f patient-centred care among nursing staff and patients.
Patient-centred care is essential for quality care. No other literature review has been conducted in the English language to summarize evidence-based patient-centred care guidelines. Patient care practices and educational, organizational, and policy factors promote patient-centred care to improve quality of care and raise levels of awareness of patient-centred care among nursing staff and patients.
To better understand the significance of pain as a predictor of disease severity in parotid gland malignancy.
A retrospective chart review of patients treated for primary parotid gland malignancy at our institution between 1991 and 2020 was performed.
Patient records were retrospectively reviewed and relevant clinical parameters were collected. Patients were stratified into low stage (I and II) disease and high stage (III and IV) disease groups to analyze the independent effect of pain at initial presentation on disease recurrence rate and disease-free survival using Kaplan-Meier survival curves and an independent two-sample t-test.
Of 154 patients evaluated, there were 69 patients in the low stage group and 80 patients in the high stage group. Thirty-seven high stage patients presented with pain. High stage patients with pain were significantly more likely to develop disease recurrence than high stage patients without pain (58.5% [22/37] versus 33.3% [13/39], P = .022). High stage patients with pain also had significantly decreased disease-free survival time compared to high stage patients without pain (P = .027).
Pain on presentation appears to be a poor prognostic factor for patients with parotid gland malignancy. For patients with demonstrated high stage disease, pain is independently associated with increased risk of recurrence and decreased disease-free survival time.
4 Laryngoscope, 2020.
4 Laryngoscope, 2020.Amzal and colleagues (1) reported about the prospect of pharmacological premature termination codon (PMT) readthrough of ABCB11 mRNA in bile salt export pump deficiency, the latter causing progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC)-type 2. The authors demonstrate that aminoglycoside antibiotics can stimulate readthrough of nonsense mutation-induced PMT in the ABCB11 mRNA, thereby rescuing full-length ABCB11 protein synthesis. The study provides proof-of-principle for a potential new therapy for nonsense mutation-associated PFIC2. The authors acknowledge that their cell line-based model does not take nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) into account, which however determines whether PFIC2 patients may actually benefit from PMT readthrough therapy. Importantly, other cell models exist that do take NMD into account and we believe these should be discussed as part of the path to bring their exciting findings closer to the clinic.
Many youth engage in risky sexual behaviors that are associated with adverse sexual health outcomes. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning/queer (LGBTQ) youth are disproportionately affected. Comprehensive sex education is instrumental to minimize these outcomes; however, each state varies in the topics taught.
This paper is a comprehensive review of all 50 states and the District of Columbia's policies, including laws and education standards, for LGBTQ inclusive material in school-based sex education for youth in K-12.
Overall, 48 states have policies that mandate sex education in the public schools. This review describes policy differences relevant to students who identify as LGBTQ, by comparing required topics, parental/guardian permission, LGBTQ inclusion, and normative language requirements.
There is a lack of uniformity and presence of discrimination in school-based sex education policies in the United States, particularly related to LGBTQ topics. Therefore, young people, especially LGBTQ students, face geographical barriers to accessing sexual health information and schools are limited in implementing curriculum essential for students to optimize sexual health outcomes. State policymakers, school administrators, child health advocates, and parents should work to eliminate barriers for comprehensive sex education.

Treating angiotensin II/hypoxia-stimulated H9c2 cells with marein led to decreasing cell surface area, intracellular total protein, atrial natriuretic peptide, and free fatty acids levels, but increasing glucose level. Marein treatment decreased hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), peroxisome proliferator activated receptor γ (PPARγ), medium chain acyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase, glucose transporter-4, and glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase protein expressions, and increased PPARα, fatty acid transport protein-1, carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1, and pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase-4 protein expressions. Similar results were observed in HIF-1α-overexpressing H9c2 cells, whereas these effects were abolished in siRNA-HIF-1α-transfected H9c2 cells. It was concluded that marein could ameliorate abnormal glucolipid metabolism in hypertrophic H9c2 cells, and the effects could be attributable to reduction of HIF-1α expression and subsequent regulation PPARα/γ-mediated lipogenic gene expressions.
The effect of type of atrial fibrillation (AF) on adverse outcomes in Chinese patients without oral anticoagulants (OAC) was controversial.
The type of AF associated with adverse outcomes in Chinese patients without OAC.
A total of 1358 AF patients without OAC from a multicenter, prospective, observational study was included for analysis. Univariable and multivariable Cox regression models were utilized. Net reclassification improvement analysis was performed for the assessment of risk prediction models.
There were 896(66%) patients enrolled with non-paroxysmal AF (NPAF) and 462(34%) with paroxysmal AF (PAF). The median age was 70.9 ± 12.6 years, and 682 patients (50.2%) were female. During 1 year of follow-up, 215(16.4%) patients died, and 107 (8.1%) patients experienced thromboembolic events. selleck chemicals Compared with the PAF group, NPAF group had a notably higher incidence of all-cause mortality (20.2% vs. 9.4%, p < .001), thromboembolism (10.5% vs. 3.8%, p < .001). After multivariable adjustment, NPAF was a strong predictor of thromboembolism (HR 2.
