The Best Drip Coffee Machines
Drip coffee makers can be powerful machines that allow hands-free brewing. However, they can be heavy and bulky, taking up valuable counter space or even a spot under the cabinets.
The best drip machines are streamlined and simple to use. Some have extra features that make your morning cup of coffee more flexible, like programmable timers and self-cleaning modes.
1. De'Longhi TrueBrew
The De'Longhi TrueBrew is the perfect place to buy coffee. It can go from whole beans to a large carafe by pressing a few buttons. It has a built-in burr grinder (taken directly from De'Longhi's espresso machines) that measures the correct amount of coffee grounds and compacts them before making the coffee - eliminating pods and plastic filters.
It also comes with a variety of settings to suit the size and style, from 3oz espresso-style drinks to 16oz iced coffee or 40oz of a traditional carafe. It pours the coffee in your choice of vessel, from large mugs to the tiny espresso cups or tall travel mugs that don't normally fit under regular drip machines. It can even make tea!
Manufacturers love to invent absurd technical jargons and this one includes the Bean Extract Technology which "adapts and precisely grinds" the beans according to the choice you make. That's all marketing. The most important thing is that it's a breeze to use, pretty fast and doesn't make much of a mess when making coffee. It is not able to brew either a short shot or a long shot espresso, and it does not come with a steam wand. If you're looking for those features, I suggest looking into the Moccamaster KBGV Select instead.
2. Cuisinart MultiServe
This is one of the top drip coffee machines on the market. It makes consistently delicious, hot cups of coffee that brew efficiently.
We also enjoyed the ease at that we could customize the brewing experience. With a simple dial turn you can select the size of your cup (from 5 ounces single-serving up to a full-sized carafe) as well as the strength you prefer and whether you prefer French or regular press setting. You can prepare cold brew at the touch of a button, or choose from a variety of specialty options like Over Ice and Roasted.
The only drawback is that the design doesn't match some of the other more sophisticated models we tested. The rounded Smeg drip maker, for example, looks like an Easter egg and is a nice change from the boxy competitors. However, its slim water tank and narrow opening could be difficult to navigate, especially in the dark while the brew is in process. It requires a bit more concentration and effort to get going in the early morning.
3. Keurig K-Cup brewer
Keurig single-serve coffee makers make use of K-cups that are prepackaged, eliminating the necessity of measuring and grinding grounds, and also control the brewing time. These machines can also brew coffee in less than two minutes. This is much faster than a drip machine.
The Keurigs that we tested created quite a mess than drip machines. The spout that pours out hot coffee leaves a two-inch splash area, and spills out droplets all over the drip tray machine, counter and. They also make an irritating, loud popping sound while making coffee.
The Keurigs that we tested worked well despite the mess. The Smart Keurig K-Cafe is the most sophisticated model, has a detachable water reservoir, four K-cups sizes with three temperature settings, and a user-friendly program. It also has a dishwasher-safe milk frother that can froth whole, skim, and nondairy milk. This is a great option for those who want to make different coffees every morning, or for families that need more capacity.
The Keurig Instant Pod is a ideal choice for anyone who wants a straightforward, easy-to-use single-serve machine. It has a 78-ounce tank that can brew several cups before needing to be filled. And it can also brew a cup using your own ground coffee--a rare feature in the world of Keurig. The controls are simple and easy to use however, the machine communicates via tones and chirps rather than a display, making it difficult to determine when a brew has been ready.
4. Cuisinart Drip Machine
This durable, mid-priced machine comes with all the features that you require to start your day. It has a large reservoir of 14 cups and a clear window to indicate the level of water. The large, clearly labeled buttons make it easy to use. The filter and grinder that are removable are both easily cleaned in the sink. This eliminates the need to brush out the grounds from hard-to reach areas. It also has a handy brew strength selector that lets you choose between three different settings including bold.
The reservoir also comes with charcoal filters that help absorb metals and other unpleasant flavors and odors in the tap water. This could cause your coffee to taste bland or burned. This means less maintenance and a better tasting cup of coffee.
Another benefit: The programmability feature makes it easy to set your coffee to brew at a specific time. The button to pause allows you to pour a cup or two before the entire pot has finished making. This is a great feature during busy mornings, or when you require an extra boost of caffeine. It's also a beautiful looking coffee maker, with a sleek design that looks more at home on the counter than the majority of boxy drip machines.
5. Ratio Six
The Ratio Eight is the older sister of the Six. It offers an exceptional experience at a slightly lower price and a smaller footprint. Its single-button operation mimics the art of pour-over with precise metered flow of water and the ideal temperature for coffee. The machine consumes 1400 Watts of power to heat the water and complete the brewing cycle within five to six minutes. This is a lot faster than the majority of the less expensive models we test. This rapid brew time is partly due to the bloom cycle, which allows coffee grounds to settle before the shower head is able to deliver the remainder of the hot water needed for optimal extraction.
The Six utilizes a heat shield that is unique to keep water at the optimal temperature and protect the spray head. It is among few brewers to have been Golden Cup certified by Specialty Coffee Association. This means that it keeps the correct brewing temperature throughout the entire brew cycle.
The Six is sleek, minimal and minimalist in its design. It features a stainless steel carafe, which sits on the top of a Melitta flat bottom filter holder. The carafe is insulated, which keeps the brewed coffee warm without the necessity of a heated plate that helps keep the flavor intact.
6. Gevi 10-Cup Espresso Maker
The Gevi makes great tasting coffee and features a sleek, compact design that doesn't require much counter space. The touchscreen has cute little icons that let you select one-touch commands (such as Bold or, when you're making just half a cup, the One to Four cup feature). The machine allows you to set the timer, and turn the brew cycle-finished tone that sounds audible on or off.
It's great to have a built-in coffee grinder that allows you to alter the size of the grind and the strength of your coffee. It takes a while to understand how the machine operates but it's easy once you've mastered it. It comes with many of the features you would expect to see in higher-end models.
It's not able of brewing an entire carafe of coffee at once. This can be a problem if you're serving several people. It's a good option if you want drip coffeemaker that has an integrated grinder and the ability to create different drinks. It has a one year warranty and a great customer service.
7. Moccamaster KBGV
The Moccamaster KBGV is a premium drip coffee maker built to last. It comes with a five-year warranty and is made in the Netherlands by Technivorm. The sleek glass carafe is set atop a warmer that keeps the coffee at an optimal temperature for up to six minutes. It can be programmed to make a full or half pot, and it's certified to brew at the optimal times and temperatures suggested by the Specialty Coffee Association. It also features a "practically incognito drip stopper," that's a small lever located below the brew basket that stop the flow of coffee when you remove the carafe during brewing.
While this machine is more expensive than other models on the market it's well worth the cost for those who wish to enjoy consistently delicious coffee without having to spend too much time in the kitchen. filtered coffee makers that come in contact with ground or water are easily accessible. While the brew process takes longer than some other models, it's still faster than pour-over making. Additionally, the Moccamaster's unique design, which is reminiscent of tools used in workshops or scientific instruments, adds the perfect touch of elegance to your kitchen.
