How to Choose the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaner
Robot vacuums will save you time and effort when it comes to cleaning. The best ones are adept at getting rid of dust light debris, cords and dust.
The higher-end models even sweep your floors, though they aren't able to climb the stairs. Find models that feature intelligent mapping, real-time hazards avoidance, and large self-emptying bins.
Best Overall
The top robots that we have tested are effective and easy to use and are able to cope with the everyday messes. You'll also want a robot that can take on stairs and that has decent cleaning power for carpets. If you're looking for a model with additional features, think about one that comes with smart mapping technology or an app that allows you to control it remotely.
Camryn Rabideau is a contributing reviewer and writer for shopping at PEOPLE who has tested numerous robotic vacuums. She's a big fan of robovacs that offer the most convenience, such as self-emptying bins and charging docks that automatically empty and fill water tanks for mopping robots. She's also a big fan of the robots that can recognize landmarks like furniture legs and power cords, so they don't get tripped up when climbing stairs.
Compared to the top-rated models, this Black and Decker robot vacuum has less object-avoidance technology, and its navigation score is lower. It does however have an enormous dust bin that doesn't require regular emptying and has a lengthy battery life. Additionally, it has the ability to plan cleaning times and return to the place the last time it was used, making it easier to clean larger homes. This model is a good option for pet owners, as it can avoid the tangles of fur and food particles.
In our tests, we found that the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra combined with a LIDAR (light) sensor which can identify obstacles and map rooms with a structured-light sensor to identify objects and detect edges. It can avoid liquid droplets, stairs, and furniture legs easily using this combination. It can also save up to four floor plans for future use. It is able to pause and resume the cleaning process at any time, so that you can continue with your chores while it does. The included app offers the 3D image of your home, room labels and more advanced cleaning options.
The robot isn't as effective at cleaning as our top models, however it is a pro in picking up larger items like orzo pasta, metal screws and fine debris such as sand. The only drawbacks are that it's not able to mop and that its navigation system is less impressive.
The best option for Carpet
If you have carpeting in your home, search for a robot vacuum with strong pickup and maneuverability scores on carpet and rug. Many models are good at collecting dust from low-pile rugs, and some do a decently job of picking up heavier debris like orzo pasta and metal screws. But they don't pick up fine particles as well as canister or upright vacuums and may also miss ground-in dirt close to baseboards and thresholds.
For homes with carpets, a 2-in-1 robotic vacuum/mop is the best option. You can exchange a cleaning bin for a moist mopping mat. The Roborock Q Revo, for instance, vacuums and a mops wet with circular pads that spin at a speed of 200 rotations per minute. It recognizes and raises its pads when they come into contact with carpets, preventing the flooring from getting wet. You don't have remove them or replace them every time. The Q Revo is also better than other robot vacuum/mops at staying clear of obstacles and rugs, while also getting close to them and thresholds, and staying clear of obstacles.
Another good option is the iRobot Roomba Combo i5, which performed very well in our tests and can be scheduled via the app to clean when you're away from home. It can be set up to mop only. We loved its navigation on floors with no flooring as well as carpets. The Combo i5 has a long runtime and excellent path planning for a device of this size.
If you're looking for a modern model, you can look at the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Self-Empty Robot Vacuum & Mop. It has a large charging dock that can last for weeks without needing to be empty and has amazing navigation abilities and automatic emptying on carpets and floors. It's also got a smart-mapping feature and can be programmed to only operate during certain hours of the day (a useful feature to keep children and pets who are prone to mischief from causing havoc). The Shark has less suction power than some other mop/robot combos, but its still very good at picking up hair and pet hair and is the best value of our top choices.
Best for Hard Flooring
Robot vacuums are ideal for floors made of hardwood, since they can navigate through obstacles with ease without causing damage the surfaces that are not. They are fantastic at picking up dust and crumbs, but they struggle with pet hair and larger debris. They also lack the suction power of a top-of-the-line upright or canister vacuum, which is why they're not an ideal choice for carpeted rooms or upholstery that requires deep cleaning.
The best two-in-one robots combine a vacuum and a mop, taking care of the entire chore in one pass. Choose a model that has an onboard sensor to detect changes in the floor's texture and adjust suction in line with the changes. This feature is available on the ECOVACS Deebot T9+ and lets it effortlessly transition from hard carpeting to soft carpeting.
If you have a lot of hardwood flooring in your home you might want to think about a robot mop and vacuum combination like the Eufy S1 Pro. This model uses an efficient robot vacuum with smart navigation to clean hardwood and other hard surfaces, and it has the ability to mop as well. Its sensors allow it to stay clear of hazards like stairs.
The Eufy S1 Pro mop is designed to wash hardwood floors using downward pressure, instead of simply swab them to get rid of dirt and dust. The mop pads are reusable, which reduce the amount of waste, and spread germs less, and can be cleaned at the docking station, saving your time. The mop pads can also be washed, dried and reused.
Both the robovac and the mop can be controlled from your smartphone to make it easier to manage the device. You can, for example make use of the app to create zones where the vacuum cannot enter, label different rooms, or plan specific cleaning times. The eufy S1 Pro has an auto-emptying port that collects debris via trapdoors, and then stores it in a bag-less or disposable bin. This means you don't need to empty the bin manually as often as other models.
Ideal for small Spaces
These robots are made for small spaces. They have smaller bins that contain less waste, and they're more efficient than the larger models in navigating tight corners. They can also fit under furniture, whereas bigger robots struggle to reach. These robots are also cheaper than more expensive models, but you'll need to empty their dirt bins manually at the end each cleaning session.
A couple of years ago, robotic vacuums went through a major change when manufacturers started adding sensors to help them navigate and avoid household objects that traditional sensors would become stuck on or over. These advancements have reduced the number of times our testers had to clean up after a robotic snag, whether it was a power cord, a toy or pet waste.
robot floor cleaner aren't completely eliminating all issues with these machines, however. The less expensive models are unable to navigate the same obstacles as older models, and they need an adequate amount of light in order to see where they are moving. If you are living in a dark space or have a lot of furniture with low-profiles, consider buying a model that utilizes top-mounted spinning LIDAR units to map your space, as our top overall and runner-up picks do. This lets them stay clear of stairs and other obstacles when working in darkness.
They can be programmed to only use their cliff sensors only when they are on or near the ground, but not when they are above it. It's essential to cover mirrors in order to stop this from happening. The lasers used by LIDAR-based models may bounce off reflective surfaces, making the robot believe it's in a different room.
Some of the models we recommend will allow you to create virtual no-go areas for areas you don't wish the robot to enter. This is helpful for those with pets or children who are small. These features aren't available on all models we test. Read our full reviews before making your choice.
