Health Issues That Affect German Shepherd Life Expectancy

Elbow Dysplasia

Degenerative Myelopathy is a neurological disease that slowly affects the spinal cord of German Shepherd dogs and causes weakness in the hind legs. DM symptoms usually appear in older dogs and progress to paralysis. The condition is considered the canine equivalent to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease). It is unclear why some dogs with this condition develop it, while others do not despite having a genetic predisposition.

Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for DM. The symptoms can be controlled with medication, but the disease progresses and eventually causes paralysis of the forelimbs, too. Certain dogs can endure for months or even years with a high quality of life. However, it's typical for owners to choose to kill their pet if they are in a position to walk or stand on its own.

Your doctor will conduct a neurological exam and take a detailed medical history to diagnose DM.
