pH gradient-driven modular micro-swimmers are investigated as a model for a large variety of quasi-two-dimensional chemi-phoretic self-propelled entities. Using three-channel micro-photometry, we obtain a precise large field mapping of pH at a spatial resolution of a few microns and a pH resolution of [Formula see text] units for swimmers of different velocities propelling on two differently charged substrates. We model our results in terms of solutions of the three-dimensional advection-diffusion equation for a 11 electrolyte, i.e. carbonic acid, which is produced by ion exchange and consumed by equilibration with dissolved [Formula see text]. We demonstrate the dependence of gradient shape and steepness on swimmer speed, diffusivity of chemicals, as well as the fuel budget. Moreover, we experimentally observe a subtle, but significant feedback of the swimmer's immediate environment in terms of a substrate charge-mediated solvent convection. We discuss our findings in view of different recent results from other micro-fluidic or active matter investigations. We anticipate that they are relevant for quantitative modelling and targeted applications of diffusio-phoretic flows in general and artificial micro-swimmers in particular.Nimesulide is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug still marketed in many countries. We aim to analyze the clinical phenotype, outcome, and histological features of nimesulide-induced liver injury (nimesulide-DILI). We analyzed 57 cases recruited from the Spanish and Latin American DILI registries. Causality was assessed by the RUCAM scale. Mean age of the whole case series was 59 years (86% women) with a median time to onset of 40 days. A total of 46 patients (81%) were jaundiced. Nimesulide-DILI pattern was hepatocellular in 38 (67%), mixed in 12 (21%), and cholestatic in 7 (12%) cases. Transaminases were elevated with a mean of nearly 20-fold the upper limit of normality (ULN), while alkaline phosphatase showed a twofold mean elevation above ULN. Total bilirubin showed a mean elevation of 13-fold the ULN. Liver histology was obtained in 14 cases (25%), most of them with a hepatocellular pattern. Median time to recovery was 60 days. Overall, 12 patients (21%) developed acute liver failure (ALF), five (8.8%) died, three underwent liver transplantation (5.3%), and the remaining four resolved. Latency was ≤ 15 days in 12 patients (21%) and one patient developed ALF within 7 days from treatment initiation. Increased total bilirubin and aspartate transaminase levels were independently associated with the development of ALF. In summary, nimesulide-DILI affects mainly women and presents typically with a hepatocellular pattern. It is associated with ALF and death in a high proportion of patients. Shorter (≤ 15 days) duration of therapy does not prevent serious nimesulide hepatotoxicity, making its risk/benefit ratio clearly unfavorable.Cancer patients represent a vulnerable cohort during the Sars-CoV-2 pandemic. Oncological societies have generated a plethora of recommendations, but precise instructions about routine oncological procedures remain scarce. Here, we report on local COVID-19 protection measures established in an interdisciplinary approach at a tertiary care center during the first wave of the pandemia in Germany. read more Following these measures, no additional morbidity or mortality during oncological procedures was observed, and no nosocomial infections were registered. However, Validation of our measures is outstanding and regional SARS-CoV-2 prevalence was low. However, specific oncological measures might be important to ensure optimal oncological results, especially for advanced cancer stages during this and future pandemia. In the future, communication about these measures might be crucial to a cancer patient´s assigned network to reduce the danger of excess mortality within the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, the genotoxic effect of contaminants was assessed through detection of DNA damage using the micronucleus (MNs) test in erythrocytes from 149 flounder fish collected in two regions of the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). The frequency of microcytes (MCs) was also evaluated in the same group of fish collected from the Perdido Foldbelt (PF) and the Yucatan Platform (YP). The MCs frequency was different among locations of the YP (p = 0.011), while MNs frequency varied among locations of PF (p = 0.024). MCs and MNs values correlated with heavy metals from fish muscle, fish species and localities. Mean number, prevalence, and intensity of MCs and MNs correlated with Al, PAHs, depth, and locality. MNs frequency showed a species-specific association (p = 0.004). MNs and MCs were associated with heavy metals and PAHs from fish muscle and sediments, and the MNs frequency was species dependent.Zinc pollution impairs neural processes and protein function and also effects calcium-related transcriptional regulation and enzyme activity. In this study, we investigated pathways that potentially respond to calcium signaling under Zn2+ stress. Specifically we measured relative expressions of GeCNAα, GeCNB, GeMT, GeTNF-α, GeIL-1β, and GeHsp90 in gills, livers, and kidneys of the indicator species Gymnocypris eckloni and found wide variation in their expression between tissues during the course of Zn2+ exposure. Notably, GeCNAα, GeCNB, GeTNF-α, GeIL-1β, and GeMT were rapidly and strongly up-regulated in gills; GeIL-1β and GeHsp90 transcription was quickly induced in kidneys; and GeCNB, GeTNF-α, GeIL-1β, and GeHsp90 were most rapidly up-regulated in livers. GeCNAα and GeMT showed a contrasting late transcriptional up-regulation. These results suggest independent branches for chelation and immune responses during self-protection against Zn2+ toxicity, and the immune response appears to be faster than metal chelation.RNA is central to the COVID-19 pandemic-it shapes how the SARS Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) behaves, and how researchers investigate and fight it. However, RNA has received relatively little attention in the history and philosophy of the life sciences. By analysing RNA biology in more detail, philosophers and historians of science could gain new and powerful tools to assess the current pandemic, and the biological sciences more generally.
