Evolution Korea
South Korea's democracy is susceptible to populist tendencies. It's still more stable than we had hoped for.
The country is looking for a new paradigm of development. A Confucian culture that stresses respect for the ancestors and gendered family relations continues influence the society. There are indications of a secularist cultural trend emerging.
Origins
In the early days, the ancestors to modern Koreans were capable of survival through hunting and gathering wild food. Then around 10,000 years ago they began to cultivate crops such as millet and beans. They also raised livestock and created furs. These people formed tribal states one after another in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also developed a metallurgy business, making iron tools and bronze. They also traded with other countries and introduced celadon and block printing to Japan along with art styles as well as a written language and paper making.
Gojoseon was founded in 2333 BCE on the southern peninsula. The state adopted Buddhism and adopted Chinese culture, including Confucian philosophy. During this time the people of Buyeo became part of Gojoseon. Gojoseon had a hierarchical structure with a monarch and high-ranking officials were drawn from the landed aristocracy, while the rest of the population were peasants. The state imposed taxes on these citizens, and often required them to serve in the army or work on projects of the government, like building fortifications.
By the end of this period, the state of Baekje was founded by Onjo who was a prince of Goguryeo and the son of Jumong who was the founder of Goguryeo. 에볼루션코리아 Evolution KR expanded its territory to the southwest of the peninsula, and was at war with Goguryeo and China's commanderies in the area. Baekje accepted Confucian ideas in its state beliefs system in 1390 CE and introduced the male-centric concept of filiopiety a tenet. In the name of filiopiety, fathers were accountable to their families and they must be respected and obeyed by everyone, even their grandchildren and children.
Goryeo, which would rule from 918 until 1392 CE introduced the world to the Hangul alphabet built on the patterns created by the mouth when it was pronounced. This significantly improved the communication between people and resulted in an explosion of the writing of Buddhist texts. In addition, movable metal type printing was introduced, and woodblock printing was improved. In 1145 CE the Samguk Sagi, or "History of the Three Kingdoms" was recorded for the first time.
The evolution of Korea
The Korean peninsula was habitable from Neolithic times to. Early evidence of human settlements can be found in the form cist graves paved with stone, with valuable items like amazonite jewelry being buried alongside the dead. Megalithic structures, also known as dolmens, and made of large stones in a single piece, are common in the country.
Gojoseon was the first political state to be recognized in the first half of 1st millennium BCE. The peninsula was ruled by various states during the Three Kingdoms period (57 BC- 635 CE) including Baekje Goguryeo and Silla. Additionally, the northern part of the peninsula was occupied by the Balhae kingdom, which the majority of historians don't consider to be a legitimate Korean state.
After the Three Kingdoms arose the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period, or Several States Period. Baekje is the most powerful of these states, was weakened by the fall of Goguryeo (676 CE) and was left with only its southern territories in Manchuria and the western region around Hwanghae Bay. Eastern Buyeo, and the Gaya confederacy, thrived for a while.
The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to collaborate in order to expand their territories. In the final phase, Silla, with significant Chinese assistance, defeated all other states and unified the peninsula in 935 CE.
As Korea is entering a post-crisis period its development model appears to be in flux. The people who are affronted by the immense cost of the old system would prefer the need for a comprehensive program of liberalization of capital as well as labor markets. On the other hand, people who support the old system try to protect it by promoting nationalist sentiments and by inflating fears about potential job losses.
The academic and policy analysts remain starkly divided as to the extent to the extent that these two developments are driving Koreas evolution towards a new model of economic governance. This article examines developments to date, by looking at five phases of Korea's political development: illiberal democracy (1945-60) democratic authoritarianism (1961-72), authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87) democratic paternalism (1987-2001), and democratic participation (2002 to present). This article also identifies some key factors that seem to be shaping these processes.
Creationism in Korea
In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have had success in promoting their views among this population. A survey from 2009 showed that almost one-third of respondents didn't believe in evolution. Of those who voted, 41% said that there wasn't enough scientific evidence to support evolution 39% claimed that the theory was in contradiction to their religious beliefs; and 17% said it was difficult to comprehend. This level of disbelief is similar to the United States where a similar number do not believe that humans evolved from less advanced types of life.
In the past, the anti-evolution movement in Korea was primarily focused on teaching students and the introduction of Christ to them. An increase in the interest in creation science occurred in 1980, with a four-day seminar held during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul that featured Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the keynote speakers. The event attracted a large audience of scientists, professors and church leaders.
The success of this event resulted in the creation of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31st 1981. The event was widely covered in the national press, including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.
KACR began publishing a newsletter titled CREATION. In it, the organization reported on its own activities and published articles on scientific evidence for the existence of God. It also translated slides and film strips from ICR and also some books on creationism which were already published outside of Korea. KACR members gave lectures in churches and universities throughout the country.
A KACR success was witnessed at KAIST University in Seoul. Students at KAIST in Seoul were so interested in creationism, they raised money and got funding to construct a small creationist museum on campus.
In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine called CREATION, which covers topics in the field of creation science. It also sponsored a series of lectures by ICR staff. It has also established an organization of local branch offices that give talks and seminars to children and community groups.
Changes in South Korea
In the late 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok, was replaced by miniskirts and other fashion elements from abroad. The traditional Korean music was also replaced by jazz and rock & roll. During this time the famous samulnori or masked dance-dramas, were popular with the general public. These dramatic pieces were performed to the accompaniment of shaman drums as well as various types of musical instruments.
The economic crisis has shaped Korea's new model of development. The biggest challenge facing the new regime is to find a balance between state-led and market-oriented economic policies. It also requires changing incentives, monitoring or disciplining systems that have shaped the system prior to the crisis. These issues are addressed in Chapters 3 and 4.
The Baekje was founded by Onjo, prince of Goguryeo and the third son of Jumong, Baekje was established in the middle of the Hangang River, those from Buyeo and other areas and immigrants from northern China. Baekje, a major regional power in the early 4th Century extended its territory to Mahan in north and Jeollanam-do south. In the process, it entered into frequent conflict with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanders along the border.
The fall of Silla in the 8th and early 9th centuries enabled powerful local factions to emerge. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as its capital. He controlled a part of the present-day Jeolla province and Chungcheong. Later, he moved the capital to Wansanju and became a rival of Goguryeo.
However his rule was not long-lasting. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935, and then united Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla, later incorporated Baekje into Goryeo peacefully as a successor. Additionally, Wang Geon introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened a centralized rule system. This marked the conclusion of the Three Kingdoms period. The Korean peninsula was then ruled by the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually developed into powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
