Feeding grain-rich diets often results in subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA), a condition associated with ruminal dysbiosis and systemic inflammation. Yet, the effect of SARA on hindgut microbiota, and whether this condition is aggravated by exogenous immune stimuli, is less understood. Therefore, the aims of this study were to determine the effects of an intermittent high-grain SARA model on the hindgut microbial community, and to evaluate whether the effects of SARA on the fecal microbiome and fermentation were further affected by an intramammary lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge. A total of 18 early-lactating Simmental cows were divided into 3 groups (n = 6); 2 were fed a SARA-inducing feeding regimen (60% concentrate), 1 was fed a control (CON) diet (40% concentrate). On d 30, 1 SARA group (SARA-LPS) and the CON group (CON-LPS) were intramammarily challenged with a single dose of 50 µg of LPS from Escherichia coli O26B6, whereas the remaining 6 SARA cows (SARA-PLA) received a placebo. Using a longitudinal , the SARA-inducing feeding regimen promoted important microbial changes at d 30, including reduced diversity and evenness compared with CON, whereas the external LPS challenge led to changes in the microbial community without affecting fecal fermentation properties.High levels of milk production coupled with low feed intake cause negative energy balance in early lactation, especially in the first month postpartum (PP). Therefore, specific nutritional management at this time may improve nutritional and metabolic status with the possibility of contrasting genotypes responding differently. Thus, the objective of this study was to compare the effects of nutritional management strategies and dairy cow genotype on milk production, metabolic status, and some fertility parameters during early lactation in a pasture-based system. HS-173 chemical structure Sixty Holstein Friesian cows were blocked on parity and genotype [low-fertility high-milk (LFHM) and high-fertility low-milk (HFLM)] and were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, in a randomized complete block design based on calving date, previous 305-d milk yield, and precalving body condition score (BCS). The nutritional management treatments were (1) ad libitum access to fresh pasture plus an allowance of 3 kg of ed concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids (-0.12 mmol/L) and β-hydroxybutyric acid (-0.10 mmol/L) compared with the CTR group. Cows fed TMR had smaller BCS losses from calving to 60 d PP. There was no effect of any treatment on uterine recovery. Cows in the LFHM group demonstrated greater milk production in the first 30 and 100 d in milk. These results demonstrate that feeding cows a TMR for the first month of lactation has positive effects on milk output, metabolic status, and BCS profile.We developed a custom bovine leukemia virus (BLV) control program for the Alberta dairy industry, consisting of a risk assessment and a comprehensive list of best management practices (BMP) aimed at prevention of BLV transmission between cattle. This control program was implemented on 11 farms for approximately 1 yr. Blood samples were collected from all cattle ≥12 mo old, and serum was tested with a commercial ELISA. Risk assessments were performed on each farm, risk-connected on-farm management was identified, and management changes expected to prevent transmission of BLV between cattle were suggested by the first author and agreed upon with each farmer. Throughout the following year, all participating farmers were visited multiple times to identify and overcome barriers to implementation and to monitor progress. After approximately 1 yr of implementing BLV control, all cattle ≥12 mo old on farm with a negative or no previous test result were sampled, and the within-herd prevalence was determined. The mediaarmers committed to their implementation.Direct-fed microbial feed additives with potential to enhance growth performance, gut health, and immunity have gained considerable popularity in neonatal calf production. Lactobacillus plantarum GB LP-1 (LP) produced by a proprietary fermentation process could be a viable direct-fed microbial feed for neonatal calves. The hypothesis was that feeding LP may ease transitioning from milk replacer (MR) to calf starter (CS) by improving gut health and appetite, while minimizing health challenges from pathogens and stress to improve growth performance. The experimental objective was to evaluate LP in an MR feeding program at 3 inclusion rates. Fifty-one 2- to 5-d-old Holstein bull calves were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments using a randomized complete block design. Treatments were (1) Control (LP0) LP fed at 0 g/d; (2) LP4 LP fed at 4 g/d; and (3) LP8 LP fed at 8 g/d. Calves were fed MR at 0.57 kg/d for 14 d via bucket, which was increased to 0.85 kg/d until 35 d, and were then fed once daily at 0.425 kg/d Fecal scores improved linearly with increasing LP inclusion rate. These data demonstrate that feeding Lactobacillus plantarum GB LP-1 to neonatal calves improves gut health to increase growth performance at 4 and 8 g/d, while feed efficiency was greatest at 4 g/d.The difference between the theoretical maximum (potential) production and the actual production realized by farmers is referred to as the yield gap. The objectives of this study are to develop a mechanistic model for dairy cows that allows yield gap analysis in dairy production systems and to evaluate model performance. We extended and adapted an existing model for beef cattle to dairy cattle, and the new model was named Livestock simulator for Generic analysis of Animal Production Systems-Dairy cattle (LiGAPS-Dairy). Milk production and growth of an individual cow over its entire lifespan were described as a function of the animal's genotype, the ambient climate, feed quality, and available feed quantity. The model was parameterized for Holstein-Friesian cows. After calibration, we evaluated model performance by comparing simulated results and measured results from experimental farms in the Netherlands, which were not used for model calibration. Cows were permanently housed in stables, where the diet consisted of predetermined amounts of concentrates and ad libitum high-quality roughage.
