists believe that God created the universe and all living things during a single event, referred to as the Great Flood. They believe that the first species were created simultaneously, and that they evolved slowly afterwards. In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. This is supported by a myriad of professional associations, including the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Certain scientists and educational institutions are however more flexible and allow creationism and evolution to be incorporated into their curriculum.

What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of high-school textbooks announced recently that they would eliminate references to evolution in their editions. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) has been the driving force behind this drive. STR has achieved its first victory in taking away examples of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. Its sights are now set on the removal of excerpts from Darwin's infamous finch research and on human evolution too.

STR claims that it has the support of around 4000 families and individuals. Its goal is to weed out what it believes is the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of biology students teachers revealed that around half do not believe in evolution. The reasons aren't certain, but could be related to religion or the absence of creation scientists in the country.

The KACR has achieved a number of things through its seminars and lectures. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and the book. One of these was a textbook on natural science with a cosmological perspective. This sparked an interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university and it is taught until today.

On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six foreign lecturers, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin addressed a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR and its members have given lectures on creation science in major seminaries, too. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
