Are You In Search Of Inspiration? Try Looking Up Robot Vacuum Cleaner Best
How to Choose the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaner

A robot vacuum will save you a lot of time and effort when it comes to regular touch-ups. The best models do a great job of removing dust and light debris and allow you to designate no-go zones in pets or power cords.

The more expensive ones can even sweep your floors but they aren't able to climb up stairs. Choose models that have intelligent mapping, real-time hazard avoidance, and large self-emptying bins.

robot vacuum cleaners tested were reliable, user-friendly and able to cope with the daily debris. You'll also want a robot that can handle stairs and that has decent ability to pick up carpets. If you're looking for a model with extra features, consider an option that incorporates smart mapping technology, or an app to control it remotely.

Camryn Rabideau is a contributing reviewer and writer for shopping at PEOPLE who has tested dozens of robotic vacuums. She prefers robovacs that have the most features, such as those with self-emptying bins and charging stations that automatically empty and fill water tanks to mop robotic vacuums. She also enjoys robots that can recognize landmarks such as furniture legs and power cables, so they won't trip up when climbing stairs.

In comparison to the top-rated models, this Black and Decker robot vacuum isn't as advanced in its object-avoidance capabilities and its score for navigation is lower. It does however have an enormous dust bin that doesn't need frequent emptying, and has a long battery life. Additionally, it has a feature that allows you to schedule cleaning sessions and then return to the location where it stopped last, making it easier to clean larger areas. This model is also a great option for pet owners as it is able to spot and prevent tangled hair as well as fallen food particles.

In our tests, we found that the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra combined a LIDAR (light) sensor which can identify obstacles and map rooms by using a structured-light sensor to identify objects as well as detect edges. The combination lets it stay clear of stairs, drops of liquid, and furniture legs with ease and save up to four floor maps for future references. It is also able to stop the cleaning process at any point and return to where it stopped, so you can do chores while the robot is working. The app includes the 3D image of your home, with room labels as well as advanced cleaning options.

Although this model isn't able to clean as well as our top-rated models, it excels in removing small particles like sand and baking soda and heavier objects, like orzo pasta and screws made of metal. The only downsides are that it cannot mop and its navigation system is less impressive.

The best option for Carpet

If you have carpeting, choose one with a high rating for rug and carpet maneuverability and pickup. Many models do a good job of picking up dust embedded in low-pile carpet and some do a good job of picking up heavier debris such as orzo pasta, metal screws and pet hair. They don't pick-up fine particles like an upright canister, and they may miss dirt close to baseboards or thresholds.

For carpeted homes the 2-in-1 robot vacuum is the best choice. You can exchange a cleaning bin to a damp mopping mat. The Roborock Q Revo is a 2-in-1 robot vacuum and mop that can clean and mop at the same time with circular pads spinning at 200 rpm. It detects and raises the pads when it comes into contact with carpet to prevent wetting the floor. Additionally, you don't need to remove or replace them after each use. The Q Revo is also more efficient than other robot vacuum/mops in avoiding obstacles and getting closer to carpets and thresholds.

The iRobot Roomba Combo i5 is another option worth considering. It performed well in our tests, and you can schedule it to clean your home while you are away. It can be set to mop only. We liked its navigation on floors with no flooring and rugs. The Combo i5 has a long time to run and excellent path planning for an item of this size.

If you're looking for a top-of-the-line vacuum, the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum & Mop is a great option. It has a large dock that can last for weeks without needing to be empty. It also has impressive capability to auto-empty carpets and floors with no floor. It also has a smart mapping system and can be set to only run during certain times (a useful feature for keeping the sly children and animals from running amok). The Shark isn't as powerful than some other robot vacuums and mops but it's efficient in removing hair and pet hair. It is the best value of our top choices.

The best choice for hardwood floors

Robot vacuums are ideal for floors with hardwood floors because they can navigate around obstacles without causing damage to bare surfaces. They are fantastic in removing dust and crumbs, but they struggle with pet hair or larger debris. They lack the suction power of the top canister or upright vacuum, which makes them unsuitable for deep cleaning carpeted or upholstery areas.

The most effective robots come with two-in-one features, combining the power of a mop with a vacuum to complete the task in one go. Find one that has an onboard sensor to detect any changes in the flooring and adjust suction in line with the changes. The ECOVACS DEEBOT T9+ for instance, comes with this feature and can transition seamlessly from soft to hard carpeting.

If you have a lot of hardwood flooring in your home, you might want to think about a robot mop and vacuum combination like the Eufy S1 Pro. This model is a powerful robotic vacuum that has intelligent navigation to clean hardwood and other hard surfaces. Additionally, it can mop too. Its sensors help it avoid the stairs and other hazards, so you don't have to worry about the robot falling down the stairs and damaging your hardwood.

When you need mops the eufy S1 Pro is designed to actually clean hardwood floors using downward pressure rather than wipe them clean to get rid of light dirt and dust. Its pads that can be reused reduce waste and help to spread less germs. They can also be cleaned at docking stations to reduce time. The mop pads can also be washed and dried to avoid spreading mold.

Both the robovac as well as the mop are both controlled by your smartphone to make it easier to manage the device. For instance, you can use the app to set up an area that the vacuum won't enter, label separate rooms, or schedule cleaning sessions for specific areas. The eufy S1 Pro also has an auto-emptying dock that sucks debris through a trapdoor, and is then stored in a disposable or bagless bin, meaning you don't have to empty the bin manually as often as you do with other models.

Best suited for small Spaces

These robots are specifically designed for small spaces. They have smaller bins that hold less debris, and they're more efficient than larger models when it comes to navigating tight corners. They can also fit under furniture, where the larger robots are unable to reach. They are generally less expensive than the higher-end models however, you'll need to manually empty their dirt compartments at the end of each cleaning session.

A couple of years ago, robotic vacuums went through a major change when manufacturers began adding sensors to help them navigate around and avoid household objects that their conventional sensors would get stuck on or run over. These advances have reduced the number of times our testers needed to clean up after a robotic snag whether it was a power cord, toy or pet waste.

However, the latest sensors haven't resolved all of the issues these machines face. The cheapest models are still struggling with the same challenges that the older ones did and most require a certain amount light to be able see where they're headed. If you live in a dark house or have a lot of furniture that is low-profile, think about getting one that uses top-mounted spinning LIDAR units to map your space, like our best overall and runner-up choices do. This allows them to avoid obstacles like stairs and other ones when working in darkness.

These models can also be programmed to use their cliff sensors when they are on or near the ground, and not when they are above it. You'll still want to cover any mirrors that may interfere with this function however, since the laser used by a LIDAR-based model can bounce off reflective surfaces, causing the robot to think it's in a different room.

Some of the models we recommend allow you to set up virtual no-go zones in areas you don't want the robot to go, which is useful if you have small pets or children. Those features aren't available on all the models we test, so be sure to read our full reviews of the choices below before you make a purchase.
