Evolution Korea
Korean scientists don't take any chances in the debate over evolution. The Society for Textbook Revise (STR) has been fighting to get the Archaeopteryx and horses removed from textbooks, claiming they are typical icons of evolutionism.
Confucian practices that emphasize global success and the value of education, still dominate the culture of the country. However, Korea is seeking an alternative model of development.
Origins
The development of Iron Age culture brought more sophisticated states like Goguryeo Baekje and Silla to the Korean peninsula. They all developed a distinct culture which blended with the influence of their powerful neighbours and they also adopted aspects of Chinese culture, including Confucianism and Buddhism however shamanism continued to be practised too.
Goguryeo, the first of the Korean kingdoms was the first kingdom to establish their own form of government. It consolidated its authority in the late 1st century and established a king-centered rule system in the 2nd century. It expanded its territory into Manchuria and the north of the Peninsula through several conflicts that drove the Han loyalists from the region.
It was during this time that a regional confederation emerged named Buyeo. Its founder Wang Geon was given the title king and his name was written down in the 13th-century Samguk yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms). Buyeo was then referred to as Goryeo and that is the reason why the name Korea was created. Goryeo was a thriving commercial state and also a place of learning. Its people cultivated crops and raised livestock such as sheep and goats, and they created furs out of them too. They wrote poetry and dance-dramas with masks such as tallori and sandaenori and they held a festival every year called Yeonggo in December.
The economy of Goryeo was stimulated by the booming trade with other countries which included the Song Dynasty of China. Byeongnando was the gateway to Gaeseong which was the capital of Gaeseong. Traders came from Central Asia, Arabia and Southeast Asia. Silk and medicinal herbs were among the items they brought.
Around around 8,000 BCE, the Koreans began to establish permanent settlements and began to cultivate cereal crops. They also developed pottery and polished stone tools and started organising themselves into clan societies. The Neolithic Age continued until the 12th century BC. At this time, Gija, a Shang dynasty prince from China, is said to have introduced high-culture to Korea. Many Koreans believed, until the 20th century that Gija and Dangun gave Korea their people and their basic culture.
Functions
Korea's old development model, which emphasized the role of state-led capital accumulation as well as government intervention in industry and business, contributed to rapid economic growth, which took it from one of the world's poorest nations to the ranks of OECD countries within three decades. A major finding is that several emerging trends are altering the nature of power in Korea and it is these developments that will determine the direction of the future of the country. For instance, despite fact that participation in politics is still extremely restricted in Korea new methods of political activism bypass and challenge the power of political parties, thus transforming democratic system in the country.
Another important fact is that the influence and power of the Korean elite has waned. A large segment of the society feels disconnected from the ruling class. This is a sign of the need for greater civic education and participation and new models of power sharing. The chapter concludes by stating that the success of Korea's new model of development will be determined by the extent to which these trends can be incorporated and whether people are willing to make difficult decisions.

The government has also recently increased its investments in infrastructure projects, to support economic growth and to promote social equity.

It made efforts to streamline the government's organization and privatize public companies with more efficiency, and reform administrative regulations.
Since the end of Cold War, South Korea pursues a strategy of the integration of its economy with the rest and beyond the region. Exports of high-tech consumer electronics as well as advanced manufacturing technologies have become a major source of income. Additionally, the government has been pushing the Saemaeul Undong (New Community Movement) initiative, which is transforming the country from an agricultural society to one that is focused on manufacturing.
The country also has a high standard of living, and provides various benefits to employees, such as pregnancy leave and job security. The crisis challenged the traditional wisdom about Asia's miracle economies, and prompted an overhaul of the role of governments in regulating risky private ventures.
It seems that Korea's fate is still uncertain in the following changes. A new generation of leaders have taken on the image as a "strong leader" and have begun to explore market-oriented policies. A strong domestic power base makes it difficult to implement any radical change.
Disadvantages
The reemergence and influence of creationists is a major obstacle for Korean science in its efforts to educate the public about evolution. While the majority of Koreans favor teaching evolution in schools, some creationist groups -- led by a microbiologist named Bun-Sam Lim, the head of the Society for Textbook Revise (STR)--is pushing for its deletion from textbooks. STR claims that teaching evolution encourages the idea of a "materialist atheism" and presents an "unhopeful worldview" for students. This can cause them to lose their faith in humanity.
The causes of anti-evolutionist sentiments are complex and diverse. Some researchers suggest that it is due to religious belief, while others point to an increasing prevalence of anti-intellectualism, which has been exacerbated by growing political elite fragmentation along ideologies, regions, class, and gender. Additionally the one-sided populism of the government, bolstered by powerful conservative think tanks and business interests which has led to public disdain for the scientific community.
Ultimately, the widespread vulnerability that were identified in this study indicate the need for urgent targeted policy interventions to preemptively reduce these vulnerabilities. These insights will help Seoul to reach its goal of becoming an urban landscape that is harmonious.
In the COVID-19 case, pinpointing the vulnerable neighborhoods and the occupants will be crucial to drafting detailed, compassionate policy measures that will bolster their welfare and safety. For example, the disproportionate impact of the disease on Jjokbangs reflects socio-economic disparities which can increase vulnerability to natural and human-made catastrophes.
To overcome this, South Korea needs a more inclusive civil society that can bring all communities together to solve the city's biggest challenges. This requires a fundamental shift in the structure of institutional politics, starting with the power of the president. The Blue House can mobilize a large bureaucracy and utilize the Supreme Prosecutor's Office, and the intelligence bureau to exert influence on the political scene. These agencies are not subject to any checks by parliamentary bodies or independent inspection agencies. This gives the president tremendous power to force his or her own vision on the rest of the nation. This is a recipe that could lead to polarization and stagnation of the country.
