Evolution Korea
In the past, the Korean scientific community avoided engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credence. Silence is no longer an option.
The STR has been battling to get rid of textbooks that discuss evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. This is only one example of the way in which the development paradigm has changed.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the changes in genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living creatures adapt to their environment, which may result in variations in genes or even whole genomes. These changes could over generations result in the development of new species. The predominant theory of evolution is known as natural selection, which describes the process that allows people with advantages survive and reproduce more often than those with disadvantages. This differential reproduction can be a catalyst to the emergence and evolution of new species.
The term "evolution" is derived from Latin for unrolling or revealing has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has evolved, both in science and in other fields. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species changed into other species in a predetermined fashion. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist disciple who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.
More recently evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living creatures develop characteristics that increase their chances of survival or ability to produce offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can cause a population to acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. The shift in gene frequency is called natural selection, and it is the main driver of evolutionary change. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolutionary because they don't pass on to the next generation.
Despite the fact that evolution has stood the tests of time and thousands of scientific experiments however, creationists have taken advantage of the notion that the theory is controversial to argue that it shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in high school textbooks. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary origins for humans and Archaeopteryx - a feathered dinosaur believed to be the ancestral bird's first ancestor.
Why is Evolution Important?
Evolution is the explanation for the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also a foundation of biology, and aids scientists to learn how living organisms function and develop. Evolution also reveals the relationships between different species. Scientists study evolution to gain a better understanding of the natural world and to discover useful information including the development of new drugs.
The evidence for evolution of biological species is overwhelming. No other scientific theory can explain as much about the universe and the life on this planet. It has been rigorously studied and verified for many years. Many people, including religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory of evolution. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology does not contradict religions, since the theory deals only with things, events and processes within the physical world.
Many religious people have come up with a way of reconciling evolution with their convictions. For example certain Christians believe that God created the world through evolution and that humans have an ancestry with other animals.
It is essential that scientists and educators speak out for teaching evolution. In some countries, anti-evolution sentiment is growing. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made progress in a few states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, is campaigning for the removal of textbooks about the evolution of horses as well as the bird ancestral Archaeopteryx.
While these are disturbing changes, it's important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from a variety of sources, including fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. 무료 에볼루션 behind this support are diverse. Some scientists study evolution in order to make practical discoveries, such as the development of new medicines and other treatments, while others use it to improve animal and plants species, usually for the benefit of humans. Some scientists are simply curious, whereas others have an intense belief in God.
What is Creationism?
Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. Although Creationists may not all be Christian, many are. Creationists are typically divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.
The most common type of creationist is the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of six days of creation was true and that the universe and the life on Earth were created only recently.
OECs are less well known, but they are just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is a lie.
Both kinds of creationism deny the scientific theories that biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life came to be on Earth. They argue that evolution is inconceivable because it requires miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought shunned miracles in fear that they could lose their credibility.
Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution and also special creation. They call their view “theistic evolution.” It is sometimes referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from created kinds." The theory says that God creates the original species and then allows these to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species that are similar to the original.
Other creationists believe that God created the universe and all living things in a single event, referred to as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the first species were created simultaneously, and that they grew gradually afterward. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis and claim that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is not possible.
In general, the creationists oppose teaching evolution at schools. Numerous professional associations, like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education are in support of this view as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, certain academic institutions and scientists are more flexible and permit the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.
What exactly is Creationism in Korea?
When people think of creationism typically think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. Publishers of high-school textbooks announced recently that they would remove references to evolution from their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this effort. The STR has scored its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, the Archeopteryx. The focus is now on the removal of excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution too.
STR claims that it has the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. Its goal, it says, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays an unflattering image for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of trainee biology teachers found that about half do not believe in evolution. The reasons aren't certain, but could be related to religion or the absence of creation scientists in the country.
The KACR has accomplished a lot through its seminars and lectures. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences that has a creationist viewpoint, which attracted the attention of college communities. In 1991, a professor along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present.
On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six foreign lecturers including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin addressed a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering talks on creation science at major seminaries too. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
