Factors associated with infrequent plain water intake were younger age (≤15 years; aOR = 1.20, CI = 1.05-1.37); earning mostly D/F grades (aOR = 1.37, CI = 1.07-1.77); consuming regular soda 1 to 6 times/week (aOR = 1.92, CI = 1.67-2.20) or ≥1 time/day (aOR = 3.23, CI = 2.65-3.94), sports drinks 1 to 6 times/week (aOR = 1.30, CI = 1.14-1.49), milk less then 2 glasses/day (aOR = 1.51, CI = 1.31-1.73), fruits less then 2 times/day (aOR = 1.92, CI = 1.66-2.22), and vegetables less then 3 times/day (aOR = 2.42, CI = 2.04-2.89); and being physically active ≥60 minutes/day on less then 5 days/week (aOR = 1.83, CI = 1.60-2.08). Students with obesity were less likely to have infrequent water intake (aOR = 0.63, CI = 0.53-0.74). CONCLUSIONS Infrequent plain water intake was associated with younger age, poor academic grades, poor dietary behaviors, and physical inactivity. These findings can inform intervention efforts to increase water intake to promote healthy lifestyles among adolescents.Purpose Proximal Junctional Kyphosis (PJK) is a well-documented phenomenon following spinal instrumented fusion. Myelopathy associated with proximal junctional failure (PJF) is poorly described in the literature. Adjacent segment disease, fracture above the upper instrumented vertebrae and subluxation may all cause cord compression, ambulatory dysfunction, and/or lower extremity weakness in the postoperative period.Materials and methods We review the literature on PJK and PJF, and discusses the postoperative management of three patients who experienced myelopathy associated with PJF following T9/10 to pelvis fusion at a single institution.Results and conclusions PJF with myelopathy must be diagnosed and surgically corrected early on so as to minimize permanent neurologic injury. Patients requiring significant sagittal deformity correction are at greater risk for PJF, and may benefit from constructs terminating in the upper thoracic spine.This content analysis explored associations between the framing of cancer-related health news stories on Facebook and their corresponding comments. It was found that regardless of story framing the majority of responses involved users engaging in debate and discussion rather than sharing personal experiences. Furthermore, stories framed episodically had a greater proportion of both supportive and unsupportive comments than stories framed thematically. As predicted, episodic stories were associated with more attributions of responsibility directed towards the individual whereas thematic stories lead to more societal-level attributions of blame. Contrary to predictions, responses did not contribute towards the stigmatisation of lung cancer, instead more responses were aimed at reducing stigma for this illness. Within the findings strong beliefs about cancer treatment and management were also identified, which raises concern over the spread of misinformation. Overall, this research provided insight into the framing of cancer news and highlighted potential implications of Facebook comments.Cisplatin is a well-known chemotherapy medication used to treat numerous cancers. However, treatment with cisplatin in cancer therapy has major side effects, such as nephrotoxic acute kidney injury. Adult vertebrate kidneys are commonly used as models of cisplatin-induced nephrotoxic acute kidney injury. Embryonic zebrafish kidney is more simplified and is composed simply of two nephrons and thus is an excellent model for the investigation of cisplatin nephrotoxicity. Here, we developed a novel model to induce cisplatin nephrotoxicity in adult zebrafish and demonstrated that intraperitoneal injection of cisplatin caused a decline in kidney proximal tubular function based on fluorescein-labeled dextran uptake and alkaline phosphatase staining. We also showed that cisplatin induced histological injury of the kidney tubules quantified by tubular injury scores on the periodic acid-Schiff-stained kidney sections. As shown in a mouse model of cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity, the activation of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), an enzyme implicated in cisplatin-induced cell death, was markedly increased after cisplatin injection in adult zebrafish. Furthermore, pharmacological inhibition of PARP using specific PARP inhibitor PJ34 or 3-aminobenzamide ameliorated kidney proximal tubular functional and histological damages in cisplatin-injected adult zebrafish kidneys. Administration of a combination of PARP inhibitors PJ34 and 3-aminobenzamide additively protected renal function and histology in zebrafish and mouse models of cisplatin nephrotoxicity. In conclusion, these data suggest that adult zebrafish is not only suitable for drug screening and genetic manipulation, but also useful as a simplified but powerful model to study the pathophysiology of cisplatin nephrotoxicity and establish new therapies for treating human kidney diseases.In the present study, thrombocytes, erythrocytes, and leukocytes were individually brought into contact with different immobilized blood proteins on the surface of polystyrene (PS), which was modified with a poly(styrene)-b-poly(acrylic acid) copolymer. When the concentration of fibronectin was greater than 5 μg mL-1, the attachment of erythrocytes increased, which indicated that the modified PS surface was less compatible with erythrocytes. In addition, vitronectin and laminin attached on the surface increased the adhesion of thrombocytes; higher adhesion was observed for leukocytes in the cases of fibrinogen, lysozyme, and laminin. Interestingly, adhesion properties of blood cells on the protein surface could be influenced by the addition of metal oxide- and carbon-based photocatalysts. After a photocatalytic treatment by metal oxide-based TiO2, the adhesion amounts of erythrocytes improved slightly, whereas the adhesion of leukocytes and thrombocytes decreased after treatment with a carbon-based g-C3N4 nanosheet.
