Consequently, vacuum switchgear experiences minimal contact erosion, leading to a longer maintenance-free lifespan.

The operation of vacuum switchgear requires less driving force compared to SF6, oil, and air switches, where contact movement is hindered by the dense medium. The simplicity of the mechanism, often just a spring-operated design, contributes to the mechanical longevity of vacuum switchgear systems.

When contacts open in a current-carrying state, metal vapor is generated between the contacts. This vapor allows current to continue flowing until the next current zero, where the arc is extinguished. The vapor quickly condenses back onto the contact surface, resulting in negligible erosion.
High Performance at High Currents:
Up to 10 kA, the arc remains diffuse, allowing for even distribution across the contact surface. Beyond this current, the arc tends to concentrate at a specific point, potentially causing localized heating. Manufacturers address this by designing specialized contact surfaces to evenly distribute the arc, thus minimizing wear.
