Snakebite envenoming is a long-hidden public health threat in the rural communities of Kenya. This study aimed to shed light on the health-seeking behaviour of people bitten by snakes, views on prevention measures and community needs and the consequences for snakebite patients in these areas.
Six focus group interviews were conducted in communities in the Kajiado (n=3) and Kilifi (n=3) counties.
Traditional first-aid practices such as the use of a tourniquet and/or cutting the wound, use of a black stone and a variety of other traditional remedies were common. Challenges with transportation to health facilities and inadequately resourced facilities complicated accessing medical care. Community members voiced a need to improve access to trained healthcare workers and snakebite treatments at health facilities.
While communities had high trust in evidence-based medical care, traditional treatment was often sought, causing delays in timely medical attention. Traditional practices were often used in the home environment and these were not usually administered by a traditional healer. The findings illustrate the need to combine improving the availability of effective snakebite treatment and healthcare worker training on snakebite with community education to reduce the impact of snakebite.

Deficits in motor inhibitory control and working memory have been hypothesized to be both a cause and consequence of heavy alcohol use. Adolescence is a critical developmental stage for inhibitory control and working memory, and it is also a stage when individuals are most likely to initiate alcohol use. This study aimed to examine whether inhibitory control and working memory would predict alcohol use and involvement in a group of UK adolescents.
We recruited 220 (N=178, female) adolescents, aged between 16 and 18, from eight higher education settings in the Merseyside region of the UK. Alcohol use was examined using the Timeline Follow-Back and involvement (and related problems) using the Adolescent Alcohol Involvement Scale. A reward-based inhibitory control task (Go/No-Go) was used to examine the inhibition and reward sensitivity, and a self-ordered pointing task was used to measure working memory.
Multiple regression demonstrated that neither inhibitory control (b=0.02 (95% confidence interval (CI)ry and alcohol use.
Because of new and improved imaging techniques, cystic/intraductal pancreatobiliary tract lesions are increasingly being discovered, and brushings or endoscopic ultrasound/computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsies from these lesions have become an integral part of pathologists' daily practice. Because patient management has become increasingly conservative, accurate preoperative diagnosis is critical. Cytologic distinction of low-risk (pseudocysts, serous cystadenoma, lymphoepithelial cysts, and squamoid cysts of the pancreatic duct) from high-risk pancreatic cysts (intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm and mucinous cystic neoplasm) requires incorporation of clinical, radiologic, and cytologic findings, in conjunction with chemical and molecular analysis of cyst fluid. However, its role and mechanism remain vague in pneumonia. The interplay among genes was confirmed by dual-luciferase reporter assay, RNA immunoprecipitation, and RNA pull-down assay. SNHG16 and sushi domain containing 2 (SUSD2) were upregulated, and miRNA (miR)-141-3p was downregulated in the serum of acute pneumonia patients and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged human lung fibroblasts WI-38. LPS induced apoptosis, autophagy, and inflammatory response in WI-38 cells, which was significantly attenuated by SNHG16 knockdown and/or miR-141-3p overexpression. Notably, both SNHG16 and SUSD2 were identified as target genes of miR-141-3p. Besides, the suppressive role of SNHG16 knockdown in LPS-induced in WI-38 cells was partially abolished by miR-141-3p silencing, and the similar inhibition of miR-141-3p overexpression was further blocked by SUSD2 restoration. Combinations of these stresses that continue over long terms often inhibit cells' growth and lead to their death, markedly limiting the useful functions of microorganisms (eg their fermentation ability). Thus, high stress tolerance of cells is required to improve productivity and add value to fermented/brewed foods and biofuels. This review focuses on stress tolerance mechanisms, including l-proline/l-arginine metabolism, ubiquitin system, and transcription factors, and the functional development of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which has been used not only in basic science as a model of higher eukaryotes but also in fermentation processes for making alcoholic beverages, food products, and bioethanol.
