Faktor yang mempengaruhi pertumbuhan bayi, yaitu:
1. Faktor Genetik
Faktor genetik merupakan modal dasar dalam mencapai hasil akhir proses tumbuh kembang anak. Yang termasuk faktor internal (genetik) adalah faktor bawaan yang normal dan patologis, jenis kelamin, obstetrik dan ras atau suku bangsa.
2. Faktor Lingkungan
Faktor lingkungan adalah faktor yang sangat menentukan tercapainya potensi genetik yang optimal. Ada dua jenis, yaitu :
a. Faktor yang mempengaruhi anak pada waktu masih di dalam kandungan (faktor pranatal)
b. Faktor lingkungan yang mempengaruhi tumbuh kembang anak setelah lahir (faktor postnatal)
3. Faktor Lingkungan Pranatal
Faktor lingkungan pranatal adalah faktor lingkungan yang mempengaruhi anak pada waktu masih dalam kandungan.
a. Mekanis, trauma dan cairan ketuban yang kurang akan menyebabkan kelainan bawaan pada bayi yang dilahirkan.
b. Gizi pada waktu hamil.
c. Toksin / zat kimia, ibu hamil yang perokok berat atau peminum alkohol.
d. Endokrin, hormon yang sangat berperan pada pertumbuhan janin, misalnya somatomamotropin, hormon plasenta, tiroid dan insulin.
e. Radiasi, pada janin usia sebelum kehamilan 18 minggu dapat menyebabkan kerusakan otak dan cacat bawaan.
f. Infeksi intrauterin, infeksi ini yang sering menyebabkan cacat bawaan adalah TORCH (toxoplasmosis, rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex).
g. Stress, stres yang dialami ibu pada waktu hamil dapat mempengaruhi tumbuh kembang janin, antara lain cacat bawaan, kelainan kejiwaan.
h. Anoksia embrio, menurunnya oksigenasi janin melalui gangguan pada plasenta atau talpus.
