The History Of Robot Vacuum Cleaner Best
How to Choose the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaner

A robot vacuum will help you save time and effort when it comes to regular touch-ups. The best ones are adept at getting rid of dust, light debris and cords.

The more expensive ones can even sweep your floors, but they can't climb up stairs. Choose models that have intelligent mapping, real-time hazards avoidance, and roomy self-emptying bins.

Best Overall

The top robots that we have tested are effective and easy to use and are able to cope with the everyday messes. You'll need a model with adequate carpet-picking capabilities and the capability to climb stairs. If you want a robot with extra features, consider a model that has smart mapping technology, or an app to control it remotely.

Camryn Rabideau is a contributing shopping writer and product reviewer at PEOPLE who has tried dozens of robotic vacuums. She prefers the ones with the most features such as those with self-emptying bins and charging stations that automatically empty and refill the water tanks used to mop robotic vacuums. She's also a fan of robots that detect landmarks such as furniture legs and power cords so they don't trip when climbing stairs.

Compared with the top-rated models this Black and Decker robot vacuum is less equipped with object-avoidance technology and its navigation score is lower. It comes with a large non-refillable dustbin as well as an extended battery. It also has a feature which allows you to schedule cleaning times and then return to the place it stopped last, making it easier for you to cover larger homes. This model is also a great option for pet owners as it can spot and avoid tangled hair and fallen food particles.

In our tests in our tests, the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra combines with a LIDAR sensor that can map rooms and detect obstacles, with a structured light sensor to identify objects and detect edges. It can stay clear of liquid droplets, stairs, and furniture legs easily with this combination. It is also able to save up to four floor plans for future use. It can also stop the cleaning process at any point and resume where it left off, so you can do chores while the robot does its work. The app offers the 3D image of your home with room labels and advanced cleaning options.

Although this model isn't able to clean as well as our top-rated models, it is superior in removing small particles like sand and baking soda and heavier objects, like orzo pasta and screws made of metal. Its only drawbacks are that it isn't able to mop and has a less impressive navigation system.

The best for Carpet

If you have carpeting, pick a robot vacuum that has a high score for rug and carpet ability to maneuver and pick up. Many models are good at collecting dust from low-pile rugs. Some are capable of cleaning up larger debris like orzo pasta and metal screws. But they don't pick up small particles as well as canister or upright vacuums, and they may not pick up dirt that is ground-in close to baseboards and thresholds.

The best choice for most carpeted homes is a two-in-one robot vacuum and mop that allows you to swap out an empty bin for cleaning and mopping pad with damp. The Roborock Q Revo is a 2-in-1 robotic vacuum/mop that is able to clean and mop simultaneously with circular pads spinning at 200 revolutions per minute. It detects and lifts its pads when they come into contact with carpet, preventing the floor from becoming wet. You don't have to take them off or replace them each time. The Q Revo also performs better than other robot vacuum/mops in the absence of obstacles and in being close to carpets and thresholds.

The iRobot Roomba Combo i5 is another good option. It was a great performer in our tests and you can set it up to schedule it to clean your home even when you're away. It can be set to only mop. We liked its navigation on floors with no flooring and carpets. The Combo i5 also has a very long runtime and a great path-planning feature for a device of this size.

If you're looking for a high-tech vacuum, the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum & Mop is a fantastic option. It comes with a large charging dock that can last for months without needing to be emptying and boasts amazing navigation capabilities and auto-emptying on bare floors and carpets. It also has a clever mapping system, and can be programmed to only run for certain times (a useful feature for keeping mischievous children and dextrous animals from running wild). The Shark has less powerful suction than other robot vacuums and mops, but its still very good at picking up hair and pet hair. It is the best value of our top picks.

Best for Hard Floors

Robot vacuums are the best choice for floors made of hardwood, since they can navigate around obstacles without causing damage to the surfaces that are not. They are fantastic at picking up dust and crumbs, but struggle with pet hair or other debris. They lack the suction power of a top-of-the-line upright or canister vacuum, which is why they're not the best choice for carpeted rooms or upholstery that requires deep cleaning.

good robot vacuum Robot Vacuum Mops -in-1 robots combine a vacuum and a mop and take care of a more complete chore in one go. Look for one that has an onboard sensor that can detect changes in the floor texture and adjust suction to match. The ECOVACS DEEBOT T9+ for example, has this feature and can transition seamlessly from soft to hard carpeting.

If your home is composed of hardwood floors, consider a robotic mop and vacuum combination like the Eufy S1 Pro. This model features an efficient robot vacuum with intelligent navigation to clean hardwood and other hard surfaces, and it can mop as well. The sensors help it avoid stairs and other hazards so you don't have to be worried about the robot falling down the stairs and breaking your hardwood.

The eufy S1 Pro mop is designed to clean hardwood floors by applying downward pressure, not simply swab them to remove dust and dirt. Its reusable pads reduce waste and spread fewer germs. They can also be cleaned at docking stations to help save time. They can also be washed, dried and reused.

Both the robovac and mop can be controlled by your smartphone, making it easier to manage the device. For instance you can make use of the app to designate a no-go zone where the vacuum can't go or mark rooms as separate or schedule cleaning sessions for specific areas. The eufy S1 Pro also has an auto-emptying dock, which collects debris through a trapdoor and is then stored in a disposable or bagless bin, meaning you don't need to empty the bin manually like you do with other models.

Best for Small Spaces

These robots are specifically designed for smaller spaces. They have smaller bins which can hold less garbage. They are also more efficient in moving around corners more efficiently as opposed to larger models. They can also fit underneath furniture that larger robots have difficulty reaching. These robots are also cheaper than higher-end models, but you will need to empty their dirt compartments manually at the end each cleaning session.

A few years ago robot vacuums underwent a major change. Manufacturers began adding sensors that could help them navigate around and avoid household items that their conventional sensors might be stuck on or across. The improvements in technology reduced the number of times our testers were required to clean up after a robotic accident.

However, the latest sensors haven't resolved all of the problems these machines have. The cheapest models still struggle with the same issues that the older models faced and, in addition, they need a certain amount of light to see where they're going. If you live in a dark house or have lots of furniture that is low-profile, think about purchasing top-mounted spinning LIDAR units to map your space, like our top overall and runner-up choices do. This allows them to work in darkness and avoid obstacles like stairs.

In addition being able to work in the dark, these models can be set to use their cliff sensors only on or near the floor, not above them. It is still recommended to cover any mirrors that might interfere with this function though, as the lasers used by a LIDAR-based model could bounce off reflective surfaces, causing the robot to believe it's in another room.

Some of the models we recommend also allow you to create virtual no-go zones to protect areas where you do not want the robot to go, which can be useful if you have small pets or children. These features aren't present on all models we test. Check out our complete reviews before deciding.
