In the near future, technological advances driven by the Fourth Industrial Revolution will boost the demand for integrated, power-efficient miniature lasers, which are important for optical data communications and advanced sensing applications. Androgen Receptor Antagonist Although top-down fabricated III-V semiconductor micro-disk and micro-ring lasers have been shown to be efficient light sources, challenges such as etching-induced sidewall roughness and poor fabrication scalability have been limiting the potential for high-density on-chip integration. Here, we demonstrate InP micro-ring lasers fabricated with a highly scalable epitaxial growth technique. With an optimized cavity design, the optically pumped micro-ring lasers show efficient room-temperature lasing with a lasing threshold of around 50 μJ cm-2 per pulse. Remarkably, through comprehensive modeling of the micro-ring laser, we demonstrate lasing mode engineering experimentally by tuning the vertical ring height. Our work is a major step toward realizing the high-density monolithic integration of III-V miniature lasers on submicrometer-scale optoelectronic devices. We report Pd-catalyzed annulations of in situ generated strained cyclic allenes. This methodology employs aryl halides and cyclic allene precursors as the reaction partners in order to generate fused heterocyclic products. The annulation proceeds via the formation of two new bonds and an sp3 center. Moreover, both diastereo- and enantioselective variants of this methodology are validated, with the latter ultimately enabling the rapid enantioselective synthesis of a complex hexacyclic product. Studies leveraging transition metal catalysis to intercept cyclic allenes represent a departure from the more common, historical modes of cyclic allene trapping that rely on nucleophiles or cycloaddition partners. As such, this study is expected to fuel the development of reactions that strategically merge transition metal catalysis and transient strained intermediate chemistry for the synthesis of complex scaffolds. In two-dimensional transitional metal dichalcogenides, tuning the spin-valley-layer coupling via changing layer numbers and stacking orders remains desirable for their application in valleytronics. Herein, six-point star-like MoSe2 nanoflakes simultaneously containing different atom registration regions from monolayer to bilayer with 2H and 3R stacking order were fabricated, and the valley polarizations were comparably investigated by circular polarized photoluminescent spectroscopy. The degree of valley polarization was detected to be about 12.5% in the monolayer and 10% in the 2H bilayer, but greatly upgraded to about 40% in the 3R bilayer MoSe2. This enhancement was attributed to the multiband spin splitting and generation of spin-dependent layer polarization for the 3R MoSe2 bilayer, which is well evidenced by our ab initio calculations of the energy band structures. Our results demonstrate that preparing TMD crystals with controllable stacking orders and interlayer coupling is a promising route to tune the valley index in TMDs for developing valleytronics technology.Understanding the interactions between the single components of hybrid systems is essential to drive the development of advanced functional materials. A prerequisite for this is the systematic variation of the building blocks of such compounds. Focusing on spiropyran@metal-organic framework (MOF) composite materials with noncovalently attached spiropyran dyes, both the host scaffold and the dye molecules can be systematically tuned. In this work, a broad substitution pattern was applied to systematically elucidate the characteristics of the resulting hybrid materials as a function of the supplemental substitution on spiropyran. The newly developed 12 composites exhibit substitution and host-dependent optical characteristics, which are particularly affected by the substitution of the 6'-position on the chromene ring. Through the favorable combination of the MOF host's polarity and an adequate strength of the spiropyran's indolinedonor-chromeneacceptor pair, reversible conversion between photoisomers is efficiently accomplished, especially for nitro-substituted spiropyrans inside MIL-68(In).The serine/threonine kinase DYRK1A has been implicated in regulation of a variety of cellular processes associated with cancer progression, including cell cycle control, DNA damage repair, protection from apoptosis, cell differentiation, and metastasis. In addition, elevated-level DYRK1A activity has been associated with increased severity of symptoms in Down's syndrome. A selective inhibitor of DYRK1A could therefore be of therapeutic benefit. We have used fragment and structure-based discovery methods to identify a highly selective, well-tolerated, brain-penetrant DYRK1A inhibitor which showed in vivo activity in a tumor model. The inhibitor provides a useful tool compound for further exploration of the effect of DYRK1A inhibition in models of disease.Coherent longitudinal lattice vibrations of black phosphorus provide unique access to the out-of-plane strain coupled in-plane optical properties. In this work, polarization-resolved femtosecond transient absorption microscopy is applied to study the anisotropic coherent phonon responses. Multiorder phonon harmonics were observed with thickness dependence well explained by the linear chain model, allowing rapid optical mapping of phonon frequency distributions. More interestingly, exotic coherent phonon oscillations occourred with a π-phase jump between the armchair and zigzag polarizations, which reveals opposite signs of photoelasticity under the longitudinal strain. Specifically, compressive strain reduces the imaginary refractive index in the armchair polarization but increases the real refractive index in the zigzag polarization, as confirmed by the ab initio calculations and thin film model. These fundamental properties of black phosphorus hold potential for applications in ultrafast and polarization-sensitive photoacoustic/photoelastic modulators.Coffee is a widely consumed beverage worldwide and has a high content of chlorogenic acids, polyphenols, methylxanthines, and volatile flavor compounds. Scientific evidence to support the beneficial health effects of coffee is limited, and validated urinary biomarkers of coffee intake are therefore needed. We observed 23 common putative biomarkers of coffee intake in three separate parallel intervention studies by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-quadrupole time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS) and multivariate analyses. Baseline samples from the NU-AGE study were used to confirm and validate 16 of these candidate biomarkers, including their robustness, time response, and dose response. These validated candidate biomarkers are N-methylpyridinium cation, 1-methyl-1H-pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde, 1H-pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde sulfate, 3-piperidinemethanol, furfurylidene-furfurylamine, 2-furoylglycine, N-substituted-5-(aminoethyl) furan-2-carbaldehyde derivative, 3',4'-dihydroxyacetophenone sulfate, caffeine, dihydroxystyrene glucuronide, ferulic acid sulfate, 4-ethylcatechol glucuronide, 3-feruloylquinic acid, 3,4-dihydroxystyrene sulfate, one unknown glucuronide, and one unknown sulfate.
