Drip Coffee Machine 101 It's The Complete Guide For Beginners
The Best Drip Coffee Machines

Drip coffee makers are powerful machines that allow hands-free brewing. However, they can be heavy and bulky taking up valuable counter space or an area under the cabinet.

The top drip machines are sleek and easy to use. Coffeee have extra features that make a morning cup of coffee more customizable with timers that can be programmed and self-cleaning modes.

1. De'Longhi TrueBrew

The De'Longhi TrueBrew is a one-stop shop for coffee. It can be made from whole beans to a full carafe by pressing a few buttons. It comes with a built-in burr grinder (taken directly from the espresso machines of De'Longhi) that measures the correct amount of coffee grounds, then compacts them prior to brewing – eliminating wasteful plastic filters and pods.

It also comes with a variety of settings that can be adapted to the size of your cup or design, from 3oz espresso drinks up to 16oz of iced coffee and 40oz for the standard carafe. It dispenses the coffee into your choice of vessel, from large cups to tiny espresso cups or tall travel mugs that wouldn't typically fit under drip machines. It can even make tea!

Manufacturers love to dream up absurd technical jargons and this one comes with the Bean Extract Technology which "adapts and precisely grinds" the beans according to the beans you choose. However, it's really nothing more than marketing. It's essential that it's easy to use, fast and doesn't cause a lot of mess when making espresso. However, it does not have the capability to brew a short or long shot of espresso and lacks steam wands for milk. If you're looking to get those features, I recommend taking a look at the Moccamaster KBG Select instead.

2. Cuisinart MultiServe

This is among the best drip coffee machines available on the market. It consistently produces delicious hot cups of joe that brew efficiently and cleanly from sleek, compact equipment that is easy to use, and all for a affordable cost.

We also appreciated the ease at which we were able to customize the brewing experience. You can select your cup size (from 5-ounce single servings to a full carafe) and the strength you want by turning dials, as well as choose between either a french press or regular setting. You can also make cold brew at the press of the button, or select from a variety of specialty options like Over Ice and Roasted.

The only issue is that it doesn't match the more sophisticated models that we tried. For instance the Smeg drip's rounded machine looks like a gleaming Easter egg and is a welcome break from the traditional boxy designs of competitors. Its narrow opening and slender tank can be tricky to navigate, especially in the dark when the brew is on. It takes some thought and effort to get going in the early morning.

3. Keurig K-Cup brewer

Keurig single-serve coffee makers utilize K-cups that are prepackaged, eliminating the necessity of measuring and grinding grounds and control brewing times. They can also brew coffee in under two minutes. This is much faster than a drip maker.

The Keurigs that we tested created quite a mess than drip machines. The spout which dispenses hot coffee creates a 2 inch splash area that leaves droplets all over the drip tray, machine and counter. And they produce an annoying, loud sound when you're brewing.

The Keurigs that we tested performed well, despite the mess. The Smart Keurig K-Cafe, the most advanced model, has a detachable water reservoir, four K-cups sizes with three temperature settings, and a user-friendly program. It also comes with an automatic milk frother that is dishwasher safe and can froth whole, skim, and non-dairy milk. This is a great choice for those who wish to brew different coffee every morning, or for families that require more capacity.

The Keurig Instant Pod is also a good choice for anyone who wants a simple and easy-to-use single-serve device. It has a 78-ounce tank that can brew multiple cups before having to be filled. Additionally, it can create a cup of coffee using the coffee you grind yourself, which is a unique feature of the form of a Keurig. The controls are simple and easy to use however, the machine communicates via tones and chirps instead of a display, which makes it difficult to know when a brew has been ready.

4. Cuisinart Drip Machine

This reliable, mid-priced machine comes with all the features you need to start your day. It has a large reservoir that holds 14 cups, and an easy-to-read window to show the water level. The large, clearly labeled buttons make it intuitive to use. The filter and grinder that are removable are both easily cleaned in the sink. This removes the need to scrub out the grounds from hard-to reach areas. It also has a handy brew strength selector, which lets you select from three different settings, including bold.

The reservoir is equipped with a charcoal filter which helps to remove metals and unpleasant flavors as well as odors from the tap water. This could make your coffee to taste dull or burnt. That means less maintenance and a better tasting coffee.

A second benefit: the programmability feature lets you to set your coffee brewing to a certain time. The button to pause allows you to pour a cup of coffee or two before the entire pot has finished making. This can be helpful in busy mornings when you require an extra boost of caffeine. It also has a sleek and modern design and will look more at home on the counter of your kitchen compared to other drip coffee machines.

5. Ratio Six

The Ratio Eight is the older brother of the Six. It provides an exceptional experience at a slightly lower price and smaller footprint. The single-button control simulates the pour-over process, and comes with a precise measured flow of water and the ideal temperature for coffee. The machine consumes 1400 watts of power to heat the water and complete the brewing cycle within 5 to 6 minutes. This is much quicker than the lower-end models we tested. This speedy brewing is largely due to the bloom cycle, which allows grounds of coffee to settle before the shower head delivers the rest of the hot water to ensure optimal extraction.

The Six utilizes a heat shield that is unique to keep the water at a perfect temperature and protect the spray head. This is one of only few brewers to have been Golden Cup certified by Specialty Coffee Association. This means it maintains the right temperature throughout the brew cycle.

In terms of design in terms of style, the Six is sleek and minimalist and comes with a stainless steel carafe that is placed on the top of a filter holder that can accommodate Melitta flat bottom filters. The carafe is insulated, which helps keep the coffee hot, without the need for heated plates. This helps preserve flavor.

6. Gevi 10-Cup Espresso Maker

The Gevi produces great tasting coffee and has an elegant, compact design that doesn't take up lots of counter space. The touchscreen has cute icons that allow you to select one-touch commands (such as Bold, or in the case of making just half a cup, the One to Four cups feature). The machine also lets you set the timer and turn the brew cycle-finished tone that sounds audible on or off.

The built-in grinder and the ability to dial in the grind size and strength of your coffee is a nice addition. It takes a while to learn how the machine functions but it's easy when you've done. It has plenty of the features you'd expect to see on higher-end models.

The only drawback is that it can't brew a full carafe at once this could be a challenge if you're serving multiple people. However, it's a great choice if you're looking for a drip coffee maker with an integrated grinder and the flexibility to make different kinds of drinks. It comes with a one-year warranty and excellent customer support.

7. Moccamaster KBGV

The Moccamaster KBGV is a premium drip coffee maker built to last. It comes with a 5 year warranty and is manufactured in the Netherlands by Technivorm. Its sleek glass carafe sits on top of a warmer, which keeps the coffee at a perfect temperature for up to six minutes. It can be programmed to brew a full or half pot, and it's certified to brew at ideal temperatures and times recommended by the Specialty Coffee Association. It also has a "practically invisible drip stop," which is a small lever below the brew pot that stops the flow of coffee if you take away the carafe from the making.

While this machine is more expensive than other machines on the market, it's worth the cost for those who wish to enjoy consistently great coffee without spending too much time in the kitchen. It's easy to clean, and all parts that come in contact with the ground and water are easily accessible. While the brew process takes longer than some other models, it's still faster than pour-over making. Besides, the Moccamaster's unique design that is reminiscent of workshop tools or scientific instruments will add an elegant touch to your kitchen.
