The Best Drip Coffee Machines
Drip coffee makers are reliable machines capable of making coffee hands-free. However, they can be large and bulky, taking up valuable counter space or a spot under the cabinet.
The top drip machines are simple and easy to use. Some drip machines include additional features like programmable clocks or self-cleaning mode to make your morning coffee more personalized.
1. De'Longhi TrueBrew
The De'Longhi TrueBrew is a one-stop shop for coffee. It can be made from whole beans to a complete carafe with a few presses. It has a built-in burr grinder (taken directly from De'Longhi's espresso machines) that measures out the proper amount of coffee grounds and compacts them prior to making the coffee - eliminating plastic filters and pods.
It also comes with a variety of settings to suit the size of your cup or style, from 3oz espresso drinks, up to 16oz of iced tea and 40oz for the standard carafe. It pours the coffee into a variety of vessel, from large mugs to those tiny espresso cups, or even tall travel mugs that do not typically fit under drip machines. It even creates tea!
Bean Extract Technology is a technical term that manufacturers love to use. It "adapts and grinds" beans based on the beans you choose. That's it for marketing. What matters is that it's easy to use, is pretty quick and doesn't create a lot of a mess when brewing. It does, however, not have the ability to make a short or long shot of espresso and doesn't have a steam wand for milk. If you're looking for these features, I suggest looking into the Moccamaster KBGV Select instead.
2. Cuisinart MultiServe
This is among the best drip coffee machines available on the market. It makes consistently delicious hot cups of coffee that are brewed efficiently.
We also enjoyed the ease of customizing the method of brewing. You can choose your cup size (from 5-ounce single servings up to a full carafe) and the strength you want by simply turning a dial and also choose between either a french press or regular setting. You can make cold brew at the push of a button or select from a range of specialty options such as Over Ice and Roasted.
The only issue is that the design isn't as elegant as some of the more sophisticated models we've tested. For instance, the rounded Smeg drip machine resembles a sparkling Easter egg and is a welcome break from the traditional boxy designs of competitors. Its narrow opening and slim tank can be tricky to navigate, especially in the dark when the brew is running. It takes some time and thought to get going in the early morning.
3. Keurig K-Cup brewer
Keurig single-serve coffee makers use K-cups that are prepackaged, eliminating the necessity to measure and grind grounds and regulate brewing times. These machines also brew one cup of coffee in less than two minutes, which is a lot quicker than a standard drip machine.
But the Keurigs we've tested create quite a mess, much more than drip machines. The spout that spews the hot coffee leaves a two-inch splash area, which spills out droplets all over the drip tray as well as the counter, machine and. They also create a bothersome loud sputtering noise while making coffee.
The Keurigs that we tested worked very well, despite the mess. The Smart Keurig K-Cafe is the most advanced model, featuring a removable reservoir, four sizes of K-cups with three temperature settings and a user-friendly menu. It also has a milk frother which can be used to froth skim, whole or non-dairy milk. It's a great option for anyone who wants to make a different cup of coffee every morning or for large families who need an extra capacity.
Keurig Instant pod is another great choice for anyone looking for a single-serve machine that is user-friendly and simple. It boasts a massive 78-ounce water tank that can brew many cups before needing to be filled. Additionally, it can make a cup with your own ground coffee, a rare feature for the world of Keurig. The controls are simple and straightforward however, the machine communicates with tones and chirps rather than a display, making it difficult to determine when a cup is ready.
4. Cuisinart Drip Machine
This reliable, mid-priced machine has all the features that you need to start your day. It comes with a large, 14-cup reservoir and a clear water level indicator window. It is easy to use because of the large buttons that have clearly labeled labels. The removable filter and grinder can both be cleaned in the sink. This eliminates the need to brush out the grounds from hard-to reach areas. It also includes a handy brew-strength selector that lets you choose between three different settings including bold.
The reservoir also has charcoal filters that help soak up metals and other unpleasant odors and flavors in the tap water. This can cause coffee to taste bland or burned. This means less maintenance, and a better tasting cup of coffee.
Another benefit: The programming feature makes it easy to set your coffee to brew at an exact time. And the pause button allows you to pour one or two cups of coffee before the full pot is finished making it, which can be useful for hectic mornings when you need a boost of caffeine. It also has a sleek design, which is more comfortable on the counter of your kitchen compared to most boxy drip coffee makers.
5. Ratio Six
The Ratio Eight is the older brother of the Six. It provides a premium experience with a slightly lower price and a smaller footprint. The single-button system emulates the pour-over process, and comes with a precision measured flow of water and the ideal temperature for coffee. The machine uses 1400 Watts of power to heat the water and complete the brewing process within five to six minutes. This is a lot quicker than the lower-end models we test. This rapid brew time is partly due to the bloom cycle, which allows grounds to settle prior to when the shower head is able to deliver the remainder of the hot water to ensure optimal extraction.
The Six features a shield of heat that is unique to keep water at the optimal temperature and protect the spray head. This is one of the few brewers that have been Golden Cup certified by the Specialty Coffee Association, which means it keeps the correct brewing temperature consistently throughout the brewing process.
In terms of design in terms of style, the Six is sleek and minimalist, with a stainless steel carafe that is placed on top of a filter holder that can accommodate Melitta flat bottom filters. The carafe is insulated, which keeps the brewed coffee warm without the need for a heated plate, which helps to preserve flavor.
6. Gevi 10-Cup Espresso Maker
The Gevi produces great tasting coffee and has a sleek, relatively compact design that doesn't take up lots of counter space. The touchscreen features cute icons that let you choose one-touch commands. For example you can select Bold or if you're making a half pot of coffee, you can choose the One to four cups feature. The machine allows you to set the timer and switch the audible brew-cycle-finished tone on or off.
The built-in grinder as well as the ability to dial in the grind size and strength of your coffee is a nice addition. It takes some time to learn how the machine works however, it's easy when you've done. It comes with many of the features you would expect to find on higher-end models.
It's not able to brew a whole carafe of coffee in one go. This could be a problem if you're serving a lot of people. However, it's a great choice if you're looking for a drip coffee maker with a built-in grinder and the ability to make a variety of types of drinks. It also comes with a 1-year warranty and excellent customer support.
7. Read Alot more is a top drip-coffee maker built to last. It is made by Technivorm in the Netherlands and comes with a five-year warranty. Its sleek glass carafe sits atop a warmer that keeps the coffee at an optimal temperature for up to six minutes. It can be programmed to brew a full or half pot, and is certified to brew at the ideal temperatures and times recommended by the Specialty Coffee Association. It also comes with a "practically invisible drip stop," a small lever located beneath the brew pot that stops the flow of coffee if you take away the carafe when making coffee.
While this machine is more expensive than others on the market, it's worth the investment for anyone who wants to enjoy consistently great coffee without spending too much time in the kitchen. It's easy to clean and all parts that come in contact with water or grounds are easily accessible. Although the brewing process takes longer than other models, it's quicker than pour-over brewing. Additionally, the Moccamaster's unique design that is reminiscent of workshop tools or scientific devices, adds the perfect touch of elegance to your kitchen.
