Reaching the recommendation on physical activity (PA) for health is highly important to effectively manage blood glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). The aims of this study were to assess the level and pattern of PA among T2D outpatients and to relate PA levels to glucose control. A cross-sectional study was conducted in outpatient clinics in Hanoi, Vietnam. PA levels were reported using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) version 2.0. Participants meeting the WHO recommendations on PA for health or not were respectively categorized as "sufficiently active" and "insufficiently active". FPG less then 7.2 mmol/L was defined as controlled plasma glucose. In total, 407 participants with T2D (55% women, mean (SD) age 61.6 (9.7) years) were included. The fraction of T2D outpatients reporting as insufficiently active was 21%. The lowest amount of energy expenditure was from transport activities (travel from and to places). On multivariate logistic regression, being sufficiently active was associated with a two-fold increased likelihood of having better glycemic control. see more The findings warrant action plans to increase physical activity in general and in specific active transport for T2D patients in Vietnam.Patient Activation Measure-13 (PAM-13) is a valid and widely used questionnaire that assess an individual's knowledge, confidence, and skills for self-management of their chronic illness. Although there is some evidence regarding its reliability, the test-retest reliability has not been investigated among patients with substance use disorders (SUDs) or schizophrenia spectrum disorders. We investigated the internal consistency and test-retest reliability of PAM-13 in these populations. Test-retest reliability was analysed using data from 29 patients with SUDs and 28 with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Cronbach's α and Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) scores were used to examine internal consistency and test-retest reliability, respectively. Of the 60 collected test-retest questionnaires, 57 were included in the analyses. No mean differences between time one (T1) and time two (T2) were observed in either patient group, except for item 12 in schizophrenia spectrum disorders patients (p less then 0.05). Internal consistency for T1 and T2 was 0.75 and 0.84 in SUDs patients and 0.87 and 0.81 in schizophrenia spectrum disorders patients, respectively. The ICC was r = 0.86 in patients with SUDs and r = 0.93 in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. To conclude, PAM-13 showed good internal consistency and test-retest reliability in SUDs and schizophrenia spectrum disorders patients. This Special Issue of Foods, The Effect of Novel Packaging Technology on Food Safety and Quality, contains seven papers that were refereed and selected in accordance with the usual editorial standards of the journal [...].Cosmos caudatus (CC) contains high flavonoids and might be beneficial in neuroprotection. It has the potential to prevent neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effects of 12 weeks of Cosmos caudatus supplement on cognitive function, mood status, blood biochemical profiles and biomarkers among older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) through a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The subjects were randomized into CC supplement (n = 24) and placebo group (n = 24). Each of them consumed one capsule of CC supplement (250 mg of CC/capsule) or placebo (500 mg maltodextrin/capsule) twice daily for 12 weeks. Cognitive function and mood status were assessed at baseline, 6th week, and 12th week using validated neuropsychological tests. Blood biochemical profiles and biomarkers were measured at baseline and 12th week. Two-way mixed analysis of variance (ANOVA) analysis showed significant improvements in mini mental state examination (MMSE) (partial η2 = 0.150, p = 0.049), tension (partial η2 = 0.191, p = 0.018), total mood disturbance (partial η2 = 0.171, p = 0.028) and malondialdehyde (MDA) (partial η2 = 0.097, p = 0.047) following CC supplementation. In conclusion, 12 weeks CC supplementation potentially improved global cognition, tension, total mood disturbance, and oxidative stress among older adults with MCI. Larger sample size and longer period of intervention with incorporation of metabolomic approach should be conducted to further investigate the underlying mechanism of CC supplementation in neuroprotection.A steady and proper thermal environment in deep underground is imperative to ensure worker health and production safety. Understanding the thermal performance in the roadway is the premise of temperature prediction; ventilation design; and improvement in cooling efficiency. A full coupled model incorporated with a moving mesh method was adopted; reflecting the dynamic condition of roadway construction. This study revealed the characteristics of the thermal performance and its evolution law in an excavating roadway. Several scenarios were performed to examine the designs of the auxiliary ventilation system on thermal performance in the roadway. The results show that there is a limitation in the cooling effect by continuously increasing the ventilation volume. Reducing the diameter of the air duct or distances between the duct outlet and the working face will aggravate the heat hazard in the roadway. The heat release from the roadway wall increases with the increase of the advance rate of the working face or roadway section size. Furthermore; an orthogonal experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of major factors on the average air temperature and local heat accumulation in the roadway. In fish processing, a great amount of side streams, including skin, bones, heads and viscera, is wasted or downgraded as feed on a daily basis. These side streams are rich sources of bioactive nitrogenous compounds and protein, which can be converted into peptides through enzymatic hydrolysis as well as bacterial fermentation. Peptides are short or long chains of amino acids differing in structure and molecular weight. They can be considered as biologically active as they can contribute to physiological functions in organisms with applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries. In the food industry, such bioactive peptides can be used as preservatives or antioxidants to prevent food spoilage. Furthermore, peptides contain several functional qualities that can be exploited as tools in modifying food ingredient solubility, water-holding and fat-binding capacity and gel formation. In the pharmaceutical industry, peptides can be used as antioxidants, but also as antihypertensive, anticoagulant and immunomodulatory compounds, amongst other functions.
