Changes in the four drivers were reflected by the load-runoff (L-Q) relationships for each of the three subperiods within each of the five headwater catchments. The five catchments experienced large but catchment-specific downward shifts in the L-Q relationship attributable to changes in land use and agricultural management within the catchments. The documented large downward shifts in NO3- loads demonstrated for the five catchments (30-52%) as a consequence of mandatory regulation over a period of nearly three decades are a unique example of how agriculture can reduce its environmental impact.Earthworms play an important role in the organic matter decomposition in terrestrial ecosystems. Earthworms interact directly with the microorganisms to affect the organic matter decomposition via gut transit, i.e., the digestion and assimilation of organic matter in the foregut and midgut and its excretion by the hindgut. However, how the microbial community ingested by earthworms respond to the transit processes in different gut segments of earthworms is not clear. We used composted cow manure to feed earthworms and sampled vermicompost and the contents of foregut, midgut and hindgut for bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis. We observed that earthworm gut transit decreased the abundances of the dominant phyla Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes but increased Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi and Acidobacteria. The alpha diversity of bacterial community in midgut was the lowest of the different gut segments, and the bacterial community structure of the foregut was significantly different from the midgut and hi regulating organic matter dynamics in terrestrial ecosystems.Cumulative impact assessments can inform ecosystem-based management by mapping human pressures and assessing their intensity on ecosystem components. However, its use to inform local management is scarce, largely due to the need for fine-grained spatial data representing ecosystem threats that can assess impacts at a local scale. Here, we applied the cumulative impact assessment framework to Moorea's coral reef, French Polynesia to inform the ongoing revision of the island-wide marine spatial management plan. We combined high spatial resolution data on 11 local anthropogenic pressures and four ecological components with expert vulnerability assessments. Results revealed that the entire reef is impacted by at least four pressures coral reef fisheries, agriculture, land use change and urbanization. These activities together contribute to 87% of the overall cumulative impact. Most importantly, land-based activities contribute to more than half (52%) of the overall impact. selleck kinase inhibitor Other high-impact activities, such as reef-based tourism, remain very localized and contribute little to the overall human impact. These findings show that by focusing solely on reef-based activities, the current management plan misses critical sources of impact. Not considering land-based activities in the management may lead to decisions that could fail to significantly lower cumulative human impact on the reef. This study demonstrates how operationalizing the cumulative human impact framework at a local scale can help managers identify key leverage points likely to yield improved ecological outcomes. The populous Pearl River Delta (PRD) region in China suffers from serious air arsenic (As) pollution. The objective of this study was to explore the pollution situation of atmospheric arsenic deposition in the PRD region, and to evaluate the associated multimedia daily intake in children. The average deposition flux was 3921.7 μg/m2/year during the 2016-2017, and the pollution situation was even worse than that in 2015. A continuously increasing trend of arsenic atmospheric deposition was found. The bioaccessibility of As in the settled dust was determined as about 22% by a physiologically based extraction test (PBET). After corrected with the bioaccessibilities of As in the settled dust and food items, the geometry means (GM) value of daily uptake through multimedia ingestion of produce (dust and diet) originated from arsenic atmospheric deposition was 0.23 μg/kg/day for 1- to 6-year-old children. The contribution of the non-dietary oral exposure (settled dust) was negligible and just accounted for only 0.01% of the daily uptake. This estimated value was much lower than those in the literatures, in which the bioaccessibility of As was not taken into account, concluding that the role of the settled dust in the total daily intake may have been overestimated previously. Milk, eggs and freshwater fish were the dominant pathways for children to intake the products derived from atmospheric arsenic deposition. There still be a concern about the high non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk by long-term multimedia ingestion. Special care should be considered toward the emission sources of air arsenic, including the coal combustion from industries and construction dust, etc., to reduce the negative effect of air arsenic in children.Phenolic environmental estrogens (PEEs) are ubiquitous in most rivers worldwide and may cause potential endocrine-disrupting effects in aquatic organisms. Three typical PEEs (bisphenol A, BPA; 4-tert-octylphenol,4-t-OP; and nonylphenol, NP) were investigated in the rivers of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration, which is the most urbanized and industrialized area in North China. The target PEEs were detected in 100% of river water samples, and the concentrations ranged from 23 to 255 ng L-1. The concentrations of NP in most river sections were higher than those of BPA and 4-t-OP. The spatiotemporal variations in PEEs indicated that both domestic and industrial wastewater were main sources of PEEs in river water. In addition, rainfall runoff might be an important source of PEEs in the receiving waters, especially in the wet season. The ecotoxicological risk assessment of individual PEE revealed a moderate to high risk for aquatic organisms at most sampling sites. The mixture risk prediction based on the concentration addition method indicated a potential cumulative risk of PEEs in the study area, highlighting the importance of mixture risk assessment in the aquatic environment.
