South Korea's democracy is prone to populist inclinations. It's still more stable than expected.

The country is in search of an innovative development paradigm. The Confucian culture, which stresses respect for ancestors as well as gendered family relationships, continues to be influential in the society. There are indications of a secularist culture trend emerging.

Origins

In the prehistoric era the ancestors of today's Koreans were capable of surviving by hunting and gathering wild food. Around 10,000 years ago they began to cultivate millet and beans as well as other crops. They also raised livestock, and made furs. They formed tribal states in Manchuria and later on the Korean peninsula. They also created an industry for metalworking, which produced bronze tools and later iron tools. They also traded with other countries and introduced block printing to Japan and also art styles as well as a written language and papermaking.

Gojoseon was founded in 2333 BCE on the southern peninsula. The state embraced Buddhism and adopted Chinese culture, including Confucian philosophy. In this time, the inhabitants of Buyeo joined Gojoseon. Gojoseon was a state that was hierarchical with the monarch and top officials were members of the aristocracy of the land, while the majority of the population was peasants. The state imposed taxes on the citizens and often required them to join the army or take part in projects for the government like building fortifications.

Onjo Prince Onjo, a prince from Goguryeo who was also the son of Jumong the founder of Goguryeo, founded the state of Baekje at the close of the time. The new kingdom expanded to the southwest of the peninsula, and fought with China's commandos and Goguryeo's in the region. Baekje incorporated aspects of Confucian thinking into its state belief system and made the male centered filiopiety concept as a law in 1390 CE. Under the cover of filiopiety fathers were responsible to their families. They were expected to be obeyed by everyone and respected by their children and grandchildren.


Goryeo, a country that ruled from 918 until 1392 CE in the year 1392 CE, introduced to the world the Hangul Alphabet, based on the shapes that were created by the mouth when it pronounces. This greatly improved communication and led to a rise in the writing of Buddhist text. Additionally, movable metallic type printing was introduced, and woodblock printing was improved. It was at this time that the Samguk sagi, also known as 'History of the Three Kingdoms' was first recorded in 1145 CE.

The evolution of Korea

The Korean peninsula was habitable from Neolithic times to. Early evidence of human settlements can be found in the form of graves paved with stone, with valuable items like amazonite jewelry being buried alongside the dead. Megalithic structures known as dolmens, made of massive single stones, are also widespread throughout the country.

Gojoseon became the first political state to be recognized in the first half of the 1st millennium BCE. After that the peninsula was ruled by several states in the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCbetween 635 and 57 BC CE) including Baekje, Goguryeo, and Silla. The northern region of the peninsula was occupied for a period by the Balhae Kingdom, which historians do not believe to be a real Korean state.

After the Three Kingdoms, several smaller states emerged in the Proto-Three Kingdoms period, or Several States Period (yeolgugsidae). Baekje was the most powerful of these states, was diminished by the fall of Goguryeo (676 CE) leaving only its southern regions in Manchuria, and its western region around Hwanghae Bay. Eastern Buyeo, and the Gaya confederacy, thrived for a short period of time.

The Unified Silla Kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms started to collaborate to expand their territories. In the final, Silla, with significant Chinese aid, conquered all other states and united the peninsula in 935 CE.

As Korea enters a post-crisis era the way it develops appears to be in flux. The people who are affronted by the enormous cost of the old system would prefer a thorough program of liberalization in capital as well as labor and product markets. On the other hand, supporters of the old system seek to protect it by using nationalist sentiments and inflating fears of job loss.

evolutionkr and policy analysts remain sharply divided on the extent to these two trends are driving Koreas evolution towards an economic model that is radically different from the one of governance. This article assesses developments to date by analyzing five phases of the country's political evolution: illiberal democracy (1945-60) democratic authoritarianism (1961-72), authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87), democratic paternalism (1987-2001), and democratic participation (2002 to the present). This article also highlights key factors that seem to be shaping these processes.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have succeeded in promoting their views among this population. A survey conducted in 2009 found that nearly one third of respondents do not believe in evolution. Of those, 41% claimed that there wasn't enough scientific evidence to support evolution 39% claimed that the theory contradicted their religion; and 17% said it was difficult to comprehend. This level of disbelief is similar to that of the United States where a similar percentage do not believe humans evolved from earlier types of life.

In the past, the anti-evolutionist campaign in Korea was primarily focused on teaching students and in bringing Christ to them. In 1980 an all-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the main speakers. This event attracted a huge number of professors, church leaders, and scientists.

The event's success led to the creation of the Korea Association of Creation Research on January 31st, 1980. The inauguration event was widely reported in the national press, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo and attracted a lot of attention.

KACR began publishing a newsletter titled CREATION. In it, the group published its own activities and published articles about scientific evidence for the existence of God. It also translated slides and film strips from ICR and also some books on the subject of creationism, which were already published outside of Korea. KACR members gave lectures across the nation in universities and churches.

One instance of a KACR success story took place at the KAIST university in Seoul. There, enough students were interested in the idea of creationism that they raised the money and support to construct an on-campus museum showing creationist models of fossils and other exhibits.

In addition to its work, KACR has published a bimonthly magazine, CREATION. The magazine covers subjects that pertain to the science of creation. It also hosted a series of lectures by ICR staff. It has also established an organization of local branch offices that host talks and seminars to schoolchildren and community groups.

Evolution in South Korea

In the late 19th century and beginning of 20th, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok, was replaced by miniskirts, as well as other fashion elements from abroad. Similar to the way traditional Korean music styles were replaced by modern rock and roll and jazz. During this period the samulnori, or masked dancing-dramas were very popular. These dramatic pieces were performed to the accompaniment of shaman drums and various types of musical instruments.

Korea's new development model is being formed in the aftermath of the economic crisis. The biggest challenge facing the new regime is to strike the right balance between market-oriented and state-led policies. It also involves changing incentives, monitoring or disciplining schemes which have created the system prior to the crisis. These issues are addressed in Chapters 3 & 4.

The Baekje was founded by Onjo, prince of Goguryeo and the third son of Jumong, Baekje was established jointly by the people who lived along the Hangang River, those from Buyeo and other areas, and migrants from northern China. In the early 4th century, Baekje was a major regional power and expanded its territory to Mahan in the north and Jeollanam-do in the south. It was therefore in constant conflict with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanders on the border.

The decline of Silla between the 8th and 9th centuries resulted in the rise of powerful local factions. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as its capital. He controlled a part of the present-day Jeolla province as well as Chungcheong. Later, he relocated the capital to Wansanju and became a rival to Goguryeo.

However the rule of his was short-lived. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935 and united Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla and later joined Baekje into Goryeo peacefully as a successor. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms, and strengthened the centrally-run system. This marked the end to the Three Kingdoms Period. The Korean peninsula was later ruled by the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually became powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
